GR-tree and query aggregation techniques have been proposed for spatial query processing in conventional spatial query processing for wireless sensor networks. Although these spatial query processing techniques consider spatial query optimization, time query optimization is not taken into consideration. The index reorganization cost and communication cost for the parent sensor nodes increase the energy consumption that is required to ensure the most efficient operation in the wireless sensor node. This paper proposes itinerary-based R-tree (IR-tree) for more efficient spatial-temporal query processing in wireless sensor networks. This paper analyzes the performance of previous studies and IR-tree, which are the conventional spatial query processing techniques, with regard to the accuracy, energy consumption, and query processing time of the query results using the wireless sensor data with Uniform, Gauss, and Skew distributions. This paper proves the superiority of the proposed IR-tree-based space-time indexing.
Objective: The present study systematically analyzed the characteristics of ergonomic layout optimization methods by a comprehensive literature survey. Background: Although layout design methods for ergonomic placement of controls and displays on a console have been developed, understanding of their characteristics is lacking. Method: The present study analyzed layout optimization papers published past 20 years from the following four aspects: optimization model, optimization algorithm, design principle, and constraint/assumption. Results: The existing layout optimization methods based on various optimization techniques consider only a partial set of four layout principles(importance, frequency of use, sequence of use, and functional grouping) and two ergonomic criteria(visibility and reach). In addition, the existing methods oversimplify components in various sizes, shapes, and angles by assuming the equality of the components in size and shape. Conclusion: A more effective layout optimization method is needed which considers the layout principles and ergonomic criteria in a comprehensive manner and reflect the diversity of components in size and shape. Application: The identified characteristics on the existing layout optimization methods can be applicable to development of a better ergonomic console layout design method.

A scheme of dynamic optimization for batch reactor his been developed and applied to a semi-batch esterification reactor. To obtain optimal operating conditions for the given semi-batch reactor system with complex reaction kinetic and process constraints, a general nonlinear programming solver and finite element techniques have been introduced. The optimization results for the complex reactor system have been compared with those of Kumar et al. [1984] to show better optimization performance. The proposed optimizing scheme has been applied to the free end time problem to obtain the realistic operating condition. The results can supply valuable information for economic operation of the given batch esterification reactor.
The geometric configuration in the weight-reduced structure is very required to be started from the conceptual design with low cost, high performance and quality. In this point, a structural-topological shape concerned with conceptual design of structure is important. The method used in this paper combines three optimization techniques, where the shape and physical dimensions of the structure and material distribution are hierachically optimized, with the maximum rigidity of structure and lightweight.
In the fields of rail and road design, most vertical alignment design have been thus far heavily dependent upon trial-and-errors of experienced engineers. However, it has long been inefficient in productivity of designing process. In order to overcome this inefficiency, this paper presents the optimal vertical alignment design method using mathematical optimization techniques. For optimization, mathematical model to minimize the construction cost is formulated and the separable programming technique and the Zoutendijk method are introduced to solve it. As result, it is shown that this optimization technique can give efficient solutions to all vertical alignment design fields with properly-estimated cost function.
In this paper, we concentrate on the mask design problem for optical micro-lithography. The pre-distorted mask is obtained by minimizing the error between the designed output image and the projected output image. We use the particle swarm optimization(PSO) and fuzzy system to insure that the resulting images are identical to the desired image. Our method has good performance for the iteration number by an experiment.

In the paper, a hybrid technique is proposed for detecting the location and capacity of distributed generation (DG) sources like wind and photovoltaic (PV) in power system. The novelty of the proposed method is the combined performance of both the Biography Based Optimization (BBO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques. The mentioned techniques are the optimization techniques, which are used for optimizing the optimum location and capacity of the DG sources for radial distribution network. Initially, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is applied to obtain the available capacity of DG sources like wind and PV for 24 hours. The BBO algorithm requires radial distribution network voltage, real and power loss for determining the optimum location and capacity of the DG. Here, the BBO input parameters are classified into sub parameters and allowed as the PSO algorithm optimization process. The PSO synthesis the problem and develops the sub solution with the help of sub parameters. The BBO migration and mutation process is applied for the sub solution of PSO for identifying the optimum location and capacity of DG. For the analysis of the proposed method, the test case is considered. The IEEE standard bench mark 33 bus system is utilized for analyzing the effectiveness of the proposed method. Then the proposed technique is implemented in the MATLAB/simulink platform and the effectiveness is analyzed by comparing it with the BBO and PSO techniques. The comparison results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach and confirm its potential to solve the problem.

A new design approach of complex geometries such as wing/body configuration is arranged by using overset mesh techniques under large scale computing environment. For an in-depth study of the flow physics and highly accurate design, several special overlapped structured blocks such as collar grid, tip-cap grid, and etc. which are commonly used in refined drag prediction are adopted to consider the applicability of the present design tools to practical problems. Various pre- and post-processing techniques for overset flow analysis and sensitivity analysis are devised or implemented to resolve overset mesh techniques into the design optimization problem based on Gradient Based Optimization Method (GBOM). In the pre-processing, the convergence characteristics of the flow solver and sensitivity analysis are improved by overlap optimization method. Moreover, a new post-processing method, Spline-Boundary Intersecting Grid (S-BIG) scheme, is proposed by considering the ratio of cell area for more refined prediction of aerodynamic coefficients and efficient evaluation of their sensitivities under parallel computing environment. With respect to the sensitivity analysis, discrete adjoint formulations for overset boundary conditions are derived by a full hand-differentiation. A smooth geometric modification on the overlapped surface boundaries and evaluation of grid sensitivities can be performed by mapping from planform coordinate to the surface meshes with Hicks-Henne function. Careful design works for the drag minimization problems of a transonic wing and a wing/body configuration are performed by using the newly-developed and -applied overset mesh techniques. The results from design applications demonstrate the capability of the present design approach successfully.
Finite element (FE) model updating is a procedure to minimize the differences between analytical and experimental results, which can be usually posed as an optimization problem. This paper aims to introduce a hybrid optimization algorithm (GA-SA), which consists of a Genetic algorithm (GA) stage and an Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) stage, to FE model updating for a shrunk shaft. A good agreement of the first four natural frequencies has been achieved obtained from GASA based updated model (FEgasa) and experiment. In order to prove the validity of GA-SA, comparisons of natural frequencies obtained from the initial FE model (FEinit), GA based updated model (FEga) and ASA based updated model (FEasa) are carried out. Simultaneously, the FRF comparisons obtained from different FE models and experiment are also shown. It is concluded that the GA, ASA, GA-SA are powerful optimization techniques which can be successfully applied to FE model updating, the natural frequencies and FRF obtained from all the updated models show much better agreement with experiment than that obtained from FEinit model. However, FEgasa is proved to be the most reasonable FE model, and also FEasa model is better than FEga model.
