  • Numerical analyses have been carried out in order to check the applicability of high-strength steel to a medium-sized steel bridge. Using the yield strength of steel, Average Daily Truck Traffic (ADTT), and fatigue grade of structural detail as analytical parameters, the minimum weight sections that satisfy the limit states of the AASHTO LRFD design specification were determined through an optimization scheme. Likewise, the effects of the number of girders and span length on the applicability of high-strength steel were evaluated. Results show that high-strength steel may be employed in the steel bridge, since steel weight decreases with increasing yield strength regardless of the fatigue effect. Nonetheless, appropriate countermeasures against fatigue should be determined since it is a major factor in the effective use of high-strength steel in steel bridges.

  • A fractional step finite difference model for the longitudinal dispersion of nonconservative pollutants is applied to the Nakdong River to simulate the phenol spill accident which occurred on March, 1971. Prior to the dispersion calculation, the flow conditions are simulated to provide inputs to the dispersion model. An unsteady flow model based on Preissmann's four-point scheme is used for this purpose. Sensitivities of the dispersion calculation to empirical equations for dispersion coefficient and to the first-order decay coefficient are analyzed. The time to peak concentration at a downstream location is significantly different depending on the formula for the dispersion coefficient. Although the decay coefficient does not affect the shape of the temporal concentration distribution, the concentration values depend on the decay coefficient verb significantly. An optimization technique is used to calibrate the dispersion model as well as the flow model. The time to the peak concentration is simulated for major positions of water intake along the Nakdong River.

  • Recently, energy harvesting technology has been integrated into wireless sensor networks to ameliorate the nodes' energy limitation problem. In theory, the wireless sensor node equipped with an energy harvesting module can work permanently until hardware failures happen. However, due to the change of power supply, the traditional hierarchical network routing protocol can not be effectively adopted in energy harvesting wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we improve the Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol to make it suitable for the energy harvesting wireless sensor networks. Specifically, the cluster heads are selected according to the estimation of nodes' harvested energy and consumed energy. Preference is given to the nodes with high harvested energy while taking the energy consumption rate into account. The utilization of harvested energy is mathematically formulated as a max-min optimization problem which maximizes the minimum energy conservation of each node. We have proved that maximizing the minimum energy conservation is an NP-hard problem theoretically. Thus, a polynomial time algorithm has been proposed to derive the near-optimal performance. Extensive simulation results show that our proposed routing scheme outperforms previous works in terms of energy conservation and balanced distribution.

  • This paper introduces a scheme for optimizing the material properties of mass-spring systems of different resolutions to provide coherent behavior for reduced level-of-detail in MSS(Mass-Spring System) meshes. The global optimal material coefficients are derived to match the behavior of provided reference mesh. The proposed method also gives us insight into levels of reduction that we can achieve in the systematic behavioral coherency among the different resolution of MSS meshes. We obtain visually acceptable coherent behaviors for cloth models based on our proposed error metric and identify that this method can significantly reduce the resolution levels of simulated objects. In addition, we have confirmed coherent behaviors with different resolutions through various experimental validation tests. We analyzed spring force estimations through triangular Barycentric coordinates based from the reference MSS that uses a Gaussian kernel based distribution. Experimental results show that the displacement difference ratio of the node positions is less than 10% even if the number of nodes of $MSS^{sim}$ decreases by more than 50% compared with $MSS^{ref}$. Therefore, we believe that it can be applied to various fields that are requiring the real-time simulation technology such as VR, AR, surgical simulation, mobile game, and numerous other application domains.

  • Many studies which have been done for efficient installation and management of wireless sensor networks (WSN) include energy savings, key managements and sensor deployments. Sensor deployment problem is one of the most important and fundamental issues among them in that the topic is directly related with the system cost and performance. In this paper, we suggest a sensor deployment scheme that reduces the system cost of WSN while satisfying the fundamental system requirements of connectivity between sensor nodes and sensing coverage. Using graphical information system(GIS) which contains region-dependent information related with connectivity condition, the initial positions of sensors in the procedure simulated annealing (SA) are determined. The GIS information helps in reducing system cost reduction not only at the initial deployment of SA but also at the final deployment of SA which is shown by computer simulations.

  • Computer applications for engineering design evolve rapidly. Many design frameworks were developed by the simulation based systems so that organizations could achieve significant benefits due to cost reduction in designing. However, today’s transient design issue requires being adaptable to more complicated and atypical problems. In this paper the Multidisciplinary Language Runtime (MLR) design framework is developed. The MLR provides flexible and extensible interface between analysis modules and numerical analysis codes. It also supports Meta Modeling, Meta Variable, and XML script for atypical design formulation. By applying object-oriented design scheme to implement abstractions of the key components required for iterative systems analyses, the MLR provides flexible and extensible problem-solving environment.

  • The Upper Fenhe Reservoir System studied by KOWACO to supply water to Taiyuan City, capital of Shanxi Province in China, is a very complicated one. Many reservoirs will be connected serially and it will be operated as a multi-purpose and multi-criteria system because several objectives and appraisal functions are taken into account regarding system operation. For reservoirs in the system, the critical system operation objectives are to minimize water shortage and reservoir sediment. Furthermore the reservoir system will be jointed with a large-scale pumping system, namely Yellow River Diversion Project. The water development cost in the Yellow River Diversion Project is much higher than that of reservoir system, and around the year 2020 the diversion volume will be twice of the surface water available in the Upper Fenhe Basin. In this study, an optimization technique for connecting the system of reservoirs and pumping station was developed to solve a conjunctive low River Diversion Project. The developed scheme includes a suggestion on the combining methodology of real reservoir system and pumping system using imaginary reservoir concept for the Yellow River Diversion Project, and practical examples to the minimization problem of the Yellow River diversion satisfying other reservoir operation objectives.

  • Cooperative coevolutionary algorithm (CCEA) has proven to be a very powerful means of solving optimization problems through problem decomposition. CCEA implies the use of several populations, each population having the aim of finding a partial solution for a component of the considered problem. Populations evolve separately and they interact only when individuals are evaluated. Interactions are made to obtain complete solutions by combining partial solutions, or collaborators, from each of the populations. In this respect, we can think of various interaction modes. The goal of this research is to develop a CCEA for a supply chain network design (SCND) problem and identify which interaction mode gives the best performance for this problem. We present general design principle of CCEA for the SCND problem, which require several co-evolving populations. We classify these populations into two groups and classify the collaborator selection scheme into two types, the random-based one and the best fitness-based one. By combining both two groups of population and two types of collaborator selection schemes, we consider four possible interaction modes. We also consider two modes of updating populations, the sequential mode and the parallel mode. Therefore, by combining both four possible interaction modes and two modes of updating populations, we investigate seven possible solution algorithms. Experiments for each of these solution algorithms are conducted on a few test problems. The results show that the mode of the best fitness-based collaborator applied to both groups of populations combined with the sequential update mode outperforms the other modes for all the test problems.

  • Since self-organizing map (SOM) preserves the topology of ordering in input spaces and trains itself by unsupervised algorithm, it is Llsed in many areas. However, SOM has a shortcoming: structure cannot be easily detcrmined without many trials-and-errors. Structure-adaptive self-orgnizing map (SASOM) which can adapt its structure as well as its weights overcome the shortcoming of self-organizing map: SASOM makes use of structure adaptation capability to place the nodes of prototype vectors into the pattern space accurately so as to make the decision boundmies as close to the class boundaries as possible. In this scheme, the initialization of weights of newly adapted nodes is important. This paper proposes a method which optimizes SASOM with genetic algorithm (GA) to determines the weight vector of newly split node. The leanling algorithm is a hybrid of unsupervised learning method and supervised learning method using LVQ algorithm. This proposed method not only shows higher performance than SASOM in terms of recognition rate and variation, but also preserves the topological order of input patterns well. Experiments with 2D pattern space data and handwritten digit database show that the proposed method is promising.
