Direct-acting solenoid valves are used in the automotive industry due to their simple structure and quick response in controlling the flow of fluid. We performed an optimization study of response time in order to improve the dynamic performance of a direct-acting solenoid valve. For the optimal design process, we used the commercial optimization software PIAnO, which provides various tools for efficient optimization including design of experiments (DOE), approximation techniques, and a design optimization algorithm. 35 sampling points of computational experiments are performed to find the optimum values of the design variables. In all cases, ANSYS Maxwell electromagnetic analysis software was used to model the electromagnetic dynamics. An approximate model generated from the electromagnetic analysis was estimated and used for the optimization. The best optimization model was selected using the verified approximation model called the Kriging model, and an optimization algorithm called the progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM).
This paper presents an optimization procedure for reducing warpage of injection molded part by using a volumetric shrinkage deviation as an objective function. A design of experiments based on orthogonal arrays was used in the optimization procedure, and the entire optimization was performed through a two stage process - a preliminary experimentation and a principal experimentation. Proposed optimization method was applied to the design of a CPU-base part in computer. With the moderate number of experiments, an optimal molding condition for uniform distribution of volumetric shrinkage was obtained, as a result, the warpage of the molded part was significantly reduced.
Purpose: It is critical to design a set of experiments in Test and Evaluation Process for a weapon system. Because there is no sufficient resources in real-world, one must choose a subset of experiments which is considered to be more important. Methods: We introduce an optimization model for choosing the subset of experiments by considering a priority of experimental variable and level and restrictions of resources. We describe in detail how we construct objective function and constraints which must be a right realization of our logic and assumption. Conclusion: Since our optimization model turns out to be computationally difficult to solve, we introduce an algorithm for reducing the size of problem. Various computational results follows.
The structural optimization is carried out in the continuous design space or discrete design space. Methods for discrete variables such as genetic algorithms are extremely expensive in computational cost. In this research, an iterative optimization algorithm using orthogonal arrays is developed for design in discrete space. An orthogonal array is selected on a discrete design space and levels are selected from candidate values. Matrix experiments with the orthogonal array are conducted. New results of matrix experiments are obtained with penalty functions for constraints. A new design is determined from analysis of means(ANOM). An orthogonal array is defined around the new values and matrix experiments are conducted. The final optimum design is found from iterative process. The suggested algorithm has been applied to various problems such as truss and frame type structures. The results are compared with those from a genetic algorithm and discussed.
The purpose of this study is an optimization of gate valve made by forging method instead of welding method. In this study, we propose an optimal shape design to improve the mechanical efficiency of gate valve. In order to optimize more efficiently and reliably, the meta-modeling technique has been developed to solve such a complex problems combined with the DACE (Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments). The DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the function. Also, we prove reliability of the DACE model's application to gate valve by computer simulations using FEM(Finite Element Method).
A genetic algorithm was applied to an arc welding process to determine near optimal settings of welding process parameters which produce good weld quality. This method searches for optimal settings of welding parameters through systematic experiments without a model between input and output variables. It has an advantage of being able to find optimal conditions with a fewer number of experiments than conventional full factorial design. A genetic algorithm was applied to optimization of weld bead geometry. In the optimization problem, the input variables were wire feed rate, welding voltage, and welding speed, root opening and the output variables were bead height, bead width, penetration and back bead width. The number of level for each input variable is 8, 16, 8 and 3, respectively. Therefore, according to the conventional full factorial design, in order to find the optimal welding conditions, 3,072 experiments must be performed. The genetic algorithm, however, found the near optimal welding conditions from less than 48 experiments.

Robust design is one method to make manufacturing less sensitive to manufacturing process. Also it is cost effective technique to improve the quality process. This method uses statistically planned experiments to vary settings of important process control parameters. In this paper we apply fuzzy optimization and fuzzy logic system to robust design concept. First a method which uses fuzzy optimization in obtaining optimum settings by measured data from experiments will be presented. Second, fuzzy logic system is made to reduce experiments using experiments results consisted with key control parameter combinations. Then optimum parameter set points are obtained by the descrebed first fuzzy optimization method after prediction the results of each parameter combinations considering each control parameter variations by nonsingleton fuzzy logic system concept.
Optimization of existing processes becomes more important than the past as environmental problems and concerns about energy savings stand out. When we can model a process mathematically, we can easily optimize it by using the model as constraints. However, modeling is very difficult for most chemical processes as they include numerous units together with their correlation and we can hardly obtain parameters. Therefore, optimization that is based on the process models is, in turn, hard to perform. Especially, f3r unknown processes, such as bioprocess or microelectronics materials process, optimization using mathematical model (first principle model) is nearly impossible, as we cannot understand the inside mechanism. Consequently, we propose a few optimization method using empirical model evolutionarily instead of mathematical model. In this method, firstly, designing experiments is executed fur removing unecessary experiments. D-optimal DOE is the most developed one among DOEs. It calculates design points so as to minimize the parameters variances of empirical model. Experiments must be performed in order to see the causation between input variables and output variables as only correlation structure can be detected in historical data. And then, using data generated by experiments, empirical model, i.e. response surface is built by PLS or MLR. Now, as process model is constructed, it is used as objective function for optimization. As the optimum point is a local one. above procedures are repeated while moving to a new experiment region fur finding the global optimum point. As a result of application to the pulp digester benchmark model, kappa number that is an indication fur impurity contents decreased to very low value, 3.0394 from 29.7091. From the result, we can see that the proposed methodology has sufficient good performance fur optimization, and is also applicable to real processes.
