  • The tool geometry parameters and cutting process have complex relationships. Until now, various cutting test were needed to acquire optimal design of end mill for the purpose of high speed machining, due to the insufficient knowledge about cutting process in high speed machining. Using various tools with different geometry, relationships between tool geometry parameter (rake angle, clearance angle, length of cutter) and cutting process (cutting force, surface accuracy, surface roughness) have been studied. Acquired data can be used to design optimal tool for high speed machining and to develop a software for design of end mill geometry.

  • Recent engineering process requires fast development and manufacturing of the products. This paper mainly discusses the process of rapid product development (RPD) from the reverse engineering to the optimal design. A laser scanning system scans a product and the efficient data processing method reduces the scanned point data. The reduced (scanned) points model is transformed to a finite element model without the construction of a CAD model. Since CAD modeling is a time-consuming work, skipping this step can save much time. This FE model is updated from the result based on the structural characteristics from modal test of the real model. For FE model updating, Response Surface Method is adopted. Finally, the updated FE model is optimized using the reliability-based topology optimization, which is developed recently. All these processes are applied to the design of an upper part model of a cellular phone.

  • The most important process of engineering system optimal design is to identify the relationship between the design variables and system response. In case of the system optimization, Response Surface Method (RSM) is widely used. The optimization process of RSM generates the design space using the typical alternative candidates and finds the optimal design point in the generated design space. By changing the optimal point depending on the configuration of the design space, it is important to generate the design space. Therefor in this study, the design space is generated by using the relationship between design variables and system response based on Neuro-Response Surface Method (NRSM). And I try to construct the framework for optimal shape design based on NRSM that the optimum shape can be predicted using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) within the generated design space. In order to verify the usefulness of the constructed framework, we applied the nonlinear mathematical function problem. In this study, we can solve the constraints of time in the optimization process for the engineering problem and effective to determine the optimal design was possible. by using the generated framework for optimal shape design based on NRSM. In the future research, we try to apply the optimization problem for Naval Architectural & Ocean Engineering based on the results of this study.

  • This study aims to develop a potential evaluation method for urban spatial expansion using remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS). A multi-criteria evaluation method with several criteria and their weighting values was introduced to evaluate the score and quantification of the potential surface around the existing cities. The six criteria with one geographic factor, slope, and five accessibility factors, time distance from center of the city, national road, interchange of expressway, a big city, and station, were defined for the potential. RS techniques were applied for classification of the actual urban expansion maps between two periods, and GIS functions were used for score of accessibility criteria with a distance decay function from geographic, road and several point maps, which was developed in this study. The new methodology was applied to a test area, Suwon, between 1986 and 1996. In order to optimize the six weighting values, this study made new findings to search the optimal combination of the weighting values from new methodology, weighted scenario method for intensity order (WSM), combined with intensity order and AHP method, including a trial and error method for sensitivity analysis to make the intensity order. The optimal combination of the weighting values by the new method generated the optimal potential surface, considering spatial trend of urban expansion in the test area.

  • This study optimized the mixing ratios of seafood sauce with blue crab for maximal sensory attributes using a response surface methodology with central composite design. It evaluated sensory appeal, nutritional value, and some rheological properties. The optimal formulation appeared to be 252 g of tomato paste, 78 g of chopped garlic, and 519 g of blue crab block; this ratio resulted in a predicted sensory score of 5.7 (on a 7-point scale) for overall acceptability. Addition of blue crab block increased moisture, ash, and protein contents in various sauces, but fat contents were similar in every sauce. Major free amino acids such as glutamic acid, phospho serine, asparagine, and arginine composed about $60\%$ of the total amino acid content. Standard and optimized sauces were red and light yellow, and those color values were significantly higher than in American-style sauces. Optimal viscosity was half the value of American-style sauces; more blue crab block added to the sauce resulted in lower viscosity. Adding this sauce to seafood dishes will likely aid development of flavoring substances.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) empirically studies the relationship between a response variable and input variables in the product or process development phase. The ultimate goal of RSM is to find an optimal condition of the input variables that optimizes (maximizes or minimizes) the response variable. RSM can be seen as a knowledge management tool in terms of creating and utilizing data, information, and knowledge about a product production and service operations. In the field of product or process development, most real-world problems often involve a simultaneous consideration of multiple response variables. This is called a multiple response surface (MRS) problem. Various approaches have been proposed for MRS optimization, which can be classified into loss function approach, priority-based approach, desirability function approach, process capability approach, and probability-based approach. In particular, the loss function approach is divided into univariate and multivariate approaches at large. This paper focuses on the univariate approach. The univariate approach first obtains the mean square error (MSE) for individual response variables. Then, it aggregates the MSE's into a single objective function. It is common to employ the weighted sum or the Tchebycheff metric for aggregation. Finally, it finds an optimal condition of the input variables that minimizes the objective function. When aggregating, the relative weights on the MSE's should be taken into account. However, there are few studies on how to determine the weights systematically. In this study, we propose an interactive procedure to determine the weights through considering a decision maker's preference. The proposed method is illustrated by the 'colloidal gas aphrons' problem, which is a typical MRS problem. We also discuss the extension of the proposed method to the weighted MSE (WMSE).

  • The measurement study of instantaneous temperature at combustion chamber wall and the temperature of combustion gas has been under lots of research and development to conclude the temperature process in internal combustion engine for combustion characteristics analysis. The measurement with fast responsibility should be used for temperature measurement inside combustion chamber wall since temperature of wall changes, due to the various gas temperature, irregularly during the combustion. Therefore, thin film instantaneous surface temperature probe, which characterizes the fastest and the most accurate responsibility among contact typed temperature measurement, was used for the experiments. This new thin film instantaneous surface temperature probe improved the problems of noise and durability. The optimal coating thickness of thin film instantaneous surface temperature probe was proven to be $10{\mu}m$ for the best responsibility and durability. It also allowed the stable temperature measurement be taken up to $1,200^{\circ}C$ and proven to be read possibly from the combustion chamber wall.

  • New materials widely used for automobile related industry, aircraft, space development area are mostly high hardness materials. The hardness value of some hardened materials is over HRC45 and machining of this hardened materials is called as hard turning. Hard turning has its advantage on processing flexibility, cycle time and tool cost reduction. Also this process obtains high efficiency in processing and precise surface roughness through application of the CBN tools. In hard turning process with CBN tool, surface integrity is the important factor for considering the design of machine part and component under high stress and load conditions. A purpose of this study is to analyze optimal condition in hard turning process of AISI 52100 steel (HRC62) with high CBN and low CBN on turning characteristics, tool wear mechanism comparison and surface integrity.

  • The automation technology for overlay welding is needed due to the occurrence of severe corrosion and abrasion on the surface of internal contact in different shape of fittings. In Korea, different shapes of fittings have been manufactured by using the imported equipment of overlay welding automation at some companies. Thus the research on the development of overlay welding automation system (in short, OWAS) for a large L-type tube is urgently needed. In this paper, the investigation is focused on the optimal design of a supporting base for the (currently developing) OWAS of large L-type tube. Specifically we assume that the base which supports the equipment during the process of overlay welding is loaded as self-weight in the direction of gravity through static analysis especially when it is rotated 180 degree on the OWAS. For optimal design of a supporting base for OWAS of large L-type tube, Solidworks(R) (for 3-dimensional modelling) and ANASYS Workbench(R) (for structural analysis) are incorporated so as to proceed an optimization routines based on Response Surface Method (RSM) and Design of Experiment (DOE). In more specific, DOE finds out major factors (or dimensions) of the supporting base by using MINITAB(R). Then the regression equations between design variables (the major factors of supporting base) and response variables (deformation, stress and safety factor for the supporting base), which will be resulted in by RSM, verify the major factors of DOE. In the next step, Central Composite Design (CCD) plans 20 simulations of ANASYS Workbench(R) and then figures out the optimal values of design variables which will be reflected on the manufacturing of supporting base. Finally welding experiment is conducted to figure out the influence of overlay welding quality in applying the optimized design values of supporting base to the actual OWAS.

  • This study aimed at developing integrated logic for controlling heating device and openings of the double skin facade buildings. Two major logics were developed-rule-based control logic and artificial neural network based control logic. The rule based logic represented the widely applied conventional method while the artificial neural network based logic meant the optimal method. Applying the optimal method, the predictive and adaptive controls were feasible for supplying the advanced thermal indoor environment. Comparative performance tests were conducted using the numerical computer simulation tools such as MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) and TRNSYS (Transient Systems Simulation). Analysis on the test results in the test module revealed that the artificial neural network-based control logics provided more comfortable and stable temperature conditions based on the optimal control of the heating device and opening conditions of the double skin facades. However, the amount of heat supply to the indoor space by the optimal method was increased for the better thermal conditioning. The number of on/off moments of the heating device, on the other hand, was significantly reduced. Therefore, the optimal logic is expected to beneficial to create more comfortable thermal environment and to potentially prevent system degradation.
