In this paper, an algorithm for determining the optimal resolution has been described for measuring the actual length of circular objects. As the resolution gets higher, the measurement error in general becomes smaller because of the reduced distance per pixel. However, the higher resolution makes circular objects enlarged, which may produce an ill-conditioned system. That is, a small error in the boundary positions may result in a large error in the analysis of the circular objects. Taking this fact into account, a new measure is proposed to determine the optimal resolution. The actual errors have been calculated with various resolutions and the resolution with the minimum error has been decided as the optimal resolution. The analysis using various circles with different sizes indicates that the minimum measurement error is obtained when the whole circle appears in the screen as large as possible, regardless of the size of circle. The experimental results using real images have verified the validity of our analysis.
Most of the control problem is for the redundant manipulators use the pseudo-inverse control, thit is, the redundancy is resolved by the pseudo-inverse of the Jacobian matrix and then the controller is designed based on this resolution. However, this pseudo-inverse control has some problems when the redundant robot repeats the cyclic tasks. This is because the pseudo-inverse resolution is a local solution that generates the different configurations of the robot arm for the same hand position. Therefore it is necessary to find the global solution that maintains the optimal configuration of the robot for the repetitive tasks. In this paper, we want to propose a redundancy resolution method by the optimal theory that uses the calculus of variation. The problem formulations are : first to convert the optimal resolution problem to an optimal control problem and then to resolve the redundancy using the necessary conditions of optimal control.
This paper proposes a numerical method for redundant manipulators using predetermined optimal resolution. In order to obtain optimal joint trajectories, it is desirable to formulate redundancy resolution as an optimization problem having an integral cost criterion. We predetermine the trajectories of redundant joints in terms of the Nth partial sum of the Fourier series, which lead to the solution in the desirable homotopy class. Then optimal coefficients of the Fourier series, which yield the optimal solution within the predetermined class, are searched by the Powell's method. The proposed method is applied to a 3-link planar manipulator for cyclic tasks in Cartesian space. As the results, we can obtain the optimal solution in the desirable homotopy class without topological liftings of the solution. To show the validity of the proposed method, we analyze both optimal and extremal solutions by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and discuss joint trajectories on the phase plane.
Purpose: The orthogonality and trace optimal properties are desirable for constructing designs of experiments. This article focuses on the determination of the sizes of experiments for the balanced trace optimal resolution-V fractional factorial designs for 2-level factorial designs, which have near-orthogonal properties. Methods: In this paper, first we introduce the trace optimal $2^t$ fractional factorial designs for $4{\leq}t{\leq}7$, by exploiting the partially balanced array for various cases of experimental sizes. Moreover some orthogonality criteria are also suggested with which the degree of the orthogonality of the designs can be evaluated. And we appraise the orthogonal properties of the introduced designs from various aspects. Results: We evaluate the orthogonal properties for the various experimental sizes of the balanced trace optimal resolution-V fractional factorial designs of the 2-level factorials in which each factor has two levels. And the near-orthogonal 2-level balanced trace optimal resolution-V fractional factorial designs are suggested, which have adequate sizes of experiments. Conclusion: We can construct the trace optimal $2^t$ fractional factorial designs for $4{\leq}t{\leq}7$ by exploiting the results suggested in this paper, which have near-orthogonal property and appropriate experimental sizes. The suggested designs can be employed usefully especially when we intend to analyze both the main effects and two factor interactions of the 2-level factorial experiments.
The spectral color resolution of an image is very important in color image analysis. Two factors influencing the spectral color resolution of an image are illumination intensity and lens aperture for a selected vision system. An optimal combination of illumination intensity and lens aperture for color image analysis was determined in the study. The method was based on a model of dynamic range defined as the absolute difference between digital values of selected foreground and background color in the image. The role of illumination intensity in machine vision was also described and a computer program for simulating the optimal combination of two factors was implemented for verifying the related algorithm. It was possible to estimate the non-saturating range of the illumination intensity (input voltage in the study) and the lens aperture by using a model of dynamic range. The method provided an optimal combination of the illumination intensity and the lens aperture, maximizing the color resolution between colors of interest in color analysis, and the estimated color resolution at the combination for a given vision system configuration.

This paper proposes a new reconstruction method of high-resolution facial image from a low-resolution facial image based on a recursive error back-projection of top-down machine learning. A face is represented by a linear combination of prototypes of shape and texture. With the shape and texture information about the pixels in a given low-resolution facial image, we can estimate optimal coefficients for a linear combination of prototypes of shape and those of texture by solving least square minimization. Then high-resolution facial image can be obtained by using the optimal coefficients for linear combination of the high-resolution prototypes, In addition to, a recursive error back-projection is applied to improve the accuracy of synthesized high-resolution facial image. The encouraging results of the proposed method show that our method can be used to improve the performance of the face recognition by applying our method to reconstruct high-resolution facial images from low-resolution one captured at a distance.

This paper describes a redundancy resolution based method for determining an optimal initial configuration of a humanoid robot for holding an object. There are three important aspects for a humanoid robot to be able to hold an object. Those three aspects are the reachability that guarantees the robot to reach the object, the stability that guarantees the robot to remain stable while moving or holding the object, and the manipulability that makes the robot manipulate the object dexterously. In this paper, a humanoid robot with 20 degrees of freedom is considered. The humanoid robot is kinematically redundant and has infinite number of solutions for the initial configuration problem. The complex three-dimensional redundancy resolution problem is divided into two simple two-dimensional redundancy resolution problems by incorporating the symmetry of the problem, robot's moving capability, and the geometrical characteristics of the given robot. An optimal solution with respect to the reachability, the stability, and the manipulability is obtained by solving these two redundancy resolution problems.

The Quality and Accuracy of digital image is important factor for decision of accuracy in digital photogrammetry because all the inside works in digital photogrammetry are based on digital image. But it is still difficult to ensure quality assurance and appication of data because there is no distinct criterion about quality and accuracy of digital image when the works in digital photogrammetry is accomplished. This study presents optimal resolution of aerial photo through error analysis of image coordinate using auto inner orientation in digital photograrnrnetry workstation. In second step, we are valified to optimum resolution of aerial photo image with orientation analysis. Finally, we are established to validity optimal resolution of aerial photo image with production of ortho image and mosaic image using optimal resolution aerial photo image.

The effect of the grid resolution on the hydrodynamic simulation has been investigated by using CCHE2D and EFDC. Since a high resolution of the grid results in the increase of computation time, an appropriate grid resolution should be selected by considering the efficiency of simulation according to the objectives of projects. In order to understand the effect of grid resolution and determine the optimal grid resolution, several cases with different lateral grid resolutions have been simulated for the reach of Nakdong river at the confluence of Kumho river for the floods in 2006. Orthogonal curvilinear grids for the domain have been constructed from the survey products at the sections with the longitudinal interval of 20 m. Area-elevation curve and the comparison of simulated results with measured stage at the specific station have been used to check the effect of grid resolution. From the results, the existence of optimal grid resolution has been observed, which ensure both efficiency of computation and certainty of results.
It Is a typical scenario in concurrent engineering/design that different perspectives of each team members participating In the project exist, and those perspectives lead to conflicting decisions. The model 'resolution network' proposed in this work provides system-mediated resolution for all related team engineers to consider to optimize the manufacture in general. This paper focuses on development of the general architecture of the model and a search engine called Mediator to determine a resolution network from a given constraint network. The Mediator manages the constraint network, determines the most optimistic resolution called optimal point in terms of satisfying overall production goal , and use the optimal point to mediate controversial issues among teams. The biggest merit of our model is that it provides teams with resolution with logical and rational reasoning.
