A Study on Optimal Electric Load distribution of Generators on board using a Dynamic Programming (동적계획법을 이용한 선내 발전시스템의 최적부하분담 방법에 관한 연구)

  • Since the oil crisis, we have been concerned about the energy saving techniques of electric generating systems. As a part of the effort to save energy, automatic electric load sharing device was developed. Usually, ship's electric generating system consists of two or three sets of generator. And, electric generating system is operated as single or parallel operation mode according to the demanded electric power. Therefore, it is important to investigate generators operating mode for the supply of required electric power in the ship in order to decrease the operating cost. So, this paper suggests the method to solve the optimal electric load distribution problem by dynamic programming. And, this thesis indicates that the proposed method is superior to the lagrange multiplier's method in obtaining optimal load distribution solution in the ship's electric generating system.

A Study on Determination of Optimal Incentives of DSM Programs by Linear Programming (선형계획법에 의한 수요관리 프로그램의 최적 지원금 결정에 관한 연구)

  • A lot of DSM (Demand Side Management) programs have been implemented to promote the effective utilization of resources and the rational development of power industry, and various economic analyses and policy-based studies on DSM have been executed to determine effective subsidy budget. In this paper, a new objective function for deciding an optimal incentive allocation among various programs is presented by introducing the maximization of the total saving power of the programs. For simplicity, the objective function and the constraints is linearized to apply LP(Linear Programming) method. LP program based on Simplex Method was developed by MATLAB. An optimal incentive allocation of 4 DSM programs is presented by the use of the developed MATLAB program.

A Cost/Worth Approach to Evaluate UPFC Impact on ATC

  • Available transfer capability (ATC) is a measure of the transfer capability remaining in a transmission system. Application of unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) could have positive impacts on the ATC of some paths while it might have a negative impact on the ATC of other paths. This paper presents an approach to evaluate the impacts of UPFCs on the ATC from a cost/worth point of view. The UPFC application worth is considered as the maximum cost saving in enhancing the ATC of the paths due to the UPFC implementation. The cost saving is considered as the cost of optimal application of other system reinforcement alternatives (except for UPFC) to reach the same ATC level obtained by UPFC application. UPFC application costs include the maximum cost of alleviating the probable negative impact on the ATC of some paths caused by implementing UPFCs. Optimal system reinforcement is used for systems with UPFCs to determine the aforementioned cost. The proposed method is applied to the IEEERTS and the results are evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. The cost/worth of UPFC application is also used to develop an index for optimal UPFC location and the results are compared with those of other indices. A comparison is finally made with the results obtained using an existing ATC allocation profit-based approach to determine UPFC application worth.

Energy-Efficient Scheduling with Individual Packet Delay Constraints and Non-Ideal Circuit Power

  • Exploiting the energy-delay tradeoff for energy saving is critical for developing green wireless communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the delay-constrained energy-efficient packet transmission. We aim to minimize the energy consumption of multiple randomly arrived packets in an additive white Gaussian noise channel subject to individual packet delay constraints, by taking into account the practical on-off circuit power consumption at the transmitter. First, we consider the offline case, by assuming that the full packet arrival information is known a priori at the transmitter, and formulate the energy minimization problem as a non-convex optimization problem. By exploiting the specific problem structure, we propose an efficient scheduling algorithm to obtain the globally optimal solution. It is shown that the optimal solution consists of two types of scheduling intervals, namely "selected-off" and "always-on" intervals, which correspond to bits-per-joule energy efficiency maximization and "lazy scheduling" rate allocation, respectively. Next, we consider the practical online case where only causal packet arrival information is available. Inspired by the optimal offline solution, we propose a new online scheme. It is shown by simulations that the proposed online scheme has a comparable performance with the optimal offline one and outperforms the design without considering on-off circuit power as well as the other heuristically designed online schemes.

Experimental Study on Optimal Operation Strategies for Energy Saving in Building Central Cooling System (건물 중앙냉방시스템의 에너지절감을 위한 최적운전 방안에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, optimal operation strategies to save the electric energy and power price in the building central cooling system is researched by experiments. The optimal strategies of demand response control and outdoor temperature reset control algorithms are applied by consideration the electric energy and power price according to the energy consumption characteristics. The suggested optimal control method shows better responses in the power price and energy consumption in comparison with the conventional one and saves energy consumption by 9.5% and electronic price by 15.7%, respectively.

  • High frequency full bridge series resonant inverters have become increasingly popular among power supply designers. One of the most important parameter for a High Frequency Full Bridge Series Resonant Inverter is optimal coil design. The optimal coil designing procedure is not a easy task. This paper deals with the New Approach to Optimal Design Procedure for a Real-time High Frequency Full Bridge Series Resonant Inverter in Induction Heating Equipment devices. A new design to experimental modelling of the physical properties and a practical power input simulation process for the non-sinusoidal input waveform is accepted. The design sensitivity analysis with Levenberg-Marquardt technique is used for the optimal design process. The proposed technique is applied to an Induction Heating Equipment devices model and the result is verified by real-time experiment. The main advantages of this design technique is to achieve more accurate temperature control with a huge amount of power saving.

LED array design for optimal combination of plant grown (식물재배를 위한 최적LED 배열조합설계)

  • This paper is suitable for household plant factory by design and using both energy-saving LED and solar technology. Conventional household plant factory only depending on natural sunlight is sensitive for the change of external environment. Another a big problem of conventional common household plant factory is large power consumption. Recently interest in wellbeing food such as chemical-free is increased abruptly. To solve these two problems, this paper describes hybrid type of household plant. In particular, reducing the power photosynthesis photon flux density (PPFD) is kept uniform to enhance the growth of the plant. Ambient light sensor is adopted for the control of proper combination of sunlight and LED to keep PPFD constant.

  • Recently, most of the countries started to regulate the emission of vehicle because of the global warming. The engine scooter is also one of the factor which cause the pollution. The hybrid system of a vehicle has many advantages such as fuel saving and emission reduction. The purpose of this study is to choose optimal size of engine, motor and battery for hybrid scooter system using Dynamic programming. The dynamic programming is an effective method to find an optimal solution for the complicated nonlinear system, which contains various constraints of control variables. The power source size of hybrid scooter was chosen through the backward simulator using dynamic programming. From the analysis, we choose the optimal size of each power source. To verify the optimal size of the power source, the Forward simulation was carried out. As a result, the fuel efficiency of hybrid scooter has significantly increased in comparison with that of engine scooter.

  • Analyze the customer daily load patterns, be used to determine the optimal charging and discharging schedule which can minimize the electrical charges through the battery energy storage system(BESS) installed in consumers is an object of this paper. BESS, which analyzes the load characteristics of customer and reduce the peak load, is essential for optimal charging and discharging scheduling to save electricity charges. This thesis proposes optimal charging and discharging scheduling method, using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and penalty function method, of BESS for reducing energy charge. Since PSO is a global optimization algorithm, best charging and discharging scheduling can be found effectively. In addition, penalty function method was combined with PSO in order to handle many constraint conditions. After analysing the load patterns of target BESS, PSO based on penalty function method was applied to get optimal charging and discharging schedule.

Research on using the exhausted heat from subway tunnel as unused energy (미활용 에너지원으로서의 지하철 배열이용에 관한 연구)

  • Researches on unused energy are being continued because of the limited fossil fuel and the destruction of environment. Therefore this study was peformed as follows. The collectable amount of exhausted heat for an air-conditioning was calculated by the subway thermal environment prediction program. And the electric power needed by conventional heat source equipments was compared with one by unused heat source equipments when the exhausted heat was used by heat pump in heating and hot water supplying. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Forced ventilation should be conducted to keep optimal temperature in subway tunnel in summer as well as in winter. According to the simulation, temperature in tunnel was higher than that on the ground in summer when the forced ventilation was conducted only in winter. 2) Ventilating time should be calculated out to the optimal condition for not only saving power of ventilation fan but reusing exhausted heat. By the simulation, it is certain that the exhausted heat should be eliminated in air-conditioning time. 3) The use of exhausted heat source heat pump could save 8% of electric power per hour in comparison with existing heat pump. It was based on a present heat generation and traffic for ventilating time of general air-conditioning, but could be different by ventilating time. 4) As the traffic increases up to 1.5 or 2 times, electric power consumption of the conventional heat pump increases to 11% or 13.5% per mean hour in comparison with that of the exhausted heat source heat pump, though all-day ventilation.
