  • In this paper, we perform a research on a message delivery link based on visible light communication using illumination light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for car-to-car communications and the link transmission success probability is analyzed for the link. The message delivery system is modeled and the signal-to-noise ratio is calculated from the received optical power. Then, the link transmission probability is estimated from the calculated bit error rates (BERs). The message delivery system has optical links from an LED transmitter near the rear lamp of a car ahead to a receiver near the headlamp of a car behind, whose positions are assumed to follow the normal Gaussian distribution. The link transmission success probability is calculated considering the physical characteristics of the optical link. The car positions are generated according to the normal distribution and the bit error rates are calculated for all links. The link transmission success probability is defined. For the unoptimized optical car-to-car message delivery links, it is shown that the link transmission success probability is larger than 0.9 with the transmitted optical power of 400 mW and the semi-angle at half power of 30 degree.

  • We propose portable equipment that monitors current and voltage of high-potential power transmission lines. In the equipment, a current and voltage sensor are attached to an insulator that supports a power transmission line: A clamped to the power line and the detected current signal is transmitted to the ground station by a wireless optical link using transmission line is detected by a high resistance element, zinc oxide (ZnO). That acts as a potential divider between the power line and ground. We make an experimental device for 66kV power line and demonstrate that it can monitor currents proposed equipment is small-sized, light, and inexpensive in comparison with the conventional CT (current transformer) and PT (potential transformer) since it does not require high potential insulators and magnetic cores, further, the equipment is easily installed owing to its small size and its simple structure.

  • Mobile operators will face many challenges both economically and technically, as WLAN evolve through a bewildering number of different standards during the coming years. Potentially this will require several upgrades to the mobile infrastructure. A new approach for addressing these challenges is evaluated in this paper. It is based on a radio over fiber (RoF) technology that uses electro-absorption modulator (EAM) and optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation technique and it promises to provide solutions that will be transparent to changes in protocols and frequency of operation as well as reducing radio access infrastructure costs. This paper describes the development of prototype RoF system based on the 60GHz band CATV transport distribution system with EAM and the possibility of radio over fiber technology for use in the broadband convergence network (BcN) wireless access infrastructure.

  • In this paper, we have studied a dimming level control method to satisfy both lighting and communication performance in visible light communication system. In the case of the most commonly used OOK and RZ-OOK modulation schemes, continuous Burst Zero Duration will seriously degrade the lighting function. This causes not only the illumination but also the performance of the entire system to deteriorate. Through this study, we analyzed the dimming level characteristics of the existing system and proposed the Illegal Pulse Insertion (IPI) algorithm as a technique to increase the dimming level. Through this, it is possible to effectively control the dimming level and improve the QoS of both lighting and communication by resolving the flicker phenomenon and dimming level reduction in the existing modulation and demodulation system.

  • Visible light identification (VLID) is a user identification system for a door lock application using smartphone that adopts visible light communication (VLC) technology with the objective of high security, small form factor, and cost effectiveness. The user is verified by the identification application program of a smartphone via fingerprint recognition or password entry. If the authentication succeeds, the corresponding encoded visible light signals are transmitted by a light emitting diode (LED) camera flash. Then, only a small size and low cost photodiode as an outdoor interface converts the light signal to the digital data along with a comparator, and runs the authentication process, and releases the lock. VLID can utilize powerful state-of-the-art hardware and software of smartphones. Furthermore, the door lock system is allowed to be easily upgraded with advanced technologies without its modification and replacement. It can be upgraded by just update the software of smartphone application or replacing the smartphone with the latest one. Additionally, wireless connection between a smartphone and a smart home hub is established automatically via Bluetooth for updating the password and controlling the home devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a prototype VLID door lock system that is built up with LEGO blocks, a photodiode, a comparator circuit, Bluetooth module, and FPGA board.

  • This paper proposes a new optic link structure applicable to broad-band wireless access microcellularsystem servicing in the millimeter wave frequency band. The proposed structure utilizes photonic mixing by exploiting the nonlinear property of EOMs, which leads to the frequency up-conversion at the CS and thus, electrical mixing at a BS is not required. Moreover, via transmitting an additional optical millimeter wave carrier into the Bs, the dispenses with an active optic source, which miniaturizes the BS. We analyze CNR, IM3/C in the downlink and SFDR in the uplink. Through simulation using the typical parameter values we also show the feasibility of the proposed system based on the requirements in the current microcellular system.

  • We propose a visible light communication system in which the color and brightness are controllable. Pulse width modulation and variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) schemes are used to control the color and brightness, respectively. A digital algorithm to decode VPPM signals is suggested and implemented. A seamless transmission is observed in a testbed experiment under various environmental conditions. The proposed scheme can be applied to emotional-lighting-based wireless optical communication.

The structure is composed of sixphase agents and one intersection agent. Wireless communication network provides the possibility of the cooperation of agents. As one kind of reinforcement learning, Q-learning is adopted as the algorithm of the control mechanism, which can acquire optical control strategies from delayed reward; furthermore, we adopt dynamic learning method instead of static method, which is more practical. Simulation result indicates that it is more effective than traditional signal system.
