The performance of turbo codes is investigated in the direct detection optical PPM channel. We assume that an ideal photon counter is used as an optical detector and that the channel has background noise as well as quantum noise. Resulting channel model is M-ary PPM Poisson channel. We propose the structure of the transmitter and receiver for applying turbo codes to this channel. We also derive turbo decoding algorithm for the proposed coding system, by modifying the calculation of the branch metric inherent in the original turbo decoding algorithm developed for the AWGN channel. Analytical bounds are derived and computer simulation is performed to analyze the performance of the proposed coding scheme, and the results are compared with the performances of Reed-Solomon codes and convolutional codes.
Diffuse optical wireless (DOW) systems have the advantage that they do not require point-to-point siting so one transmitter can communicate with several receivers. In this paper, we investigate multiple access scheduling methods for downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in diffuse optical wireless networks. Unlike the radio frequency (RF) channel, the DOW channel has low-pass filter characteristics and so requires different scheduling methods than those developed for the RF channel. Multi-user diversity orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems nominate a cluster of subcarriers with the largest signal-to-noise-ratio for transmission. However, in a DOW channel, most users would choose the lowest frequency clusters of subcarriers. To remedy this problem, we make two proposals. The first is to use a variable cluster size across the subcarriers; the lower frequency clusters will have fewer subcarriers while the higher frequency clusters will have more subcarriers. This will equalize the capacity of the clusters. The second proposal is to randomize a user's cluster selection from a group of clusters satisfying a minimum threshold. Through simulation it is shown that combining these strategies can increase the throughput while ensuring a fair distribution of the available spectrum.

A CubeSat platform has become a popular choice due to inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and low launch cost. However, it requires more power-efficient and higher-data rate downlink capability for space applications related to remote sensing. In addition, the platform is limited by the size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints as well as the regulatory issue of licensing the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The requirements and limitations have put optical communications on promising alternatives to RF communications for a CubeSat platform, owing to the power efficiency and high data rate as well as the license free spectrum. In this study, we analyzed the performance of optical downlink communications compatible with CubeSat platforms in terms of data rate, bit error rate (BER) and outage probability. Mathematical models of BER and outage probability were derived based on not only the log-normal model of atmospheric turbulence but also a transmitter with a finite extinction ratio. Given the fixed slot width, the optimal guard time and modulation orders were chosen to achieve the target data rate. And the two performance metrics, BER and outage data rate, were analyzed and discussed with respect to beam divergence angle, scintillation index and zenith angle.

We propose a turbulence-tolerant Manchester on-off keying (M-OOK) transmission for free-space optical (FSO) communication. At the transmitter end, a M-OOK signal featuring a spectrum with low-frequency components absent is modulated and transmitted into a turbulent channel. At the receiver end, a low-pass filter (LPF) -based adaptive-threshold decision (ATD) with LPF-extracted channel-state information (CSI) and a high-pass filter (HPF)-based fixed-threshold decision (FTD) are employed to compensate for the effects of turbulence, owing to the low-frequency spectral characteristics of the turbulent channel. The performance of LPF-based ATD and HPF-based FTD are evaluated for various cutoff frequencies for the LPF and HPF. Besides, the proposed M-OOK transmission is compared to conventional non-return-to-zero OOK (NRZ-OOK) for different data rates. The proposed technique is verified in simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed M-OOK detection with optimized cutoff frequencies of LPF and HPF has better bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared to NRZ-OOK, and it is close to the theoretical ATD with the knowledge of precise CSI under various degrees of turbulence effects.
A configuration scheme of optical link effectively compensating chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects accumulated in optical link with single mode fibers (SMFs) is proposed. The proposed optical link configuration consist of optical phase conjugator (OPC) placed at middle of total transmission length and inline dispersion management (DM) as a role of compensating cumulated in each optical repeater of SMF by dispersion compensating fiber (DCF). Net residual dispersion (NRD) of this optical link is designed to be controlled through precompensation and postcompensating. The precompensation and postcompensation are designed to be determined by DCF after transmitter and before receiver, respectively. It is confirmed that optical link configuration with symmetric dispersion map with respect to OPC, which is implemented by controlling NRD through both precompensation and postcompensation, is better to be effective and adaptive than other configuration with NRD controlled by only precompensation or postcompensation.

The VLC (visible light communication) system is communication technology using visible rays (RGB) that come out in LED device. It is energy curtailment effect and possible in ubiquitous network service applications. Also, VLC system has the above advantage about that the communication throughout the whole room is enabled by high power lighting and lighting equipment with white colored LED which are easy to install and have good outward appearance. However, the signal detection performance for the receiver near the network of transmitter boundary is severely degraded and the transmission efficiency decreased due to the influence of the interference signal from the adjacent networks. In this paper, we propose an interference mitigation method with optical relay and optical beamforming scheme in VLC systems, and evaluate the reception performance. For the system BER, the proposed system demonstrates the performance enhancement compared to the not using the optical relay and optical beamforming scheme, and SNR performance gain and higher channel capacity is achieved.
This study was conducted to the improvement of solar light-based artificial light supply system and effect of lettuce cultivation. The artificial light supply system was consisted of units such as light source, power, system measurement and controller. The light source supply was composed of a solar transmitter and an LED lamp. The power supply consisted of an leakage breaker, SMPS, LED controller and relay. The solar transmitter was made of a quartz optical fiber with optimal light transmission. Artificial light used white lamp among LEDs. System measurement and control consisted of touch screen, Zigbee communication module and light quantity sensor. The results of test confirmed that the LED light is automatically activated when the intensity measured by the light intensity sensor is 200 μmolm-2s-1 or less. Moreover, the leaf length, root length, chlorophyll content and root fresh weight of optical fiber treatment was hight than LED lamp treatment. Therefore, it can be inferred that the energy-saving solar light collector device can be effective in the indoor lettuce production. However, the use of LED lamp is also recommended to assure the availability of sufficient sunlight in cloudy and rainy days.

Optical transmitter and receiver are the essential components for optical communication. For these components, butterfly type packages are used which are comprised of metal housing, multilayer ceramic inserts, lead and window. In this study, 2.5 Gbps DFB(Distributed -Feedback) LD(Laser Diode) package was fabricated and characterized. Metal housing showed good thermal conductivity (200W/mK) and well matched TCE(6.7ppm/K) with GaAs chip. Ceramic inserts also showed good VSWR(Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) characteristics(<2.0). By brazing technology, all the elements were combined and sealed. RF characteristics of the package mounted on the PWB was also tested.
We introduce a new visible light communication (VLC) method in which three-level return-to-zero (RZ) modulation is used for flicker-free transmission. In the VLC transmitter, the three-level RZ modulation ensures that the average optical power is constant; thus, a flicker-free light-emitting diode (LED) light is achieved. In the VLC receiver, a resistor-capacitor high-pass filter is used for generating spike signals, which are used for data recovery while eliminating the 120 Hz optical noise from adjacent lighting lamps. In transmission experiments, we applied this method for wireless transmission of an air quality sensor message using the visible light of an LED array. This configuration is useful for the construction of indoor wireless sensor networks for air pollution monitoring using LED lights.
In this paper, we introduce a passive transponder in which an LED is used for both a light transmitter and a receiver, and a solar cell is used for supplying power to the all devices in the transponder. The LED in the transponder operates as a photodetector in the receiving mode, and acts as a light source in the transmitting mode. The current responsivity of the LED detector was measured to be in the order of $10^{-4}A/W$, and the receiving bandwidth with a load resistance of $10k{\Omega}$ was about 10 to 30 kHz. Using the LED for an optical transceiver in a VLID transponder, the detection range was about 70 cm when the transponder was illuminated by the visible light from a $3{\times}3$ LED array in a reader.
