  • In optical imaging systems, such as microscopes, high resolution exposure systems, and optical storage devices, higher optical resolution is a requirement. One of the promising technologies that is able to satisfy this requirement with relatively simple construction and reliable performance are, solid immersion lens (SIL)-based near-field (NF) optical systems. High NA optical systems using annular apertures have been investigated as one solution to achieve higher resolutions and an extended focal depth. By applying an optimized annular aperture to convention SIL optical head resolution can be increased by approximately 20%. This novel SIL-based near-field optics will be verified through experiments such as measuring focused beam spot profiles and observing the topology of a measurement sample. The studied SIL-based near-field optics can be applicable to not only next generation optical storage device but also high resolution microscopy and pattering technologies.

  • There has been studied flow to minimize the spot size to increase data capacity. Optical data storage devices are being developed near practical limits with wavelength and NA of 405nm and 0.85. There has been studied many types of next generation storage devices such as blu-ray multilayer system, probe based data storage and holographic data storage. Among these data storage devices, solid immersion lens(SIL) based near field recording (NFR) has been widely studied. In this system, SIL is the key component that focuses the laser beam with a very small size which enables ultra high data capacity. Therefore, optical performance evaluation system is required for SIL assembly. In this dissertation, a simple and accurate SIL assembly measurement method is proposed with wedge plate lateral shearing interferometer(LSI). Wedge plate LSI is cheaper than commercialized interferometer, robust to the vibration and the moving distance for phase shifting is large that is order of micrometer. We designed the thickness, wedge angle, material, surface quality and wavelength of wedge plate as 1mm, 0.02degree, fused silica, lamda/10(10-5) and 405nm, respectively. Also, we confirmed simulation and experimental results with quantitative analysis. This simple wedge plate LSI can be applied to different types of SIL such as solid immersion mirror(SIM), hemispherical, super-hemispherical and elliptical SIL.

  • We propose a novel application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor pit formation in laser irradiated optical storage materials. A multilayer optical storage recordable compact disk, is composed of multiple layers, each of different structure. Disks were irradiated with aQ-Switched Nd:YAG laser with an energy of 373 mJ. Post-irradiated disks were evaluated by OCT and those images were compared with optical microscopy. Our results indicate that OCT is a useful instrument to investigate pit formation in multilayer optical storage disks and might also provide information to optimize optical memory technology.

  • Information storage devices have been studied to increase the storage capacity and the data transfer rate as well as to decrease the access time and their physical sizes. Optical information storage devices have been achieved high-capacity by reducing optical spot size remarkably due to the development of Blue-ray technology. Optical information storage devices usually use 1.2mm-thick polycarbonate(PC) media to get high enough stiffness. However, it would be better if we can decrease the thickness of a disk for achieving thinner device while keeping the capacity as large as possible. Decreasing the thickness of the storage media makes it difficult to read and write data because it increases the transverse vibration of the rotating disk due to the interaction with surrounding air and the vibration characteristics of thin flexible disk itself, Therefore, a special design based on the fluid mechanics is required to suppress the transverse vibration of the disk in non-contact manner so that the optical pickup can read/write data successfully. In this study, a curved wall is proposed as a stabilizer to suppress the transverse vibration of a $95{\mu}m$-thick PC disk. The characteristics of disk vibration due to a curved wall have been studied through numerical and experimental analysis from the fluid mechanics point of view. The proposed shapes are possible candidates as stabilizers to suppress the transverse vibration of a flexible disk which rotates at high speed.

  • The present state of the design of swing arm actuators for optical disc drives is to obtain the high efficient dynamic characteristics within a very compact volume. As a necessary consequence, the need of the small form factor (SFF) storage device has been arisen as major interests in the information storage technology. In this paper, we suggest the miniaturized swing arm type actuator that has high efficient dynamic characteristics for SFF optical disk drive (ODD). For the operating mechanism, it uses a tracking electromagnetic (EM) circuit for a focusing motion together. Moreover, due to the size constraint, the thermal stability of optical head is important. Therefore, the actuator is designed to emit the heat, which is generated by optical pick-up, along the actuator body easily. Initial model is designed based on the topology optimization method considering the thermal conductivity. Then, the structural parts of the actuator are modified to maintain the high sensitivity and to have wide control bandwidth by the design of experiments method (DOE) and new concept of decreasing mass and inertia. Finally, a swing arm type actuator for SFF ODD is suggested and its dynamic characteristics are verified.

  • The optical storage device has recently experienced significant improvements, especially for the aspects of high capacity and fast transfer rate. However, it is the fact that the optical storage device has the lower access time for the randomly scattered data compared to the hard disk drives. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a new type of optical storage system. In this study, we investigate the air bearing characteristics for the optical disk drives which have the swing arm actuator similarly to the hard disk drives. Considering the requirements of the optical disk drives, we parametrize the shape of the air bearing surface and investigate its sensitivity to the flying characteristics for further optimized design outputs.

  • Super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) technology and solid immersion lens (SIL) based near-field (NF) technology have been expected as promising approaches to increase data capacity or areal density of optical disc. Super-RENS technology has been studied until now using mainly numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85 far-field optical system and possibility of tangential data density increment have been presented. NF technology has been studied with NA over 1 and presented demonstration of removable performance. To achieve much higher density, approach to increase NA of super-RENS by NF technology (Near-Field Super-Resolution, NFSR) can be a candidate and we think this technology would be advantageous compared to wavelength reduction or much higher NA increment of NF technology or much smaller effective optical spot size reduction of far-field super-resolution technology. In this paper we present readout result of ROM media having monotone pits using NF optical system with wavelength of 405nm and NA of 1.84 surface type SIL. GeSbTe material was used for super resolution active layer and pit length is 37.5nm which is shorter than resolution limit 55nm. We present the feasibility of NFSR technology by confirming the CNR threshold according to readout power (Pr) and CNR 33dB over threshold Pr.

  • In this paper, we consider the track-following control problem in the optical data storage systems in the presence of the eccentricity. The eccentricity results in the radial deviation of the objective lens so that it degrades the reliability of the data decoding system. To cope with the eccentricity, an adaptive disturbance compensation technique is newly proposed in the time domain based on a disturbance observer of reduced order, which effectively estimates the low frequency components of the disturbance. The proposed compensator is simply added to the conventional feedback control. The error dynamics of the observer and the sensitivity analysis are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Finally, through experiments in an optical storage system, the feasibility of the proposed approach is verified.

  • Optical disk drives (ODDs) are subjected to vibrations caused by the high-speed rotation of the optical disk, and these vibrations can be excessive and reduce the read/write performance. Elastic rubber mounts with cushioning materials are often used to minimize these problems. In this paper, the source of vibrations was identified by experimental modal tests and high-speed photography. Structural modifications were made based on a lumped parameter model and a finite element model.

  • We describe holographic ROM system to read bit-type data. It has optical system similar to general optical data storage system such as DVD. But because holographic data storage systems have to adopt imaging optical system, in our system bit-type data can be read out by different servos with DVD. We devised 3-hole method similar to 3- beam method for the tracking servo and used astigmatic optical system for the focusing servo. Also we developed the reference beam servo to measure movement of reference beam because especially holographic data storage systems need reference beam. The system was operated by these three servos and objective lens of NA 0.6. We obtained eye pattern from random data of 3T-2um track pitch. We also obtained another eye pattern from DVD disk by only using focusing servo PDIC in our system to verify the compatibility with DVD.
