Hydrometeor type and Drop Size Distribution (DSD) in cloud are the fundamental properties that may help explain the rain formation processes and determine the parameters of radar meteorology. This study presents a preliminary analysis of hydrometeor types and DSD data of cloud measured with a PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity) optical disdrometer at the site of Cloud Physics Observation System (CPOS, $37^{\circ}41^{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}45^{\prime}E$, 843 m from sea level) in Daegwallyeong mountainside of Korea. The method has been validated by comparing the observed rainfall rates with the computed ones from the fitted distribution, using the physical data such as DSD, terminal velocity, and rain intensity which were measured by a Micro-Rain Radar (MRR) and a PARSIVEL optical disdrometer. The analysis period started in three cases: on rainy days with light rain (15.5 mm), moderate rain (76 mm), and heavy rain (121 mm), from March to November 2007, respectively.
Radiative transfer model was used to detect the yellow sand using KOMPSAT-1/0SMI data. With OSMI and SeaWiFS data, spectrum analysis for spatial and channel were carried out to investigate the characteristics of sensor for the detection of yellow sand. It was compared and analyzed the optical depth of OSMI and SeaWiFS data. Spectral characteristics of x-axis is similar in 765 and 865nm according to spectral analysis for OSMI and SeaWiFS data. It is considered that band 7 and 8(765 and 865nm) of OSMI is suitable for detecting the yellow sand. Compared the yellow sand images by OSMI and MODIS, the data of OSMI are applicable to monitor the yellow sand phenomena. The optical depth of yellow sand event was about 0.8 with 1.0 maximum.
Using various satellite measurements in UV, visible and IR, diverse algorithms to retrieve aerosol information have been developed and operated to date. Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard the Himawari 8 weather satellite was launched in 2014 and has 16 channels from visible to Thermal InfRared (TIR) in high temporal and spatial resolution. Using AHI, it is very valuable to retrieve aerosol optical properties over dark surface to demonstrate its capability. To retrieve aerosol optical properties using visible and Near InfRared (NIR) region, surface signal is very important to be removed which can be estimated using minimum reflectivity method. The estimated surface reflectance is then used to retrieve the aerosol optical properties through the inversion process. In this study, we retrieve the aerosol optical properties over dark surface, but not over bright surface such as clouds, desert and so on. Therefore, the bright surface was detected and masked using various infrared channels of AHI and spatial heterogeneity, Brightness Temperature Difference (BTD), etc. The retrieval result shows the correlation coefficient of 0.7 against AERONET, and the within the Expected Error (EE) of 49%. It is accurately retrieved even for low Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). However, AOD tends to be underestimated over the Beijing Hefei area, where the surface reflectance using the minimum reflectance method is overestimated than the actual surface reflectance.

Microplastics have arisen as a worldwide environmental concern, becoming ubiquitous in all marine compartments, and various researches on monitoring marine microplastics are being actively conducted worldwide. Recently, application of a remote detection technology that enables large-scale real-time observation to marine plastic monitoring has been conducted overseas. However, in South Korea, there is little information linking remote detection to marine microplastics and some field studies have demonstrated remote detection of medium- and large-sized marine plastics. This study introduces research cases with remote detection of marine plastics in South Korea and overseas, investigates potential feasibility of using the remote detection technology to marine microplastic monitoring, and suggests some future works to monitor marine microplastics with the remote detection.
Several ocean color algorithms have been developed for GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) using in-situ bio-optical data sets. These data sets collected around the Korean Peninsula between 1998 and 2009 include chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), suspended sediment concentration (SS), absorption coefficient of dissolved organic matter ($a_{dom}$), and remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) obtained from 1348 points. The GOCI Chl-a algorithm was developed using a 4-band remote sensing reflectance ratio that account for the influence of suspended sediment and dissolved organic matter. The GOCI Chl-a algorithm reproduced in-situ chlorophyll concentration better than the other algorithms. In the SeaWiFS images, this algorithm reduced an average error of 46 % in chlorophyll concentration retrieved by standard chlorophyll algorithms of SeaWiFS. For the GOCI SS algorithm, a single band was used (Ahn et al., 2001) instead of a band ratio that is commonly used in chlorophyll algorithms. The GOCI $a_{dom}$ algorithm was derived from the relationship between remote sensing reflectance band ratio ($R_{rs}(412)/R_{rs}(555)$) and $a_{dom}(\lambda)$). The GOCI Chl-a fluorescence and GOCI red tide algorithms were developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2007) and Ahn and Shanmugam (2006), respectively. If the launch of GOCI in June 2010 is successful, then the developed algorithms will be analyzed in the GOCI CAL/VAL processes, and improved by incorporating more data sets of the ocean optical properties data that will be obtained from waters around the Korean Peninsula.
A field survey and Landsat ETM+ image acquisition carried out simultaneously. Using these data, we attempted to establish relationships between tidal flat environmental factors and reflectance observed by ETM+, and to set up a new critical grain size useful for optical remote sensing. Although the grain size of 4 $\Phi$ has been conventionally used as a critical size by sedimentologists, the correlation with optical reflectance was very low. Instead, the grain size of 2 $\Phi$ showed a relatively high correlation coefficient, 0.699, with ETM+ band 4, except near tidal channels in upper tidal flat. We concluded that the grain size of 2 $\Phi$ would be better to use for a critical grain size in Gomso Bay. The grain size also correlated well with moisture content having a correlation coefficient of -0.811 when the 2 $\Phi$ criterion was used. The results of factor analysis showed moisture content was more important parameter than topographic relief, and they were different from German tidal flats in which topographic relief was the prior factor This can be explained by finer grain composition of the Gomso bay tidal flat. In short, moisture content and topography as well as grain size should be considered in tidal flat remote sensing.
The use of satellite remote sensing in maritime safety and security can aid in the detection of illegal fishing activities and provide more efficient use of limited aircraft or patrol craft resources. In the area of vessel traffic monitoring for commercial vessels, Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) which use the ground-based radar system have some difficulties in detecting moving ships due to the limited detection range. A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident such as collision and stranding from happening. Existing VTS has its limit. The virtual vessel traffic control system consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress based on the satellite data, remotely sensed data. And it could be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If environmental stress values are simulated for the ship information derived from satellite data, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. Since optical sensor has a high spatial resolution, JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information. We present an algorithm of automatic identification of ship size and velocity. This paper lastly introduce the field testing results of ship detection by RADARSAT SAR imagery, and propose a new approach for a Vessel Monitoring System(VMS), including VTS, and SAR combination service.

Total Vertical Column Density (VCD) of $NO_2$, a key component in air quality and tropospheric chemistry was measured using a ground-based instrument, Pandora, in Seoul from March 2012 to October 2013. The $NO_2$ measurements using Pandora were compared with those obtained by satellite remote sensing from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) where the intercomparison characteristics were analyzed as a function of measurement geometry, cloud amount and aerosol loading. The negative biases of the OMI $NO_2$ VCD were larger when cloud amount and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) were higher. The correlation coefficient between $NO_2$ VCDs from Pandora and OMI was 0.53 for the entire measurement period, whereas the correlation coefficient between the two was 0.74 when the cloud amount and AOD were low (cloud amount<3, AOD<0.4). The low bias of OMI data was associated with the shielding effect of the cloud and the aerosols.
Microwave remote sensing has great potential, especially in monsoon Asia, since optical observations are often hampered by cloudy conditions. The radar backscattering characteristics of rice crop were investigated with a ground-based automatic scatterometer system. The system was installed inside a shelter in an experimental paddy field at the National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (NIAST) before transplanting. The rice cultivar was a kind of Japonica type, called Chuchung. The scatterometer system consists of X-band antennas, HP8720D vector network analyzer, RF cables, and a personal computer that controls frequency, polarization and data storage. This system automatically measures fully-polarimatric backscattering coefficients of rice crop every 10 minutes, accompanied by a digital camera that takes pictures in a fixed position with the same interval. The backscattering coefficients were calculated by applying a radar equation. Plant variables, such as leaf area index (LAI), biomass, plant height and weather conditions were measured periodically throughout the rice growth season. We have performed polarimetric decomposition of paddy data such as single, double and volume scattering to extract the scattering information effectively. We investigated the relationships between backscattering coefficients and the plant variables.
The Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC predicted that global warming is already happening and it should be caused from the increase of greenhouse gases by the extension of human activities. These global changes will give a serious influence for human society. Global environment can be monitored by the earth observation using satellite. For the observation of global climate change and resolving the global warming process, satellite should be useful equipment and its detecting data contribute to social benefits effectively. JAXA (former NASDA) has made a new plan of the Global Change Observation Mission (GCOM) for monitoring of global environmental change. SGLI (Second Generation GLI) onboard GCOM-C (Climate) satellite, which is one of this mission, provides an optical sensor from Near-DV to TIR. Characteristic specifications of SGLI are as follows; 1) 250 m resolutions over land and area along the shore, 2) Three directional polarization observation (red and NIR), and 3) 500 m resolutions temperature over land and area along shore. These characteristics are useful in many fields of social benefits. For example, multi-angular observation and 250 m high frequency observation give new knowledge in monitoring of land vegetation. It is expected that land products with land aerosol information by polarization observation are improved remarkably. We are studying these possibilities by ground data and satellite data.
