  • Field survey research on damages caused by volcanic activities has plenty of difficulties due to human resources, safety and costs issues. Remote sensing application using satellite image is one of very useful tools to overcome those issues. In this study, we monitored the volcanic activities of Sinabung volcano in 2010, which is located in Sumatra island, Indonesia by using Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images acquired on 17 April, 2009 and 30 July, 2012. We found that the area of pyroclastic flow inundation after 2010 has been tripled roughly, since extracting the pyroclastic flow inundation before and after 2010 eruption from classification. The result from modeling of pyroclastic flow inundation has been compared with the extracted pyroclastic flow inundation from Landsat 7 ETM+ images. As a result, we confirmed that the length of inundation area from the modeling was calculated to 92% accurate, but the width of inundation area was somewhat imprecisely estimated in the volcanic area having the sharp slope and only calculated to 17% accurate.

  • This paper presents a method of controlling the stiffness of a tungsten probe for an atomic force microscope (AFM) in order to provide high-quality phase contrast images in accordance with sample characteristics. While inducing sufficient deformation on sample surfaces with commercial Si or $Si_3N_4$ probes is difficult because of their low stiffness, a tungsten probe fabricated by electrochemical etching with appropriately high stiffness can generate relatively large elastic deformation without damaging sample surfaces. The fabrication of the tungsten probe involves two separate procedures. The first procedure involves immersing a tungsten wire with both ends bent parallel to the surface of an electrolyte and controlling the stiffness of the tungsten cantilever by decreasing its diameter using electrochemical etching in the direction of the central axis. The second procedure involves immersing the end of the etched tungsten cantilever in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the electrolyte and fabricating a tungsten tip with a tip radius of 20-50 nm via the necking phenomenon. The latter etching process applies pulse waves every 0.25 seconds to the manufactured tip to improve its yield. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the stiffness of the tungsten probe as a function of its diameter showed that the stiffness of the tungsten probes greatly varies from 56 N/m to 3501 N/m according to the cantilever diameters from $30{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$, respectively. Thus, the proposed etching method is effective for producing a tungsten probe having specific stiffness for optimal use with an AFM and certain samples.

  • The components and alignment parameters of a flat-field soft x-ray spectrometer used in the wavelength range below 50 $\AA$ are determined, and the characteristics of the spectrometer are analyzed. It consists of a toroidal mirror, a slit, a varied line-spacing concave grating, and a soft x-ray detector. The space-resolved spectral image of a source is formed on a single plane using the tordidal mirror and the 2400-grooves/mm varied line-spacing concave grating. The former is used to compensate for the astigmatism caused by the grazing incidence of soft x-ray light on the concave grating. The spectral and spatial resolutions of the spectrometer are calculated by applying the wave front aberration theory, and the diffraction efficiency is calculated by applying the scalar diffraction theory.

  • The measuring resolution and speed for wavefronts are important to improve the performance of an adaptive optics system. In this paper, we propose a fast measuring algorithm with high resolution in the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor for an adaptive optics system. We designed ground isolated electrical devices whose differential data signals are used to control the deformable mirror and tip/tilt mirror for robust control. The conventional mass centroid algorithm in the Shack-Hartmann sensor to measure wavefront has been widely used and provided good measurement results. In this paper, the proposed fast measuring algorithm for measuring the wavefront combines the conventional mass centroid algorithm with a weighting factor. The weighting factor is a real value estimating the real center of mass in a wavefront spot image. This proposed wavefront measuring algorithm provided fast measurement results with high resolution from experimental tests.

  • An advantage of parallax barrier displays is that they can also display 2D and 3D contents and can be automatically switched between the two types. But, as the viewer changes position, different views of the scene will be directed by the barrier to the visual system. Moving horizontally beyond a certain point will produce "image flipping" of the different views of the scene. These limitations make unavoidable the use of another autostereoscopic display solutions like eye tracking or increasing the number of views. In this paper, a method of the moving parallax barrier design is introduced to supplement a disadvantage of the fixed parallax barrier that provides observation at specific locations. For making the moving parallax barrier, the cross connector with 640 lines FPC is designed. A commercially available web camera is utilized to implement eye-tracking system and shows the experimental result.

  • Recent development in seeker technology explores a new seeker design in which, with larger field-of-view (FOV), optical parts are strapped down to a body (hence, called as a body-fixed seeker or a strapdown seeker). This design has several advantages such as comparatively easier maintenance and calibration by removing complex mechanical moving parts, increasing reliability, and cost savings. On the other hand, the strapdown seeker involves difficulties in implementing guidance laws since it does not directly provide inertial LOS rates. Instead, information for generating guidance commands should be extracted by estimating missile/target relative motion utilizing target images on the image plane of a strapdown seeker. In this research, a new framework based on an unscented Kalman filter is developed for estimating missile/target relative motion on the simplified assumption of a point source target. Performance of a terminal guidance algorithm, in which guidance command is generated based on the estimated relative motion, is demonstrated by a missile/target engagement simulation.

  • Ferroelectric $PbTiO_3$ thin film is deposited with rf sputtering at substrate temperature of $100-150^{\circ}C$. It is found that this has pyrochlore structure of amorphous type by X-ray diffractive analysis. Thermal annealing has excellent characteristics at $550^{\circ}C$ and laser annealing has best crystalline structure in case of scanning with 50 watts. Interface states in MFST and MFOST structure with a $PbTiO_3$ ferroelectric thin film gate have been investigated from analysis of C-V data. The interface states density has been drastically reduced by inserting an oxide layer between ferroelectric and semiconductor. The observed effect increase feasibility of employing ferroelectric thin films such as nonvolatile memory field effect transistor, IR optical FET, and Image Devices with a ferroelectric layer.

  • The development of the computer widens the expressive ways for the nature objects and the scenes. The cutting edge computer graphics technologies effectively create any images we can imagine. Although the computer graphics plays an important role in filming and video production, the status of the domestic contents production industry is not favorable for producing and research all at the same time. In digital composition, the match moving stage, which composites the captured real sequence with computer graphics image, goes through many complicating processes. The camera tracking process is the most important issue in this stage. This comprises the estimation of the 3D trajectory and the optical parameter of the real camera. Because the estimating process is based only on the captured sequence, there are many errors which make the process more difficult. In this paper we propose the method for correcting the tracking data. The proposed method can alleviate the unwanted camera shaking and object bouncing effect in the composited scene.

  • A computer simulation about removal of the 0-th order diffraction is achieved by using numerical reconstruction in digital holography and the Fourier transform method. A light intensity distribution hologram is generated through numerical calculation of the interference pattern. Additionally a phase hologram without the 0-th order diffraction is generated. The removal function for elimination of the 0-the order diffraction is introduced and the numerical reconstructions with several conditions for the removal of the 0-th order diffraction and the production of high quality numerically reconstructed images are tested and compared. The removal function is proven to be more effective at the suppression of the 0-th order diffraction compared with the DC suppression method.

  • PURPOSE. This study was performed to define attachment and growth behavior of osteoblast-like cells and evaluate the gene expression on zirconia compared to titanium. MATERIALS AND METHODS. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on (1) titanium and (2) zirconia discs. The tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (MTT test) was used for examining the attachment of cells. Cellular morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was measured to evaluate the cell differentiation rate. Mann-Whitney test was used to assess the significance level of the differences between the experimental groups. cDNA microarray was used for comparing the 20215 gene expressions on titanium and zirconia. RESULTS. From the MTT assay, there was no significant difference between titanium and zirconia (P>.05). From the SEM image, after 4 hours of culture, cells on both discs were triangular or elongated in shape with formation of filopodia. After 24 hours of culture, cells on both discs were more flattened and well spread compared to 4 hours of culture. From the ALP activity assay, the optical density of E1 cells on titanium was slightly higher than that of E1 cells on zirconia but there was no significant difference (P>.05). Most of the genes related to cell adhesion showed similar expression level between titanium and zirconia. CONCLUSION. Zirconia showed comparable biological responses of osteoblast-like cells to titanium for a short time during cell culture period. Most of the genes related to cell adhesion and signal showed similar expression level between titanium and zirconia.
