  • This paper presents a robust tracking controller design method for the track-following system of an optical recording device. A tracking loop gain adjustment algorithm is introduced to accurately estimate the tracking vibration quantity in spite of the uncertainties of the tracking actuator. A minimum tracking open-loop gain is calculated by the estimated tracking vibration quantity and a tolerable limit of tracking error. A robust tracking controller is designed by considering a robust $H_\infty$ control problem with the weighting function of a slightly larger gain than the minimum tracking open-loop gain. The proposed controller design method is applied to the track-following system of an optical recording device and is evaluated through the experimental result.

  • In a SCH(separate confinement heterostructure) QW(quantum well) laser, we calculated the optical gain, the differential gain and recombination current in the QW and derived the bulk carrier density in the SCH region as a function of the QW current by using the analytical capture escape model. Based upon above relations, we found the optical gain and the differential gain correspond to the ratios of carrier and current injected into the QW.

  • We propose a new technique to minimize gain-transient time of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) in channel add/drop networks. We have dramatically reduced the gain-transient time to less than $3{\mu}sec$ by applying, for the first time to our knowledge, a disturbance observer with a proportional/integral/differential (PID) controller to the control of EDFA gain. The $3{\mu}sec$ gain-transient time is the fastest one ever reported and it is approximately less than 1.5% of $200{\mu}sec$ gain-transient time of commercially available EDFAs for WDM networks. We have demonstrated the superiority of the new technique by performing the simulation with a numerical modeling software package such as the $Optsim^{TM}$.

  • In this paper, we provide a robust track-following controller design method for the stable coarse seek control. Due to the inaccurate velocity control during a coarse seek, the shake of fine actuator is generated and thus a gain-up track-following control is required to complete stably the coarse seek. To this end, a loop gain adjustment algorithm is introduced to estimate accurately the shake of fine actuator. A weighting function can be properly selected from a minimum tracking gain-up open-loop gain, calculated from the estimated shake quantity of fine actuator. A robust tracking gain-up controller is designed by considering a robust $H_{\infty}$ control problem using the weighting function. The proposed design method is applied to the coarse seek control system of an optical rewritable drive and is evaluated through the experimental results.

  • To compensate the nonlinearity of electroabsorption modulator(EAM) resulting from its near exponential transfer function, a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA) that has a log transfer function is used. Since the transfer function of SOA is inverse to that of EAM, the intermodulation distortion(IMD) of EAM can be reduced by cascading SOA to EAM. Also, the RF gain can be increased by the optical gain of SOA. For these reasons, spurious free dynamic range(SFDR) of EAM is enhanced by connecting SOA to EAM in series and operating in gain salutation region. To improve the nonlinearity compensation of EAM, the increased gain of SOA is required and the slope of gain saturation, the ratio of gain to input SOA power, needs to be steep. However, signal spontaneous beat noise that is the dominant system noise increases in proportion to the gain such that the SFDR of EAM is reduced. The higher the gain of SOA is, the more ASE is increased. Thus the noise level of system is increased and the following SFDR of EAM is decreased. The slope of gain saturation region and ASE of have trade-off relation and the optimization is achieved at 8㏈ optical gain. 9㏈ enhancement of SFDR of EAM is obtained. This scheme is easy to embody the linear EAM and the integration with three components (DFB-LD, EAM and SOA) offers many merits, such as low insertion loss, low chirping and low polarization sensitivity.

  • One of the core technology in WDM-PON system is a generation and modulation technique of the optical source in Optical Network Unit (ONU). In this paper, we propose a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) as a modulator in WDM-PON system. Its performance is analyzed by simulation and actual experimentation. Using RSOA in WDM-PON system as a modulator, it obtains higher gain compared to the conventional SOA due to the double pass gain effect. Furthermore RSOA can provide high gain with comparatively low input power. This is very helpful when we set up the actually system because using lower input power, it can reduce the load of the driving circuit which makes very economical module structure. Therefore, when RSOA is used as a modulator, not only it gives noise suppression effect, but also provides certain amount of gain as well. In addition, comparing with conventional SOA which gives fairly large insertion loss, RSOA can provides more important merits.

  • In this paper, the scheme of a single module for simultaneous operation of all-optical computing circuits, namely half adder and half subtractor, are realized using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based logic gates. Optical XOR gate by employing a SOA based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) configuration is used to get the sum and difference outputs. A carry signal is generated using a SOA-four wave mixing (FWM) based AND gate, whereas, the borrow is generated by employing the SOA-cross gain modulation (XGM) effect. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of our configuration by proving the good level of quality factor i.e. ~5.5, 9.95 and 12.51 for sum/difference, carry and borrow, respectively at 0 dBm of input power.

  • The luminance properties of FFL(Flat Fluorescent Lamp) backlights have been investigated in detail for the first time. The on-axis luminance gain as well as viewing-angle characteristics on various combinations of optical films were obtained from FFL backlight and compared to the results of conventional CCFL(cold-cathode fluorescent lamps) backlights. It was found that the on-axis luminance gains achieved by using optical films in the FFL backlight were lower than those in the CCFL backlight indicating that the recycling processes occurring between optical films and light sources/reflection sheet are not so effective in the FFL backlight due to the much larger area of, and thus higher absorption probability of the FFL. This result suggests that new optical films should be developed for FFL backlight and other flat-lamp backlight technologies.

  • Recently, polymethyl methacrylate based plastic optical fibers (POFs) have attracted considerable attention as a potential medium for local area network (LAN) and home network applications. Since the POFs have very low optical loss at around 650mm, in particular, it becomes quite important to develop GHz transmitters operating at this wavelength for high bit rate optical transmission applications of the POFs. In this paper, we present generation of ${\geq}1.5 Gbps$ pseudo-random binary sequence optical signals by using a gain switched InGaA1P Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser with a high frequency filter, operating at 650mm, and the application of these signals to bandwidth measurement of POFs.
