Various etching methods of optical fiber and formation of metal nano particles on the optical fiber have been proposed for fabrication of fiber optic localized surface plasmon resonance (FO LSPR) biosensors. Different types of etched optical fiber are possible by removing the cladding of optical fiber using HF (hydrofluoric acid) solution and BHF (buffered hydrofluoric acid) solution, which results in improved surface roughness when BHF solution is used. Localized surface plasmon can be formed and measured by formation of silver and gold nano particles on the etched optical fiber. The characteristics of the etched optical fiber and metal nano particles on the etched surface of the optical fiber play a key role in dictating the sensitivity of the LSPR sensors, so that the proposed results can be expected to be applied for related research on fiber optic based biosensors.
In this study, we have fabricated an infrared optical fiber based sensor which can monitor the respiration of a patient. The design of a chalcogenide optical fiber based sensor is suitable for insertion into a high electro-magnetic field environment because the sensor consists of low cost and compact mid-infrared components such as an infrared light source, a chalcogenide optical fiber and a thermopile sensor. A fiber-optic respiration sensor is capable of detecting carbon dioxide ($CO_{2}$) in exhalation of a patient using the infrared absorption characteristics of carbon gases. The modulated infrared radiation due to the presence of carbon dioxide is guided to the thermopile sensor via a chalcogenide receiving fiber. It is expected that a mid-infrared fiber-optic respiration sensor which can be developed based on the results of this study would be highly suitable for respiration measurements of a patient during the procedure of an MRI.

Light losses in optical fibers are investigated by a fiber optic OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor system to develop fiber optic probes for structural displacement measurement. The displacement sensitivity was determined by the measurements of fiber-bending loss according to the gage length changes of the displacement sensor. The fiber optic displacement probe was manufactured to verify the feasibility of the structural displacement measurement.

A single body type of fiber-optic current and voltae sensor using a rare earth doped YIG and a bismuth silicon oxide single crystsl is proposed, which is used for simultaneous measurement of the AC electric current and AC electric voltage over the trasmission lines. Experimental results showed that the fiber-optic current sensor has the maximum 7.5% error within the current range of 0A to 400A, and the fiber-optic voltage sensor has the maximum 0.87% error within the current range of 0V to 400V. The output waveforms of proposed fiber-optic sensor system has a good agreement with output waveforms of conductor current and voltage. Experimental results proved that the output of fiber-optic current sensor is not affected by the electric voltage applied to the fiber-optic voltage sensor, and also, that the output of fiber-optic voltage sensor is not affected by the electric current applied to the fiber-optic current sensor.

The intensity modulated type (reflective method) optical fiber sensor is a well -known method and widely applied to the displacement measurements and other industrial purposes. This type sensor has the advantages of relatively cheap cost, small sensor size and easiness of operation. The sensitivity of the sensor is very dependent of several error terms; the variation in the intensity of the light source and the changes in the surface reflectivity of the object. An optical fiber coupled displacement probe with a new compensation method is presented in this paper. The proposed displacement sensor can measure the displacements of the target surface independent of surface reflectivity error that is caused by the materials and surface processing grade.
Novel concept of sensor mat and its signal processing method is proposed for patient monitoring in medical application. Proposed sensor mat structure has sensing inner layer which has cross-linked arrangement using plastic optical fiber(POF). Large core diameter of plastic optical fiber behaved as band pass filter by averaging the noise component. caused by unwanted environmental factors. Signal processor followed by sensor output added noise immune performance by filtering out unwanted component. Fail-proof patient breath monitoring scheme was realized by using intelligent decision algorithm. Unlike the conventional approach by using mechanical sensor, which have high sensitivity both to intruder and to environmental noise, our approach provided reliable breath motion detection.
In this paper, a study on a portable hydrogen alarm system based on the palladium coated single mode fiber sensor has been reported. The fabricated hydrogen sensor exhibited 0.14 dB, 0.41 dB and 0.54 dB optical intensity variation when it was exposed by the nitrogen and hydrogen mixed gas containing 0.5 %, 1 % and 4 % of the hydrogen concentration, respectively. The fabricated sensor exhibited 20 second of response time and 120 second of recovery time for 4 % hydrogen containing gas. The fiber optics layout and software algorithm for detection of hydrogen leakage have been presented. The implanted portable hydrogen alarm system successfully generated an alarm signal when a 4 % hydrogen containing gas was leaked out.

In this study, fatigue behavior of the optical fiber sensor embedded in composite laminate was investigated. Static tensile and fatigue tests were performed for three types of laminated composite specimens with embedded optical fiber sensor in the neutral plane ; [0/sub 6//OF/0/sub 6/]/sub T/, [0/sub 2//90/sub 4//OF/90/sub 4//0/sub 2/]/sub T/ and [0/sub 3//90/sub 3//OF/90/sub 3//0/sub 3/]/sub T/. The fracture of the embedded optical fiber sensor was detected by the intensity drop off of laser signal transmitted through the optical fiber sensors embedded within laminated composite specimen. The maximum fatigue stress applied to laminated specimen was compared with the average tensile stress at which the fracture of the embedded optical fiber within the laminate occurred under static tensile loading. From the experiments, firstly it is observed that the decrease in the life of optical fiber sensors embedded within unidirectional-ply laminate by the fatigue loading is relatively small compared to that of cross-ply laminate. Secondly, the optical fiber embedded in unidirectional-ply laminate is fractured by the fatigue damage due to the growth of internal defects of optical fiber, however the optical fiber embedded in cross-ply laminate is fractured by the growth of transverse matrix crack.
This paper demonstrated the performance of a palladium wire hydrogen sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating as a means of developing a quasi-distributed hydrogen sensor network capable of operating at cryogenic temperatures. The new approach employing a fiber Bragg grating based palladium hydrogen sensor described in this study is advantageous over other traditional hydrogen sensors because of the multiplexing capability of fiber Bragg gratings. The sensitivity of the hydrogen sensor at room temperature is approximately 2.5 times that of the hydrogen sensor at cryogenic temperatures.
Optical fiber sensors have been used to detect small amounts of chemical species. In this work, a new thin polymer-clad fiber sensor is developed. Polyaniline is chemically synthesized and thin clad layers of the polymer are easily deposited on optical fiber by dip-coating technique. The optical property of polyaniline as a sensing material is analyzed by UV-Vis-NIR. The light source is stabilized He-Ne laser at 635 nm wavelength with 1 mW power. The light power transmitted through the optical fiber is measured with a spectrophotometer. By selecting a fixed incident angle, variation of transmitted light intensity through the optical fiber can be detected as gas molecules absorbed in the polyaniline clad layer. Among the various gases, the fabricated optical fiber sensor shows good sensitivity to $NH_{3}$ gas. The optical fiber sensors was shown more improved properties than polymer based sensors which measure conductivity changes.
