  • We experimentally measured the cold cavity loss of a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser in situ by using the relaxation oscillation frequency method. The relaxation oscillation frequency is measured for various pumping powers and the data is fitted by the least squares method with a theoretical curve of parameters including the cavity loss. We obtained a cavity loss of 15.3$\pm$0.5 dB which was found to agree with the results of direct transmission loss measurements.

  • A wavelength tunable all-optical clock recovery using a semiconductor optical amplifier in a fiber ring cavity is proposed and demonstrated at the wavelength of 1530 nm to 1570 nm. A synchronized optical pulse train is recovered from 10 Gbps and 30 Gbps randomly generated optical pulse streams with injection locking technique. Also, the system responses to the perturbation and the input average power variation are analyzed by a large-signal model based on time-domain travelling wave equation. ation.

  • Sagnac interferometer gyroscopes can be divided into three large generations using starting points of time or highlights of their research. As the first generational Sagnac interferometer, the ring laser gyroscopes have been studied since the 1960s by laser invention, and as the second generational Sagnac interferometer, the fiber optic gyroscopes have been studied since the 1970s by invention of optical fiber for communication. In the latter half of the 1990s, after having confirmed the wave theory of the atom, studies of atomic interferometers were started for a next generation gyroscope application. This paper discusses the operation principles, application, and future prospects of these three generations of Sagnac gyroscopes.

  • We have experimentally demonstrated a Direct Optical Switching (DOS) CDMA for future wide-band mobile communication systems at the 40 ㎓ band by using orthogonal (crosscorrelation $\leq$2) unipolar type codes with code length of 16 and chip rate of 2.5 Gcps for radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Pulse-amplitude-equalized 40 ㎓ laser pulses were provided by rational-harmonically mode-locking a 10 ㎓ fiber ring laser.

  • Figure '8' type, passively-mode-locked erbium-doped-fiber ring laser was developed, incorporating a nonlinear loop mirror. Transmittance of the loop mirror was found to be dependent on the incident light intensity due to the non-reciprocal nonlinear phase shift, which enables the passive mode locking of the laser. Self-starting of stable mode locking was possible with only controlling the polarization controllers inside the cavity without any help of external perturbation or modulation. The mode-locked output pulse shape was discussed in relation with the transmission characteristics of nonlinear loop mirror.

  • We report 400 femto-second highly stable, nearly transform-limited, pulse generation at 10 GHz in $1540{\sim}1550$ nm wavelength region by adiabatic soliton pulse compression of an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser output. Without using any supermode selection device, supermode beating noise has been suppressed below -123 dB/Hz, resulting less than 100 femto-second timing jitters at the noise band of $1\;kHz{\sim}100\;MHz$.

  • Rational harmonic mode-locking of an Er-doped fiber ring laser has been successfully demonstrated up to the 16-th harmonic, of the RF frequency applied to the electro-optic modulator. This is the highest harmonic reported so far to our knowledge.

  • We have demonstrated the wavelength tunable ultrashort pulse fiber ring laser proposed the novel method for measuring the cavity loss from relaxation oscillation frequency and the pump power. To suppress the polarization instability the laser cavity is configured with polarization maintaining fibers and to control the center wavelength a 2.4 nm bandwidth tunable wavelength filter was inserted in the cavity. The laser has 8 picosecond pulse width, 10 GHz repetition rate and 1.2 mW average power in 1530-1560 nm operation range.
