This paper presents a small loading and positioning device using VCM (voice coil motor). The developed device consists of a VCM-based linear actuating system, a capacitance displacement sensor and a cantilever deflection sensing system. The trust force of the VCM proportional to applied current moves the column supported on two pairs of parallel leaf springs. The infinitesimal displacement of moved column is detected by capacitance displacement sensor with a resolution of 0.1nm and a repeatability of 1nm. Also, a micro cantilever with known stiffness (200N/m), which is mounted on the end of the column, is used as a force sensor to detect the load applied to a specimen. After the cantilever contacts with the specimen, the deflection of cantilever and the load applied to the specimen are measured by using an optical lever system which consists of a diode laser, a mirror and a PSD (position sensitive detector). In this paper, an experimental system was constructed and its actuator and sensing parts were tested and calibrated. Also, the constructed system was applied to the indentation experiment and the load-displacement curve of aluminum was obtained. Experimental results showed that the developed device can be applied for performing nano indentation.

Large and complex structures are being built now-a-days and, they are required to be functional even under extreme loading and environmental conditions. In order to meet the safety and maintenance demands, there is a need to build sensors integrated structural system, which can sense and provide necessary information about the structural response to complex loading and environment. Sophisticated tools have been developed for the design and construction of civil engineering structures. However, very little has been accomplished in the area of monitoring and rehabilitation. The employment of appropriate sensor is therefore crucial, and efforts must be directed towards non-destructive testing techniques that remain functional throughout the life of the structure. Fiber optic sensors are emerging as a superior non-destructive tool for evaluating the health of civil engineering structures. Flexibility, small in size and corrosion resistance of optical fibers allow them to be directly embedded in concrete structures. The inherent advantages of fiber optic sensors over conventional sensors include high resolution, ability to work in difficult environment, immunity from electromagnetic interference, large band width of signal, low noise and high sensitivity. This paper brings out the potential and current status of technology of fiber optic sensors for civil engineering applications. The importance of employing fiber optic sensors for health monitoring of civil engineering structures has been highlighted. Details of laboratory studies carried out on fiber optic strain sensors to assess their suitability for civil engineering applications are also covered.

We explored a method to evaluate imaging performance for the optimal assembly of an endoscopic miniature lens and a sensor constituting an imaging module at the distal end of gastrointestinal endoscopy. For the assembly of the imaging module, the image sensor was precisely located at the focal plane when collimated light passed through the endoscopic lens. As another method, the distance between the lens and sensor was adjusted to obtain the highest focus index from images measured the star chart of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard at various positions. We analyzed the slanted-edge modulation transfer function (MTF), corresponding depth of field, and number of line pairs for MTF 50% and 20% at each working distance within the range of 5-100 mm for imaging modules assembled in different ways. Assembly conditions of the imaging module with better MTF performance were defined for each working distance range of 5-30 mm and 30-100 mm, respectively. In addition to the MTF performance, the focus index of each assembled module was also compared. In summary, we examined the performance of imaging modules assembled with different methods within the suggested working distance and tried to establish the optimal assembly protocol.

There is increasing interest in the rapid and highly sensitive monitoring of cell viability in biological and toxicological research. Conventional methods depend on optical assays using Water Soluble Tetrazolium-8 (WST-8) or 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, which requires a large volume of samples and special instruments, necessitating shipment of clinical samples to laboratories. This paper reports on the development of a rapid and sensitive electrochemical (EC) sensor using screen printed electrode (SPE) and surface modification using 4'-mercapto-N-phenylquinone diamine (4'-NPQD), as double electron mediators, for monitoring cell viability via the measurement of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). We used the sensor to observe the viability of MCF-7 and doxorubicin (Dox)-treated cells. The oxidation current of NADH was measured via chronoamperometry (CA), and the EC results showed a good linear relationship when compared with NADH quantification using WST-8 assay. The analysis time was only 10 s and limit of detection (LOD) of NADH was 1.78 µM. Our EC method has the potential to replace conventional WST assays for cell viability and cytotoxicity experiments.
In this work, we performed an optical simulation study on the performance of a PMDPP3T:PCBM based on an organic photovoltaic (PV) device. The virtual PV device was developed in Lumerical, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solutions. Different layers of the PV cell have been defined through the incorporation of complex refractive index value of those layers' constituent materials. During the simulation study, the effect of the variation active layer thickness on an ideal short circuit current density ($J_{sc,ideal}$) of the PV cell has been, first, observed. Thereafter, we have investigated the impact of surface roughness of a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) electrode on $J_{sc,ideal}$ of the PV cells. From this simulation, it has been observed that the $J_{sc,ideal}$ value of the PV cell is strongly dependent on the thickness of its active layer and the photon absorption of the PV cell has gradually decreased with the increment of the TCO's surface roughness. As a result, the capability of the PV device has been reduced with the increment of the surface roughness of the TCO.

In brushless DC motor, current flow should be controlled such that only properly selected 2 out of 3 phases carry current depending on the position of rotor. In order to detect position of rotor, hole sensor, encoder, optical position-detecting sensor, and magnetic position-detecting sensor are frequently employed. These sensors not only often cause malfunction in low and high temperature but they also have disadvantage of increasing cost and size of an motor system. To reduce the cost and size and to increase the robustness of the motor system, recently researches on sensorless motor dirve are very active. This paper proposes a novel unipolar PWM switching method that can improve the control problem caused by the difficulty of detecting zero crossing point at high revolution speed by minimizing the switching noise while increasing the lifespan of the drive system.
In our experiments, strain-free nanowires(NWs) were dispersed on to the substrate, followed by e-beam lithography(EBL) to fabricate single nanowire ultraviolet(UV) sensor devices. Focused-ion beam(FIB), micro-Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence were employed to characterize the structural and optical properties of AlGaN/GaN NWs. Also, I-V characteristics were obtained under both dark condition and UV lamp to demonstrate AlGaN/GaN NW-based UV sensors. The conductance of a single AlGaN/GaN UV sensor was 9.0 ${\mu}S$(under dark condition) and 9.5 ${\mu}S$ (under UV lamp), respectively. The currents were enhanced by excess carriers under UV lamp. Fast saturation and decay time were demonstrated by the cycled processes between UV lamp and dark condition. Therefore, we believe that AlGaN/GaN NWs have a great potential for UV sensor applications.

Contact-type linear image sensors for facsimile have been fabricated by means of rf glow discharge decomposition method of silane. The dependence of their electrical and optical properties on rf power, $SiH_4$ flow rate, ambient gas pressure, $H_2SiH_4$ ratio and substrate temperature are described. The a-Si:H monolayer demonstriated photosensitivity of 0.85 and $I_{ph}/I_d$ ratio of 100 unger 100 lux illumination. However, this monolayer has relatively high dark current due to carrier injection from both electrodes, resulting in low $I_{ph}/I_{dd}$ ratio. To suppress the dark current we have fabricated $SiO_2/i-a-Si:H/p-a-Si:H:B$ multilayer film with blocking structure. The photocurrent of this multilayer sensor with 6 V bias became saturated ar about 20nA under 10 lux illumination, while the dark current was less than 0.2 nA. Moreover, the spectral sensitivity of the multilayer film was enhanced for short wavelength visible region, compared with that of the a-Si:H monolayer. These results show that the fabricated photocon-ductive film can be used as the linear image sensor of the facsimile.
The optical biosensor using the electrically controlled release of reactive reagent is developed for the detection of peroxide. Rapid degradation of polymer complex of PEOx and PMAA occurs as the applied current increases and thus released amount of HPA increases. The degradation velocity of polymer and the amount of HPA released are linearly proportional to the applied current. Peroxide is reacted with the released reagent by peroxidase and then the product, a fluorescent dimer DBDA, is formed. The monochromic light from light source (150W Xe arc ramp) excites the DBDA and the excited light is transmitted through an optical fiber to be detected by a photodiode array. The change of fluorescence intensity is related to the change of peroxide concentration. The peroxidase is entrapped in Ca-alginate get on the inner surface. The biosensor has the linear signal range of 0.025mM-10.mM peroxide. By applying the step function of peroxide, reproducibility of biosensor has been investigated. The mathematical model is constructed by the combination of enzyme kinetics with reactor flow model. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental result and model prediction in the sensor signal.
Purpose: This study was to design wide angle mobile camera corrected optical distortion for peripheral area, which were reduced optical distortion and TV distortion by using 4 aspherical lenses. Methods: The optical design was satisfied with ${\pm}1%$ optical distortion in viewing angle of $95^{\circ}$ and total length of optical system was less than 4.5 mm which was considering a thickness of mobile camera. 1/3.2 inch (5M) CCD sensor was used in the optical system and set design condition to satisfy MTF which was over than 20% in 140 lp/mm. Results: Optimized wide angle mobile camera showed ${\pm}1%$ optical distortion in full field of $95^{\circ}$ viewing angle and TV distortion was 0.46% so that distortion of peripheral area was reduce. MTF showed over than 20% in every field. Ray aberration and astigmatism were small amount so that it showed stable performance. Conclusions: Obtain wider and clearer view which is reduced image distortion of surrounding area via optical method in wide angle mobile camera which has wider view angle than current mobile camera. And it was able to fix a demerit when it occurred via software correction. It is able to apply to study of camera which is related to spectacles.
