  • Shells and operculums of eight species of Bithyniidae, Bithynia leachi, B. tentaculata, B. siamensis, B. misella, B. kiusiuensis, Gabbia australis, B. manchourica and a Bithynia sp. collected from Nepal, were observed, There is no morphological difference between korean populations of B. misella and a Japanese popualtion of B. kiusiuensis. And the shells of these species were simialr to the other Bithynia species rather than Australian Gabbia. The coordinate of the starting point of nuclear spire of operculum(SPN)was species specific and this value had very limited range within a species. The result suggested that Korean and Japanese populations of B. misella and B. kiusiuensis are synonym and the coordinate of SPN will be a useful character in sytematics of operculated snails.

  • This study evaluated the external form of Rhodeus notatus TSV (transparent-scaled variant) type identified in Korea for the first time and compared it with that of the normal type. The TSV units newly found on Rhodeus notatus are iii10 of dorsal fin and anal fin iii10, which are similar to that in the normal type, considering the observing coefficient of each part's fins. The external form is, transparent enough to see the red gill filament in the operculum, the spiral digestive organ is observed opaquely, and numerous melanophores are stained at the upper part of abdomen. The coloration and scales are different between TSV type and normal type; however, there is no difference in the external form and meristic character.

  • The objective of this investigation was to examine oxygen consumption (OC) and operculum movement number (OMN) of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss as a function of changes in water temperature (WT). The WT of the rearing facility was increased from $4^{\circ}C$ to $28^{\circ}C$ stepwise at $1^{\circ}C$ day at each WT (5, 10, 15, 17, 20, 23, 26, and $28^{\circ}C$) then OC and OMN were measured. The OC of the fish increased linearly with WT: O=25.0240 WT+17.5400 in the range of $4{\sim}23^{\circ}C$ However, at 26 and $28^{\circ}C$ the OC declined to around the level at $10^{\circ}C$. The OMN also increased linearly with temperature: OMN=4.4847 WT+59.2150 in the range of $4{\sim}23^{\circ}C$ but at 26 and $28^{\circ}C$ the OMN of the fish dropped slightly. The OC and OMN of the fish showed peak at $23^{\circ}C$ with the lowest values at $4^{\circ}C$. In the range of $4{\sim}23^{\circ}C$, the relationship between OC and OMN of the fish was expressed as a linear equation: OC=0.0923 OMN-308.2100. The OC of fish transferred from $15^{\circ}C$ to certain temperatures without acclimation showed a lower OC at 5 and $10^{\circ}C$ but above $15^{\circ}C$ the OC increased/decreased with temperature. The trout died in temperatures above $28^{\circ}C$ even when acclimated step by step with a $1^{\circ}C$ day increase in WT. In this experiment, a negative physiological changs occurred in the experimental fish at $23^{\circ}C$ suggesting that the optimal physiological temperature range of rainbow trout is $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was conducted to determine the stress response [ethological (operculum movement number (OMN)), hematological (hematocrit and hemoglobin), biochemical (glucose, cortisol and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT))] in red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara during exposure of different water temperature in winter season. This species (Total length, $18.56{\pm}0.34cm$) previously maintained in water temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ were transferred to 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$. During experimental period (7 days), OMN, hematocrit (Ht), glucose and GOT values were significantly high in $15^{\circ}C$ when compared to 20 and $25^{\circ}C$. Hemoglobin value was also increased at $15^{\circ}C$, but no significant differences. There was no differences in cortisol levels among the temperature groups. No fish mortality was observed during the experimental period. From these results, $15^{\circ}C$ is likely more stressful to red spotted grouper than $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. These observations confirm that red spotted grouper adapts better to temperatures between 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ during the winter season.

  • A single juvenile pomacentrid specimen (5.9 mm standard length) was collected from the Korea Strait in October 2010. The specimen is characterized by punctate-stellate melanophores scattered on the operculum and dorso-ventral region in front of the caudal peduncle, the lack of melanophores on the posterior end of the anal fin base, the presence of 14 spines and 14 soft rays on the dorsal fin, and the presence of 2 spines and 12 soft rays on the anal fin. A molecular analysis based on mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences showed that this specimen is closely related to adult Chromis mirationis (d = 0.002), but that it differs from Chromis notata (d = 0.017). Juvenile C. mirationis differ from juvenile C. notata in having no melanophores on the posterior end of the anal fin base. We propose a new Korean name, "tti-ja-ri-dom" for C. mirationis.

  • Material of a Bryocamptus species, formerly reported as B. umiatensis Wilson, 1958 from Sakhalin and South Korea, is here recognized as a distinct new species. Specimens of both sexes were recently obtained from an alpine wetland, Sumeunmulbaengdui, located in the Hallasan National Park, Korea, and newly registered as a Ramsar Wetland in 2015. The new species, B. jejuensis n. sp., differs from the type population of B. umiatensis from Alaska by the smooth margin of the anal operculum in both sexes, the peculiarly modified terminal seta on the distal endopodal segment of the male leg 3, the sword-like spinous seta on the distal endopodal segment of the male leg 4, and the presence of a setule row on the inner distal margin of the caudal rami in the female. Both sexes of the new species are described in detail with particular reference to the male characters. A revised key to the seven species of the genus Bryocamptus Chappuis, 1929 occurring in Korean waters is provided.

  • A single specimen of Synodus fuscus belonging to the genus Synodus in family Synodontidae was firstly collected from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. We newly add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, "Mo-rae-kkot-dong-myeol". This species was characterized by having no conspicuous pigmented area on operculum. The dorsal fin base is shorter than 1/2 of the head length. The morphological measurements and counts of Synodus fuscus were described in detail and a key to species of the genus Synodus from Korea provided in this study.
