  • It is essential that weapons which are mounted on aircraft need to prove its reliability and safety during its developments. A guided missile should have high reliability and safety throughout various tests which are including ground tests, captive flight tests, detailed technical tests and operational tests. In these various tests, it is vital that software of each component in the guided missile should be easily updated in order to correct algorithms or errors. In this paper, we propose a software update technique based on MDTP(mass data transfer protocol) which are defined in MIL-STD-1760. The proposed techniques have the following advantages: First, software of each unit in a weapon can be updated through a test equipment without disassemble a guided missile. Second, development periods for a software update can be reduced by reusing MDTP. Third, we can easily maintenance of the software because it is based on standard. We proved its efficiency and validity through experiments. Therefore, the proposed technique should be effectively utilized for software update of a weapon mounted on an aircraft during development processes.

  • Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is an power device of a novel concept. While SFCLs generate no ohmic loss during the operation carrying normal currents, they can limit fault currents very fast making large impedance by their quench characteristics. In 2006, KEPCO has developed a distribution class hybrid type SFCL by a collaborative research project with LS industrial systems. The SFCL has merits in practical and economical points of view. In the SFCL, the superconductor just plays a role of a fault detector and the current limiting is completed by the other current limiting element made of normal metals throu호 the line commutation. As a result, the required amounts of superconductors can be reduced considerably. Consequently, the hybrid SFCL can be fabricated with small size and cost, maintaining perfect current limiting performance. Currently, KEPCO is carrying out a research project at Gochang power test center for the purpose of the verification test of the 22.9 kV/ 630 A class SFCL for the practical application in real grid. Through the project, a long term operational test and fault current test will be done. In this paper, the back ground of development and installation of the SFCL will be explained and the operation plan of the SFCL for the verification test is also introduced.

  • In modern warfare, securing communication channel by combatting opponents' electromagnetic attack is a crucial factor to win the war. Military satellite digital transponder is a communication payload of the next generation military satellite that maintains warfare networks operational in the presence of interfering signals by securely relaying signals between ground terminals. The transponder in this paper is classified as a partial processing transponder which performs cost effective secure relaying in satellite communication links. The control functions of transmission security achieve immunity to hostile interferences which may cause malicious effects on the link. In this paper, we present an efficient architecture for implementing the control mechanism. Two major ideas of pipelined processing in per-group control and software processing of blocked band information dramatically reduce the complexity of the hardware. A control code sequence showing its randomness with uniform distribution is exemplified and qualification test results are briefly presented.

  • In this paper, we present a good example of extreme solar and geomagnetic activities from October to November, 2003. These activities are characterized by very large sunspot groups, X-class solar flares, strong particle events, and huge geomagnetic storms. We discuss ground-based and space-based data in terms of space weather scales. Especially, we present several solar and geomagnetic disturbance data produced in Korea : sunspots, geo-magnetograms, aurora, Ionogram, and Total Electron Content (TEC) map by GPS data. Finally, we introduce some examples of the satellite orbit and communication effects caused by these activities; e.g., the disturbances of the KOMPSAT-1 operational orbit and HF communication.

  • All of the military aircrafts in Korea Air Force are administered and operated together in the same system regardless of whether they are equipped with the data communication capability or not. The absence of the data communication capability in some of the aircrafts might increase whole kill chain hour at the point of the Network Centric Warfare achievement. Network synergy effects cannot also be desired if the section which is not connected to the network influences to the whole tactical network. Equipping aircrafts with the data communication capability could be done by upgrading the aircrafts, but resulting in high costs and long updating time. This paper is a research about the design and implementation of the UMPC based Data Link System to aircrafts that do not have the data communication capability. The proposed system grafts the UHF-based wireless modem technology and the aircraft flight mission support software onto the off-the-shelf UMPC and GPS system. The employed UHF radio equipment allows communicating tactic data with another aircrafts on the air, the ground control point, and even the Tactical Air Control Party(TACP) control vehicle that achieve missions with aircrafts. It thereby increases such capabilities as navigation aid, situation awareness, quick target identification and attack. We also applied Closed Air Support(CAS) scenarios, which is very close to the real environment, to the experiments of the proposed system. The experimental results show that the proposed system could support the data communication capability effectively and the flight mission at low costs of money and time.

  • Precipitation is one of key components in hydrological modeling and water balance studies. A comprehensive, optimized and sustainable water balance monitoring requires the availability of accurate precipitation data. The amount of precipitation measured in a gauge is less than the actual precipitation reaching the ground. The objective of this study is to determine the wind-induced under-catch of solid precipitation and develop a continuous adjustment function for measurements of all types of winter precipitation (from rain to dry snow), which can be used for operational measurements based on data available at standard automatic weather stations. This study provides Bayesian analysis for the systematic structure of catch ratio in precipitation measurement.

  • Tunneling is one of the challenging tasks in civil engineering because it involves a variety of decision making and engineering judgment based on knowledge and experience. One of the challenges is to construct tunnels in risky areas under shallow overburden. In order to prevent the collapse of ceilings and walls of a large tunnels, in such conditions, either a sequential excavation method (SEM) or ground reinforcing method, or a combination of both, can be utilized. This research deals with the numerical modeling of L-profiles and pipe fore-poling pre-support systems in the adit tunnel in northwestern Iran. The first part of the adit tunnel has been drilled in alluvial material with very weak geotechnical parameters. Despite applying an SEM in constructing this tunnel, analyzing the results of numerical modeling done using FLAC3D, as well as observations during drilling, indicate the tunnel instability. To improve operational safety and to prevent collapse, pre-support systems, including pipe fore-poling and L-profiles were designed and implemented. The results of the numerical modeling coupled with monitoring during operation, as well as the results of instrumentation, indicate the efficacy of both these methods in tunnel collapse prevention. Moreover, the results of modeling using FLAC3D and SECTION BUILDER suggest a double angle with equal legs ($2L100{\times}100{\times}10mm$) in both box profile and tee array as an alternative section to pipe fore-poling system while neither $L80{\times}80{\times}8mm$ nor $2L80{\times}80{\times}8mm$ can sustain the axial and shear stresses exerted on pipe fore-poling system.

  • US 8th Army in the attack on the Western Front was a situation that was frustrated by the 13th Corps Communist army. To this time support this, goals that have been granted to the US 1st Marine Division that initiated the attack in Mupyonri direction, lack the potential to achieve was not decisive. It was a operation specific erroneous judgment that occurred because there was no one accurately grasp the battlefield of the situation the wrong UN Forces Command. Tactical victory can be to maximize the operation outcomes. However, there is no possible failure of the operation is to expand the tactical success. This is because the failure of the operation, because directly linked to the success or failure of the war. Tactical victory can be to maximize the operation outcomes. However, operation specific failure is not it possible to expand the tactical victory. Therefore tactical success of the US 1st Marine Division, can not compensate for operation specific failure of the United Nations Forces Command. However, Chinese Communist Army 9th Corps is obsessed only victory of tactics to annihilate the US 1st Marine Division, by being fixation to the Chosin whole area, it was not possible to run a operational operation. Therefore tactical success df the US 1st Marine Division, Chinese Communist Army 9th Corps is to extinguish the ability to increase the number of the 13th Corps of the Western Front, 8th Army US have contributed to have escaped the crisis. In addition, the US 10th Corps while maintaining the combat force, by an important role to withdraw through the sea, was able to complement the misjudgment of the operation.

  • Particulate matter (PM) is regarded as a major threat to public health and safety in urban areas. Despite a variety of efforts to systemically monitor the distribution of PM, the limited amount of sampling sites may not provide sufficient coverage over the areas where the monitoring stations are not located in close proximity. This study examined the capacity of using remotely sensed data to estimate the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in Seoul, South Korea. Multiple linear regression models were developed using the multispectral band data from the Moderate-resolution imaging spectro-radiometer equipped on Terra (MODIS) and Operational Land Imager equipped on Landsat 8 (Landsat 8) and meteorological parameters. Compared to MODIS-derived models (r2 = 0.25 for PM10, r2 = 0.30 for PM2.5), the Landsat 8-derived models showed improved model reliabilities (r2 = 0.17 to 0.57 for PM10, r2 = 0.47 to 0.71 for PM2.5). Landsat 8 model-derived PM concentration and ground-truth PM measurements were cross-validated to each other to examine the capability of the models for estimating the PM concentration. The modeled PM concentrations showed a stronger correlation to PM10 (r = 0.41 to 0.75) than to PM2.5 (r = 0.14 to 0.82). Overall, the results indicate that Landsat 8-derived models were more suitable in estimating the PM concentrations. Despite the day-to-day fluctuation in the model reliability, several models showed strong correspondences of the modeled PM concentrations to the PM measurements.
