  • Railway has recently played an important role in preventing global warming caused by green house gases and furthering a low carbon green growth, The various railway research centers have conducted facilitated studies on saving energy. In particular, urban railway has emerged as the best means of public transportation in terms of punctuality, safety and environmentally friendliness. There are various ways to save energy in terms of operation of urban railway system, and they can be generally divided into hardware aspects that pertain to structure of vehicles and development of control system and software aspects that pertain to effective operation of trains based on operation patterns and diagram control. In this paper, we investigated drive assistance system for railway energy efficiency. The railway operation patterns and train diagram management programs were researched.

Simulation model for Francis and Reversible Pump Turbines

  • When simulating the dynamic behaviour of a hydro power plant, it is essential to have a good representation of the turbine behaviour. The pressure transients in the system occurs because the flow changes, which the turbine defines. The flow through the turbine is a function of the pressure, the speed of rotation and the wicket gate opening and is, most often described in a performance diagram or Hill diagram. In the Hill diagram, the efficiency is drawn like contour lines, hence the name. A turbines Hill diagram is obtained by performance tests on scaled model in a laboratory. However, system dynamic simulations have to be performed in the early stage of a project, before the turbine manufacturer has been chosen and the Hill diagram is known. Therefore one have to rely on diagrams for a turbine with similar speed number. The Hill diagram is drawn through measured points, so for using the diagram in a simulation program, one have to iterate in the diagram based on curve fitting of the measured points. This paper describes an alternative method. By means of the Euler turbine equation, it is possible to set up two differential equations which represents the turbine performance with good enough accuracy for the dynamic simulations. The only input is the turbine's main geometry, the runner blade in- and outlet angle and the guide vane angle at best efficiency point of operation (BEP). In the paper, simulated turbine characteristics for a high head Francis turbine, and for a reversible pump turbine are compared with laboratory measured characteristics.

  • Evolutionary operation is a useful tool for improving full-scale manufacturing process by systematically changing the levels of the process variables without jeopardizing the product. This paper presents a system design for the evolutionary operation software called 'evolutionary optimizer'. Evolutionary optimizer consists of four modules: factorial design, many variables, mixture, and mean/dispersion. Context diagram, data flow diagram and entity-relationship modelling are used to systematically design the evolutionary optimizer system.

  • This paper is investigated to variation of wave power generation operation rate, operating capacity and output with the wave conditions represented by wave height-period window. By the use of the long-term wave data from 1979 to 2002 which is provided by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute(KORDI), we calculated the monthly variation of significant wave height(Hs), zero-up crossing period(Tz) and distribution of wave appearance rate. And using the same wave data, it was charted the Hs-Tz and wave-energy scatter diagrams.

  • The operational temperature range of thermosiphon is generally limited from the critical point to the triple point of the working fluid to maintain two-phase state. Thermosiphon with mixed working fluid has a potential to widen the operational temperature range. In this study, the physical behavior of mixed working fluid during the transient operation of thermosiphon was analyzed with temperature-mole fraction diagram. The condenser and the evaporator temperature variations were explained by the dew line and the bubble line of the mixture. It is encouraging that the thermosiphon operation commences early with larger fraction of high boiling point component, but the temperature gap between the condenser and the evaporator due to the separation of two components has a negative effect on the officient cool down process.

  • This paper discusses the development of a generic train operation model from a set of Korean Urban Transit Regulations such as Regulation for Train Operation of Urban Transit, Regulation for Safety Requirements of Urban Transit and so on. It is to communicate with various stakeholders on urban transit system, and to elicit copious requirements in performance of the urban transit train operation based on the model.

A Microscopic Analysis on the Fundamental Diagram and Driver Behavior (교통기본도와 운전자 행태에 대한 미시적 분석)

  • PURPOSES : The fundamental diagram provides basic information necessary in the analysis of traffic flow and highway operation. When traffic flow is congested, the density-flow points in the fundamental diagram are widely scattered and move in a stochastic manner. This paper investigates the pattern of density-flow point transitions and identifies car-following behaviors underlying the density-flow transitions. METHODS : From a microscopic analysis of 722 fundamental diagrams of NGSIM data, a total of 20 transition patterns of fundamental diagrams are identified. Prominent features of the transition patterns are explained by the behavior of the leader and follower. RESULTS : It is found out that the average speed and the speed difference between the leader and the follower critically determine the density-flow transition pattern. The density-flow path is very sensitive to the values of vehicle speed and spacing especially at low speed and high density such that most fluctuations in the fundamental diagram in the congested regime is due to the noise of speed and spacing variations. CONCLUSIONS : The result of this study suggests that the average speed, the speed difference between the leader and the follower, and the random variations of speed and spacing are dominant factors that explain the transition patterns of a fundamental diagram.

Diagnosis of Cutting Stability of Portable Automatic Beveling Machine Using Spindle Motor Current (주축 모터를 이용한 포터블 자동 면취기의 가공 안정성 진단)

  • This study describes a system that monitors the tool and cutting state of automatic beveling operation in real time. As a signal for cutting state monitoring, a motor current detected from the spindle drive system of the automatic beveling machine is used to monitor abnormal state. Because automatic beveling is processed using a face milling cutter, the cutting force mechanism is the same as the milling process. The predicted cutting torque is obtained using a cutting force model based on specific cutting resistance. Then, the predicted cutting torque is converted into the spindle motor current value, and cutting state stability is diagnosed by comparing it with the motor current value detected during beveling operation. The experimental results show that the spindle motor current can detect abnormal cutting state such as overload and tool wear during beveling operation, and can diagnose the cutting stability using the proposed equip-current line diagram.

  • It needs a skillful experience to design and implement sequential circuits with a relay circuit or LD (Ladder Diagram). One makes out the operation of relay contacts sequentially in case of analyzing a relay circuit or LD. Still more, the design and analyzing of a complex relay circuit or LD are difficult. In this paper, we propose the EMFG (Extended Mark Graph) representation on relay circuits and LD.

Forbidden Detour Number on Virtual Knot

  • We show that the forbidden detour move, essentially introduced by Kanenobu and Nelson, is an unknotting operation for virtual knots. Then we define the forbidden detour number of a virtual knot to be the minimal number of forbidden detour moves necessary to transform a diagram of the virtual knot into the trivial knot diagram. Some upper and lower bounds on the forbidden detour number are given in terms of the minimal number of real crossings or the coefficients of the affine index polynomial of the virtual knot.
