These experiments were carried out to examine efficacy of soil solarization for control of pink root disease by means of mulching with transparent polyethylene sheets in the hot season. The effects of soil solarization on incidence of pink-root disease caused by Pyrenochaeta terrestris and on onion growth and on populations of soil fungi were investigated. Solarization was dramatically effective in reducing pink root incidence in onion seedling and harvested onion bulb. A 30-day and 40-day solarization treatment significantly improved seedling survival and increased yield of 'Changnyeong-deago' onion while decreasing incidence of pink root. Populations of soil fungi from fields planted to onion were assayed on selective media. Solarization treatment was effective in reducing populations of P. terrestris, Pythium spp., and Rhizoctonia sp. in soil. Increase of yield of onion bulbs was associated with control of soil-borne pathogenic fungi. Soil solarization had beneficial effects on yield, bulb diameter, or incidence of pink root.
This study estimated the predictive onion yield through Stepwise regression of big data and weather variables by onion growing season. The economic feasibility of onion observations using big data was analyzed using estimated predictive data. The social welfare effect was estimated through the model of Harberger's triangle using onion yield prediction with big data and it without big data. Predicted yield using big data showed a deviation of -9.0% to 4.2%. As a result of estimating the social welfare effect, the average annual value was 23.3 billion won. The average annual value of social welfare effects if big data was not used was measured at 22.4 billion won. Therefore, it was estimated that the difference between the social welfare effect when the prediction using big data was used and when it was not was about 950 million won. When these results are applied to items other than onion items, the effect will be greater. It is judged that it can be used as basic data to prove the justification of the agricultural observation project. However, since the simple Harberger's triangle theory has the limitation of oversimplifying reality, it is necessary to evaluate the economic value through various methods such as measuring the effect of agricultural observation under a more realistic rational expectation hypothesis in future studies.
This study was conducted to develop economic injury level (EIL) of onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, on welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L. var) in the early transplanting stage. The changes of welsh onion biomass, yield loss, and T. tabaci density were investigated according to the inoculation periods of T. tabaci. In the early transplanting stage of welsh onion, the yield loss (%) increased with increasing inoculation periods: 17.0, 53.3, 38.4, and 80.8% yield loss in 5, 10, 15, and 20 d inoculation periods, respectively. The relationship between Cumulative Insect Days (CID) of T. tabaci and yield loss (%) of welsh onion was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL of T. tabaci on welsh onion was estimated to 30 CID per plant based on the yield loss 12% (an empirical gain threshold 5% + marketable rate 93% of welsh onion). ET was calculated to 24 CID, which corresponds to 80% of EIL. Until a more defined EIL-model is developed, the present results should be useful for T. tabaci management in early growth stage of welsh onion. The effect of T. tabaci attack on the yield of welsh onion in late growing season (120 days after transplanting) was also examined. The yield of welsh onion increased at a low population density of T. tabaci and decreased at higher densities, showing a typical over-compensatory response.
In order to fad out an efficient way of topdressing nitrogen fertilizer in mulch-cropping system of onion(Allium cepa L.), solid, slow-release, and liquid forms of nitrogen fertilizers were allied to cv. 'Changnyungdaego' various number of times at different time, with 5 topdress applications of solid fertilizer serving as a control. Whole basal application of conventional solid fertilizer and 2 slow-release fertilizers were labor-saving and showed improved storage quality of bulbs, but resulted in poor plant growth and considerably low yield due to fertilizer shortage from early April. This suggests that topdress application is necessary. Liquid form of nitrogen fertilizer was more effective for plant growth and yield and saving labor than the solid form. Early applications was effective for increasing yield and storage quality of onion bulbs harvested. Thus two applications of liquid form of nitrogen fertilizer in February and March at rome month interval are recommended in mulch crowing system of onion.
In order to obtain basic information for breeding varieties of onion which is suitable at the southern part of Korea. 222 early mature variety and 219 late mature variety were grown from sep.1993 to jun. 1994 at experimental field of Muan-Gun area, and yield components and yield of onion plant ware observed. Early mature onion cv. Changnyeongchunghwan-gkeukjoseng and Keumjungjoseng showed higher yield than other early mature variety used in the experiment. It showed relatively long plant height and leaf sheath length and, height of bulb and diameter of bulb and high weight of bulb. Late mature onion cv. Chunjudaego showed higher yield than other late mature variety used in the experiment. It showed relatively long plant height and leaf sheath length and diameter of bulb, and high weight of bulb. Therefore, it was concluded that Changnyeongchunghwangkeukjoseng,Keumjungjoseng and Chunjudaego were the most suitable early and late mature varieties with high yield at the southern part of Korea.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the pre-heating treatment effects on the antioxidant properties of ethanolic garlic and onion extracts. Garlic and onion with or without heating ($100^{\circ}C$, 30 min) were extracted with ethanol, and the total phenolic content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, iron chelating ability, reducing power, and antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid emulsion system were evaluated. Garlic (41%) had a higher drying yield than onion (11%). Regardless of pre-heating, ethanol extracts of onion resulted in an approximately 25-fold higher yield than those of garlic. Thermal treatment before extraction decreased the levels of ethanol-soluble phenolics for both garlic and onion. Regardless of pre-heating, the radical scavenging abilities of ethanol extracts from garlic were greater than the ethanol extracts from onion. The iron chelating abilities of ethanol extracts from fresh and heated garlic were 85 and 81% at 10 mg/mL, respectively, whereas those of onion extracts were 10 and 9% at the same concentration, respectively. However, no differences in reducing power between garlic and onion extracts were observed. Both garlic and onion inhibited the formation of hydroperoxide in linoleic acid emulsion systems when ethanol was used as a solvent. Overall, garlic extracts had greater antioxidant activity than onion extracts, and the antioxidant activity of garlic and onion extracts were not significantly affected by thermal treatment.
This study was designed to investigate the role of onion as a natural antioxidant. Onion was distinguished as yellow onion peel and onion flesh. Onion samples were extracted with 5 different kinds of solvents such as water, 70% ethanol, 99.9%ethanol, 99.9% methanol, and 96% butanol in order to select optimal extraction solvents, In this part of study linoleic acid was used s an model system for the purpose of determining the antioxidant activities. The optimal extraction rate of various solvents containing onion samples was determined by measuring extraction yield, electron donating ability(EDA), thiobarbituric acid(TBA), and thiocyanate, which are common methods for measuring activity. As a result 70% ethanol was shown as the most effective solvent.

To use onion(Allium cepa L.) residue as raw materials of food product, yields of onion-juice according to various extracting methods and optimal extracting condition of quercetin and its related glycosides were carried out. Onion juices gained by the methods of pressing, rotary crushing, freeze pressing and enzyme treatment. The yield by the method of enzyme treatment was higher than others. The yields of juice from fresh onion and heat-treated onion(8$0^{\circ}C$/10min) by pressing were 66% and 83%, respectively. Ethanol extraction of onion was efficient at 75$^{\circ}C$ and acetic acid extraction was proper at 3% concentration for 3 hours at 11$0^{\circ}C$. The onion extract was fractionated in the order of hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and butanol to test flavonoids. The highest abundant flavonoids were found in ethylacetate and butanol fraction.
Garlic and onion are grown in major cultivation regions that depend on the crop condition and the meteorology of the production area. Therefore, when yields are to be predicted, it is reasonable to use a statistical model in which both the crop and the meteorological elements are considered. In this paper, using a multiple linear regression model, we predicted garlic and onion yields in major cultivation regions. We used the MODIS NDVI that reflects the crop conditions, and six meteorological elements for 7 major cultivation regions from 2006 to 2015. The multiple linear regression models were suggested by using stepwise regression in the extraction of independent variables. As a result, the MODIS NDVI in February was chosen the significant independent variable of the garlic and onion yield prediction model. In the case of meteorological elements, the garlic yield prediction model were the mean temperature (March), the rainfall (November, March), the relative humidity (April), and the duration time of sunshine (April, May). Also, the rainfall (November), the duration time of sunshine (January), the relative humidity (April), and the minimum temperature (June) were chosen among the variables as the significant meteorological elements of the onion yield prediction model. MODIS NDVI and meteorological elements in the model explain 84.4%, 75.9% of the garlic and onion with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 42.57 kg/10a, 340.29 kg/10a. These lead to the result that the characteristics of variations in garlic and onion growth according to MODIS NDVI and other meteorological elements were well reflected in the model.
To find out the optimum fertilizer level for onion, early maturing cultivar Fechongjoseng, experiment with four fertilizer levels was conducted of the field of the paddy and upland in Muan and Changyeong from Sep.1993 to Feb.1995. The yield character of onion was higher and rate of the rottenness was lowest under the treatment of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=28-9.5-23Kg/10a in the soil of paddy and upland field of Muan area. But the onion yield was excellent and rate of the rottenness was lowest under the treatments, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=21-19-17.3Kg/10a, in the soil of paddy field and $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=28-9.5-23Kg/10a, in the soil of upland field of Changyeong area.
