  • This study describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of gas wave propagation in the pipe system. Most calculations of compressible flows in the pipe have been based on the method of characteristics. This technique has propensity to truncate waves and is difficult to apply to non-perfect gas. A method that describes the application of a two-step Lax-Wendroff acheme to solution of the unsteady one-dimentional flow in the pipe was developed. Theoretical calculations using both the method of characteristics and the two-step Lax-Wendroff method are presented including a realistic model for heat transfer and friction processes. In the present work, account is taken of the nonlinear behavior. For sections of parallel pipe, an one dimensional unsteady homentropic analysis is employed, and a numerical solution is obtained with the aid of a digital computer, using the method of characteristics and two-step Lax-Wendroff method. This analysis is then combined with boundary models, based on a quasi-steady flow approach, to give a complete treatment of the flow behavior in the pipe system.

  • Using appropriate transformations, the differential equation for flexural free vibration of a cantilever bar with variably distributed mass and stiffness is reduced to a Bessel's equation or an ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients by selecting suitable expressions, such as power functions and exponential functions, for the distributions of stiffness and mass. The general solutions for flexural free vibration of one-step bar with variable cross-section are derived and used to obtain the frequency equation of multi-step cantilever bars. The new exact approach is presented which combines the transfer matrix method and closed form solutions of one step bars. Two numerical examples demonstrate that the calculated natural frequencies and mode shapes of a 27-storey building and a television transmission tower are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. It is also shown through the numerical examples that the selected expressions are suitable for describing the distributions of stiffness and mass of typical tall buildings and high-rise structures.

  • In this research, a wafar-level transfer method of cantilever array on a conventional CMOS circuit has been developed for high density probe-based data storage. The transferred cantilevers were silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) cantilevers integrated with poly silicon heaters and piezoelectric sensors, called thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilevers. In this process, we did not use a SOI wafer but a conventional p-type wafer for the fabrication of the thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilever arrays. Furthermore, we have developed a very simple transfer process, requiring only one step of cantilever transfer process for the integration of the CMOS wafer and cantilevers. Using this process, we have fabricated a single thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilever, and recorded 65nm data bits on a PMMA film and confirmed a charge signal at 5nm of cantilever deflection. And we have successfully applied this method to transfer 34 by 34 thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilever arrays on a CMOS wafer. We obtained reading signals from one of the cantilevers.

  • The effects of initial vibrational energy on VV energy transfer in the collinear collision of two diatomic molecules, either homonuclear or heteronuclear, has been studied over a range of collision energies in classical mechanics. When initial vibrational energy is very large, only a small fraction of vibrational energy in the excited molecule is transferred to the colliding partner. In this case, the VV step is found to be strongly coupled with VT during the collision. At low collision energies, energy transfer in the homonuclear case of $O_2$+ $O_2$ with small initial vibrational energy is found to be very inefficient. In the heteronuclear case of CH + HC with the initial energy equivalent to one vibrational quantum, VV energy exchange is found to be very efficient at such energies. Between 0.3 and 0.5 ev, nearly all of vibrational energy of the excited molecule with one to about three vibrational quanta in CH + HC is efficiently transferred to the colliding partner through pure VV process in a sequence of down steps during the collision. The occurrence of multiple impacts during the collision of two heteronuclear molecules and the collisional bond dissociation of homonuclear molecules are also discussed.

  • This paper presents the development of a system with a reverse matrix converter (RMC) for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive and its effective control method. The voltage transfer ratio of the general matrix converter is restricted to a maximum value of 0.866, which is not suitable for applications whose source voltages are lower than the load voltages. The proposed RMC topology can step up the voltage without any additional components in the conventional circuit. Its control method is different from traditional matrix converter’s one, thus this paper proposes control schemes of RMC by means of controlling both the generator and motor side currents with properly designed control loop. The converter can have sinusoidal input/output current waveforms in steady state condition as well as a boosted voltage. In this paper, a hardware system with an RMC for a PMSM drive system is described. The performance of the system was investigated through experiments

  • The effects of cryoprotectants (glycerol, DMSO and ethylene glycol) and the concentrations (0, 0, 25, 0.5and 1.0 M) of sucrose in the diluent on the is vitro survival of mouse morulae froaen rapidly in liquid nitrogenvapour were examined. When the embryos were equilibrated in 1.5 M cryoprotectants +0.25 M sucrose in one-step or in 3.0 M cryoprotectants +0.25 sucrose in two-step and diluted with 0, 0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 M sucrose solution after thawing, high survival rates were obtained in ethylene glycol (48.0% to 88.2 %) or in glycerol (35.0 % to 77.8 %). These results show that 1.5 M ethylene glycol is a highly efficient cryoprotective agent for the rapid freezing of mouse morula embryos and 0.5 M sucrose was optimal concentration in the diluent after thawing.

  • The aim of the present study was to compare two different serum-free media, modified synthetic oviduct fluid (mSOF) and modified potassium simplex optimization medium (mKSOM) containing 20% RD (RPMI1640 + DMEM, 1:1 v/v) (RD-mKSOM), for in vitro culture (IVC) of bovine embryos. After in vitro maturation and fertilization, the presumptive zygotes were cultured in two different serum-free conditions for 7 days and 9 days to evaluate blastocyst formation and hatching, respectively. Serum supplemented conventional CR2 medium was used as control. After 7 day of culture, there was no significant difference in cleavage and blastocyst formation rates among three groups (mSOF, 59.3 and 30.1%; RD-mKSOM, 65.0 and 41.5%; control, 51.6 and 38.0%, respectively). Hatching rate was significantly higher in control (69.0%) than other experimental groups (mSOF, 22.0%; RD-mKSOM, 39.5%) (P<0.0001 and P<0.001, respectively). Although both serum-free conditions showed lower hatching rates than serum-added control, in serum-free groups, RD-mKSOM showed significantly higher hatching rate than mSOF (P<0.001). In addition, one-step using RD-mKSOM may facilitate IVC procedure than two-step culture system. In conclusion, the results indicate that one-step RD-mKSOM is more suitable defined culture system for IVC of bovine embryos than two-step mSOF.

  • The distribution routing problem is one of the important problems in distribution and supply center management. This research is concerned with an integrated distribution routing problem for multi-supply centers based on improved genetic algorithm and GUI-type programming. In this research, we used a three-step approach; in step 1 a sector clustering model is developed to transfer the multi-supply center problem to single supply center problems which are more easy to be solved, in step 2 we developed a vehicle routing model with time and vehicle capacity constraints and in step 3, we developed a GA-TSP model which can improve the vehicle routing schedules by simulation. For the computational purpose, we developed a GUI-type computer program according to the proposed methods and the sample outputs show that the proposed method is very effective on a set of standard test problems, and it could be potentially useful in solving the distribution routing problems in multi-supply center problem.

  • This study were carried out to investigate the effective concentration of cryoprotective agents and sucrose by one-step straw method, and to determine the optimum thawing temperature and equilibration time of frozen porcine embryos. The porcine embryos foflowing dehydration by cryoprotective agents and a various concentration of sucrose were directly plunged into liquid nitrogen and thawed in 3$0^{\circ}C$ water. Survival rate was defined by FDA test. The results are sunnnarized as follows : 1. The survival rates of porcine embryos after ultrarapid frozen4hawing in the freezing medium with a various concentration of glycerol, DMSO and propanediol added 0.25M sucrose were higher survival rate than those of sucrose concentration of 0.50M. 2. The survival rates of porcine embryos after ultrarapid ftozen4hawing in the freezing medium added 0.25M and 0.SOM sucrose were higher survival rate than those of sucrose concentration of 0.75M and 1.00M. 3. The temperature thawed at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 3$0^{\circ}C$ resulted in a significantly higher embryos survival rate after 72 hrs in culture than did at 35$^{\circ}C$. 4. The equilibration time on the survival rate of porcine embryos was attained after short period of time(2.5~5 min.) in the freezing medium higher than long period of time(10~20 min.).
