The earth pressure coefficient at rest for clayey soils in the one-dimensional state, $K_0$ obtained from the triaxial test is not correct in principle because the seepage flow is radial and the displacement of soil elements is three-dimensional. Measurements of the earth pressure and the pore water pressure during one-dimension consolidation in the consolidometer ring are presented. The earth pressure and pore water pressure are measured directly by a circular part of the consolidometer ring of a floating type at its mid height. A plastic clay showed $K_0$=0.5 irrespective of pressure in the consolidometer ring.
Creep of soils has a significant impact on mechanical properties. The one-dimensional consolidation creep test, thermal analysis test, scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, and mercury compression test were performed on Guilin red clay to study the changes in bound water and microstructure during the creep process of Guilin red clay. According to the results of the tests, only free and weakly bound water is discharged during the creep of Guilin red clay. When the consolidation pressure p is in the 12.5-400.0 kPa range, it is primarily the discharge of free water; when the consolidation pressure p is in the 800.0-1600.0 kPa range, the weakly bound water is converted to free water and discharged. After consolidation creep, the microstructure of soil changes from granular overhead contact structure to flat sheet-like stacking structure, with a decrease in the number of large and medium pores, an increase in the number of small and micro pores, and a decrease in the fractal dimension of pores. The creep process of red clay is the discharge of weakly bound water as well as the compression of large pores into small pores and the transition of soil particles from loose to dense.

The purpose of this study was to research on compressibility characteristics of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil(TLS) for recycling dredged soil, bottom ash and waste tire. The TLS used in this experiment consists of dredged soil, cement, waste tire powder and bottom ash. Test specimens were prepared with various content of waste tire powder ranged from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals by the dried weight of dredged soil. Several series of one-dimensional consolidation tests were carried out. Based on the experimental results, as the waste tire powder increased, the swelling index of TLS increased. The compression index and swelling index of the TLS with bottom ash content showed lower value than without bottom ash. Then, compressibility characteristics of TLS were strongly influenced by mixing conditions of waste tire powder content and bottom ash content.
A series of one-dimensional cylinder sedimentation test, seepage consolidation test and two-dimensional deposition model test were conducted to examine the characteristics of deposition and volume change of dredged soils containing the high water content, and these experimental results were compared with the sedimentary conditions of actual dredged-reclaimed fields to obtain the relations of a volume change by settling what is required for design. In addition, the change of water content and the distribution of fine grained soils after sedimentation were investigated. Thus, it was concluded that deposition height increased lineary as substantial soil volume increased, and also the elevation of interface increasea proportionately at both the starting time and the finishing time of virtual self-weight consolidation in one-dimensional sedimentation. Furthermore, the two-dimensional model test results were shown to describe the plain distribution of water content and fine grained silt where dredged soil was deposited by two dimensional flowing, and the water content was distributed to wide range from the minimum water content 30% to maximum 180% according to the passed amount of №200 sieve percentage.
For normally consolidated clay, several researchers have developed a number of theoretical time factors to determine the coefficient of consolidation However, depending on the assumptions and analytical techniques, it could considerably vary even for a specific degree of consolidation. In this paper, a method is proposed to determine a consistent coefficient of consolidation over all ranges of degree of consolidation by applying the concept of the Optimum Design Technique. The initial excess pore pressure distribution is assumed to be obtainable by the successive spherical cavity expansion theory. The dissipation of pore pressure is simulated by means of two dimensional linear-uncoupled axisymmetric consolidation analysis. The minimization of the differences between the measured and the predicted excess pore pressures was carried by BFGS unconstrained optimum design algorithm with one dimensional golden section search technique. By analyzing numerical and real field examples, it can be found that the adopted optimum technique gives a consistent and convergent results.

The ultimate settlement of soft clay consists of three parts: $\circled1$ immediate settlement, S$\sub$d/; $\circled2$ Primary consolidation settlement, S$\sub$c/; $\circled3$ Secondary consolidation settlement, S$\sub$s/. In general, S$\sub$c/ can be accurately calculated by one-dimensional consolidation and S$\sub$s/ or S$\sub$d/ may be ignored. This paper focuses on a calculation method to estimate the immediate settlement induced by lateral deformation of subgrade, to which shear stress is applied by embankment on soft ground. Immediate settlement and consolidation settlement are discussed by comparing the field measurement of the Yangsan test embankment on treated soft foundation by vertical paper drains.
The microcomputer program PileNSF (Pile Negative Skin Friction) is developed by the authors in a graphical user interface (GUI) environment using $MATLAB^{(R)}$ for predicting the bearing capacity of a pile embedded in a consolidating ground by surcharge loading. The proposed method extends the one-dimensional soil-pile model based on the nonlinear load transfer method in OpenSees to perform an advanced one-dimensional consolidation settlement analysis based on finite strain. The developed program has significant features of incorporating Mikasa's finite strain consolidation theory that accounts for reduction in the thickness of the clay layer as well as the change of the soil-pile interface length during the progress of consolidation. In addition, the consolidating situation of the ground by surcharge filling after the time of pile installation can also be considered in the analysis. The program analysis by the presented method has been verified and validated with several case studies of long-term test on single piles subjected to negative skin friction. Predicted results of negative skin friction (downdrag and dragload) as a result of long from consolidation settlement are shown to be in good agreement with measured and observed case data.
A series of one-dimensional consolidation tests and triaxial creep tests were performed on Nansha clays, which are interactive marine and terrestrial deposits, to investigate their time-dependent behaviour. Based on experimental observations of oedometer tests, normally consolidated soils exhibit larger secondary compression than overconsolidated soils; the secondary consolidation coefficient ($C_{\alpha}$) generally gets the maximum value as load approaches the preconsolidation pressure. The postsurcharge secondary consolidation coefficient ($C_{\alpha}$') is significantly less than $C_{\alpha}$. The observed secondary compression behaviour is consistent with the $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ concept, regardless of surcharging. The $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ ratio is a constant that is applicable to the recompression and compression ranges. Compared with the stage-loading test, the single-loading oedometer test can evaluate the entire process of secondary compression; $C_{\alpha}$ varies significantly with time and is larger than the $C_{\alpha}$ obtained from the stage-loading test. Based on experimental observations of triaxial creep tests, the creep for the drained state differs from the creep for the undrained state. The behaviour can be predicted by a characteristic relationship among axial strain rate, deviator stress level and time.
Although natural soil deposits hat.e been consolidated under Ko-stress system, the soil behavior has been predicted in laboratory from the results of tests performed on specimens consolidated under an isotropic stress s).stem. A series of undrained triaxial compression tests are performed on remolded specimens of clay consolidated under both types of stress systems, and the results at.e compared. One dimensional consolidation history induces anisotropy in clalrs, which is called as the stress induced anisotropy. However, if the clays would be reconsolidated under isotropic stress system. the anisotropy of undrained stress비h would be decreased with decrease of overconsolidation ratio. Undrained shear strength of norma]Iy consolidated clay depends on consolidation methods. Both the Rutledge hypothesis and the study of Henkel and Sowa do not agree with the test results obtained in this paper. In addition, a new theory is explained about the relationships between consolidation stresses, water contents and undiained shear strength.
This paper presented an application of the geotechnical hybrid-online simulation to the consolidation settlement problem of soft clay. Conventional numerical analyses have used idealized soil constitutive models obtained from the laboratory soil tests. On the other hand, in the hybrid-online simulation, soil response was directly introduced to numerical analyses from the soil element test, and, therefore, the complicated parameter estimation was not required in this method. Fundamentals of the hybrid-online simulation method and the development of the algorithm and corresponding hardware and software for the system were presented in this study. Furthermore, an incremental loading consolidation and the hydraulic conductivity test and a comparative study using the Terzagh's conventional consolidation theory were carried out for the system verification including the performance of the experimental device and source coding of software components, and the data reliability obtained from the system. In conclusion, we found that the hybrid-online consolidation simulation system could reproduce the consolidation behavior of the remolded Kaolinite specimen withoutany discrepancies.
