  • This paper contains the results of the study on the development of fracture and crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials, such as concrete or rocks, using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). A new discrete element numerical model is proposed as the basis for analyzing the inelastic evolution and growth of cracks up to the point of gross material failure. The model is expected to predict the fracture behavior for the quasi-brittle material structure using the elementary aggregate level, the interaction between aggregate materials, and bond cementation. The algorithms generate normal and shear forces between two interfacing blocks and contains two kinds of contact logic, one for connected blocks and the other one for blocks that are not directly connected. The Mohr-Coulomb theory has been used for the fracture limit. In this algorithm the particles are moving based on the connected block logic until the forces increase up to the fracture limit. After passing the limit, the particles are governed by the discrete block logic. In setting up a discrete polygon element model, two dimensional polygons are used to investigate the response of an assembly of different shapes, sizes, and orientations with blocks subjected to simple applied loads. Several examples involving assemblies of particles are presented to show the behavior of the fracture and the failure process.

  • Material selection is one of the important activities in design and manufacturing. A selected material at the conceptual design stage affects material properties of the designed part as well as manufacturability and cost of the final product. Unfortunately there are not many accessible material databases that can be used for design. In this research, a web-based material database was constructed. In order to assist designers to compare different materials, two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphs were provided. Using these graphical tools, multi-dimensional comparison was available in more intuitive manner. To provide environmental safety of materials, the database included National Fire Protection Association publication Standard No.704. The web-based tool is available at http://fab.snu.ac.kr/matdb.

  • According to the properties of monoclinic materials, the normal and shear stresses are depending on both normal and shear strains. In the current investigation, the static analysis of monoclinic plates based on three dimensional elasticity theory is investigated. New governing equations and boundary conditions are derived for monoclinic plates and the Differential Quadrature Method (DQM) is used to solve the static problem. In our method of solution, no approximation is used and the DQM is adopted in all directions. By showing the differences between our results and the results for especially orthotropic plates, one can find that it is worth to investigate the monoclinic plates to have more accurate results.

  • Unconfined compression test (UCT) is widely conducted in laboratories to evaluate the mechanical behavior of frozen soils. However, its results are sensitive to the initial conditions of sample creation by freezing as well as the end-surface conditions during loading of the specimen into the apparatus for testing. This work compared ice samples prepared by three-dimensional and one-dimensional freezing. The latter created more-homogenous ice samples containing fewer entrapped air bubbles or air nuclei, leading to relatively stable UCT results. Three end-surface conditions were compared for UCT on ice specimens made by one-dimensional freezing. Steel disc cap with embedded rubber was found most appropriate for UCT. Three frozen materials (ice, frozen sand, and frozen silt) showed different failure patterns, which were classified as brittle failure and ductile failure. Ice and frozen sand showed strain-softening, while frozen silt showed strain-hardening. Subsequent investigation considered the influence of fines content on the unconfined compression behavior of frozen soil mixtures with fines contents of 0-100%. The mixtures showed a brittle-to-ductile transition of failure patterns at 10%-20% fines content.

  • At nanoscales, the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) can best describe the behavior of phonons which are energy carriers in crystalline materials. Through this study, the phonon transport in some micro/nanoscale problems was simulated with the Monte Carlo method which is a kind of the stochastic approach to the BTE. In the Monte Carlo method, the superparticles of which the number is the weighted value to the actual number of phonons are allowed to drift and be scattered by other ones based on the scattering probability. Accounting for the phonon dispersion relation and polarizations, we have confirmed the one-dimensional transient phonon transport in ballistic and diffusion limits, respectively. The thermal conductivity for GaAs was also calculated from the kinetic theory by using the proposed model. Besides, we simulated the electrostatic discharge event in the NMOS transistor as a two-dimensional problem by applying the Monte Carlo method.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) interior beam-column joints with high-strength materials: concrete compressive strength of 100 MPa and the yield strength of longitudinal bars of 685 MPa, were analyzed using three-dimensional (3-D) nonlinear finite element method (FEM). Specimen OKJ3 of joint shear failure type was a plane interior joint, and Specimen 12 of beam flexural failure type was a 3-D interior joint with transverse beams. Though the analytical initial stiffness was higher than experimental one, the analytical results gave a good agreement with the test results on the maximum story shear forces, the failure mode.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore ways toward the hat design development by looking into the formative and aesthetic characteristics of the works of Philip Treacy, the designer who raised hats to one of the important fashion accessories. This study concretely investigates the formative characteristics of Treacy's hats in terms of shapes, materials, colours and decorations. According to this study, the shape of his hats shows the natural and specific objects in three dimensions, not in basic shape of hats. He uses combination of a variety of materials, adding unique materials to existing ones, so that they not only create a specific atmosphere but also extend the limitation which used to be thought as materials for hats. In the field of colour, he mainly used black and white until 1999, but since 2000 he has been using vivid and splendid colors. And he uses feathers or nets for decorations of the hats. As the result of the comprehensive analysis of Treacy's works, this study characterizes his works by surrealistic, three-dimensional, rhythmic and future-oriented. Therefore, Philip Treacy's hat design can be defined three dimensional considering the formative beauty, and can be characterized by use of unique materials, vivid & bold colours, moderate decorations, f variety of lines, and asymmetrical structures. These characteristics show surrealistic, three-dimensional and futuristic message which rhythm can be felt. He presents unlimited capability in hat designs as a representative of human being's basic will for creating new ones beyond this real world. It is considered that this study can help broaden the limitation of the hat design which used to repeat simple forms in the Past and help explore ways for developmental direction of hat design in the future.
