Based on the data representing four typical Korean pine forest types, the age structure, DBH distribution, species composition, and forking rule were systemically analyzed for old-growth Korean pine forest in Liangshui Nature Reserve, northeast China. The age structure of Korean pine trees was strongly uneven-aged with one dominated peak following normal distribution, and age of trees varied from 100 to 180 years within a stand. The DBH and height differences in same age class (20 years) varied from 28 cm~64 cm and 5 to 20 m, respectively. Many conifer and hard wood species, such as spruce, fir, costata birch, basswood, oak, and elm, were mixed with dominated trees of Korean pine. The canopy of the old-growth Korean pine forest can be divided into two layers, and differences of mean age and height between Layer I and Layer II were ranged 80~150 years and 7~13 m, respectively. The Weibull function was used to model the diameter distribution and performed well to describe size-class distribution either with a single peak in over-story canopy and inverse J-shape in under-story canopy for old-growth Korean pine stands. The forking height of Korean pine trees ranged from 16m to 24 m (mean 19.4 m) and tree age about 120 to 160 years old. The results will provide a scientific basis to protect and recover the ecosystem of natural old-growth Korean pine and also provide the model in management of Korean pine plantation.
Old-growth development for two different second-growth northern hardwood stands in the North America was evaluated with a computer simulation. The two sites compared were a representative 77 year old even-aged stand (Phelps) with heavy dominance by pole size classes, and an older uneven-aged stand with some existing old-growth structural features (Wildcat Creek). Each stand was evaluated in its natural progress toward old-growth structural conditions with stand structure, size distribution of live and dead trees, percent stand area in canopy gaps, and visual canopy profile and overhead view. The Phelps stand reached the minimum structural threshold for the old-growth stage after 74 years. Only 13 years was required for Wildcat Creek stand to reach the old-growth threshold. During the 45 years of simulation, the diameter distributions of both stands became broader and flatter. DBH distribution of dead trees had a general descending trend over the simulation in each stand. Gaps at Phelps were typically small after 45 years. Gap area at Wildcat Creek was somewhat more constant over the 45 years of simulation but a big gap was formed because of the death of several adjacent large trees.
The present study conducted a stem analysis to trace growth information of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) and predict the future changes in growth volume. For this purpose, six L. kaempferi trees over 47 years old were cut at 1-2 m intervals from a height of 0.2 m, and circular plates of 5 cm thickness were collected for stem analysis. The analysis indicated that approximately 1-8 years are required to grow up to chest height. The annual height and diameter growth increased rapidly until the trees are 15 years old and gradually decreased after 20 years. The volume of 30-year-old trees in Oegam-ri forests, which were well-managed after artificial reforestation, was 0.4837 m3, whereas that in unmanaged Singi-ri forests was 0.1956 m3. Although the volume of individual trees differed greatly depending on the forest management status, it was found that the volume increased by 1.67-1.76, 2.49, and 3.49 times at 40, 50, and 60 years age, respectively, compared to the legal harvesting age 30. Therefore, factors such as the carbon dioxide reduction effect, forest management benefits, and the condition of trees at the site should be considered before harvesting trees.
To investigate and compare the effects of air pollution near Seoul on soil ion, plant nutrient contents and plant growth, 14 Quercus mongolica forests were studied from Mt. Namsan in Seoul to Mt. Maebongsan in Kangwon-Do along the line transect. Soil pH values decreased as approached to Seoul. Concentrations of basic cations such as exchangeable Ca/sup 2+/, Mg/sup 2+/ and Na/sup +/ and effective cation exchange capacity(ECEC) in forest soil decreased as approached to Seoul. Ca/sup 2+/ and Mg/sup 2+/ contents in l-year-old Q. mongolica twigs decreased, but their K/sup +/ and Na/sup +/ contents increased as approached to Seoul. Ca/sup 2+/ contents in l-year-old Q. mongolica leaves decreased, but their K/sup +/ and Mg/sup 2+/ contents increased as approached to Seoul. Length of l-year-old twigs generally decreased near Seoul. Tree-ring analyses of Q. mongolica trees in Mt. Namsan and Mt. Yebongsan showed that mean tree-ring width in Mt. Namsan was narrower than that of Mt. Yebongsan from early 1970's to late 1980's.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of jellyfish chips in promoting the survival and growth of Pinus thunbergii seedlings in a coastal area based on a five-year field investigation from 2012 to 2016. Seedling survival rate was significantly higher in the treatment (96%) than in the control (75%) group in 2012. Furthermore, the height of five-year-old seedlings after plantation in 2012 was significantly greater in the treatment (3.41 m) than in the control (2.32 m) group (t=10.151; p-value<0.01). These results revealed that jellyfish chips can improve soil condition by enhancing moisture retention during the early growth stages and supplying nutrients to the seedlings over time. Our findings indicated that jellyfish chips could be used effectively as an organic fertilizer for growing coastal disaster prevention forests.
Natural forest stand plays a very important role to understand the forest ecosystem in Korea, in which there is no ancient forests aye left. Several old growth Korean fir stands were studied to determine their naturalness. Internationally accept-ed criteria for virgin or natural forests were used and the changes in several stages by stand dynamics were applied. Although the areas survey is limited in size, it was discovered that they clearly represent certain characteristics of naturalness. This study and collected data will hopefully be the starting point for the further studies for naturalness of forest in Korea in the future.
The Hwasan wetland vegetation is observed at mountain basin (644~780 m a.s.l.) where had become a potential land for indigenous people since prehistoric period. We phytosociologically investigated old-growth alder (Alnus japonica) forests using the $Z\ddot{u}rich$-Montpellier School's method and analyzed their spatial distribution pattern by actual vegetation map. Species performance was determined by using coverage and r-NCD. Viburnum opulus var. calvescens-Alnus japonica community syntaxonomically belonging to the Alnetea japonicae was first described and composed of three subunits: Salix koreensis subcommunity, typical subcommunity, and Pyrus ussuriensis subcommunity. Present plant community was compared with vicariant syntaxa such as Molinia japonica-Alnus japonica community, Rhamno nipponicae-Alnetum japonicae, and Aceri-Salicetum koreensis. Hwasan's alder forest, an alluvial terrace vegetation type on valley fan in the montane zone, is evaluated as vegetation class [I], which is a sort of benchmark plant community potentially on mountain wetlands in southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Simultaneously we suggested an establishment of the national strategy for habitat conservation free from hydrologically radical transform due to military utilization.

Little is known about foraging and roosting habitat of tree-roosting bats in Korea. In the present study, we studied on characteristics of foraging and roosting habitats by Ikonnikov's whiskered bats (Myotis ikonnikovi) in the South Korea, using trapping and radiotelemetry. We captured the bats at 15 sites during nights (foraging times) using mist-nets. Based on characteristic analyses of forests within a radius 500 m from each capture site, forests of M. ikonnikovi habitat are similar characteristics to the old-growth forests. They foraged at forests dominated by boradleaf stands which are older than than 30-year-old and thicker than 20 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH). We used radio-transmitters to locate and characterize day-roosts of Myotis ikonnikovi, and totally the roost use patterns of three bats were surveyed. They roosted in trees (both live and dead) with exfoliating bark, extensive vertical cracks, or cavities, and thier roosting sites were located about 500 m from the initial capture location. The bats had a number of roost in a short-distance, some used new roost every day and the same roost sometimes were used repeatedly. To increase the diversity of the tree-dwelling bats including Myotis ikonnikovi, management practices that the higher food and roost availablility can be sustained in forests are needed.

A study was conducted for indentifying the floral biodiversity of woody species by calculating four diversity indices using data collected from 4 stands of different age groups and disturbance regimes in two areas of Madhupur tract. Results showed that highest species diversity in the old growth secondary coppice forest (>60 years) under moderate anthropogenic disturbances of Madhupur National Park area (delete (D=0.74, H'=3.36) followed by old growth secondary forest stands (>40 years) under moderate disturbances at Bhawal National Park area (D=0.65, H'=2.81). Plant species diversity of the young enrichment plantations (<20 years and <15 years) under high anthropogenic disturbances in both the areas are much low (D=0.54 and H'=2.16 and D=0.52 and H'=1.92 respectively), which indicate high anthropogenic disturbances coupled with introduction of invasive exotics that are rival for endemic species are detrimental for conservation of biological diversity of tropical moist deciduous forests of Madhupur tract in Bangladesh.

Armillaria root disease affects forests around the world. It occurs in many habitats and causes losses in the infested stands. Weather conditions are important factors for growth and development of Armillaria species. Yet, the relation between occurrence of damage caused by Armillaria disease and weather variables are still poorly understood. Thus, we used generalized linear mixed models to determine the relationship between weather conditions of current and previous year (temperature, precipitation and their deviation from long-term averages, air humidity and soil temperature) and the incidence of Armillaria-induced damage in young (up to 20 years old) and older (over 20 years old) coniferous stands in selected forest districts across Poland. We used unique data, gathered over the course of 23 years (1987-2009) on tree damage incidence from Armillaria root disease and meteorological parameters from the 24-year period (1986-2009) to reflect the dynamics of damage occurrence and weather conditions. Weather parameters were better predictors of damage caused by Armillaria disease in younger stands than in older ones. The strongest predictor was soil temperature, especially that of the previous year growing season and the current year spring. We found that temperature and precipitation of different seasons in previous year had more pronounced effect on the young stand area affected by Armillaria. Each stand's age class was characterized by a different set of meteorological parameters that explained the area of disease occurrence. Moreover, forest district was included in all models and thus, was an important variable in explaining the stand area affected by Armillaria.
