Wood fibers for medium density fiberboard (MDF) was used in the filler layer of the white duplex board for increasing thickness and bulk of the board. The MDF fibers and the old corrugated container (OCC) furnish were refined, and mixed together to form paperboard. At optimum mixing ratios and refining degrees, stiffness and tensile strength of the MDF fiber-containing board were higher than those of the board with 100% OCC. It was found that there was possibility to reduced basis weight of the filler layer down to 90% of the all OCC furnish by judicious selection of the mixing ratio and the refining method of the MDF fibers. Drainage rate increase and potential drying energy savings were additional benefits.
AOCC로부터 ECF 표백이 가능한 펄프 (kappa no. 25이하, 수율 70%)를 생산하기 위한 증해조건은 활성알칼리 20%, 황화도 25%, Anthraquinone (AQ) 0.1%, 펄핑온도 $170^{\circ}C$, 증해시간 90분이다 (kappa no. 22.6, 수율 68%).
The increase of wet web solid content in wet pressing will save drying energy greatly. We applied wood flours as spacers to increase the old corrugated container (OCC) solid contents in wet pressing. The mixed furnish of OCC and wood flours of 3-5% (wt/wt) increased bulk and drainage rate, and by increasing wet pressing pressure, its solid content started to be higher than 100% OCC furnish at more than 50% solid content level. Addition of cationic starch and drainage aid to the mixed furnish increased solid content further up to around 2%. Cationic starch addition compensated or exceeded the loss of tensile and compressive strength caused by the addition of wood flour, but drainage aid did not. Cationic starch also improved the stretch of the OCC, which could mitigate cracking at folding in boxboard.
The increase of wet web solid content after wet press and dry compressive strength were observed in lab study by judicious application of wood flour and starch for the old corrugated container (OCC). Pearl starch was better than cationic starch in strength development, but cationic starch was better for drainage. Application of vacuum on the mixed solution of wood flour and starch helped strength development further without loss of other properties. The effect of wood flour addition on wet web solid content improved as the wet pressing pressure increased. The use of wood flour and starch mixture improved wet web solid contents further.
The base paper of corrugated board is mainly produced from Korean old corrugated container (KOCC), and thus the recycling rate of KOCC is very high. However, there is a problem that the pulp quality is very low while the recycling rate of OCC is high. The fines content in KOCC, the main source of the corrugated board, amounts to nearly the half of the total stock, and its formation increases as recycling process repeats due to the hornification of fiber. There have been attempts to improve the drainage property of OCC by increasing the headbox concentration of the paper machine or by applying drainage-promoting polymer additives. However, these conventional methods have problems of weakened paper strength and lowered converting fitness caused by paper formation hindrance. The strength of linerboard could not be increased in case KOCC is used, because hornified OCC pulp can-not be sufficiently refined due to the lowered drainage property caused by fines formation. We studied about a new technique consisting of froth-flotation for fractionating pulp stock into a long fiber portion and fines fraction. This study will be developed in order to enhance the drainage and strength properties of a recycled OCC pulp by selective treatment of flocculant on fractionated OCC Fines.
Wood fibers for medium density fiberboard (MDF) was used in the filler layer of the white duplex board for increasing thickness and bulk of the board. The MDF fibers were treated with ozone (3% based on dry weight of the fibers), and mixed together with OCC (old corrugated container) to form paper. Ozone-treated MDF fibers gave high bulk, high tensile strength, high internal bond and fast drainage to the furnish mixed with OCC. It was shown that there were possibilities to reduced basis weight of the filler layer without loss of thickness, stiffness, and tensile strength. Furthermore, it showed the possibility to develop a new kind of board product that has high stiffness as well as high strength properties with light basis weight by application of the ozone-treated MDF fibers.
The kind and the mixing ratio of recovered papers would affect the quality of final recycled paper. In this study, effects of the mixing ratio of various domestic recycled papers (old news print (ONP), old corrugated container (OCC) and coated paper (CP)) on variations in physical properties of paper and its productivity were investigated. When the mixing ratio of CP grade increased, the freeness (CSF) of recycled pulp was increased while paper strength and white water turbidity was decreased. Paper strength was decreased as the percentage of OCC was higher than ONP. When ONP was mixed with OCC, no adverse effect was observed except the increased drainage resistance. It is expected that these results could be utilized as fundamental data to establish regulations for the recovered paper grades according to mixing ratios of different kinds of them.
As the demands of environment protection increases, the pulp mold container is developed to substitute for EPS (expanded polystyrene) as a shock absorbing packaging material. The water-absorbing ratio and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and compressive strength of pulp mold are important factors to evaluate its shock absorbing characteristics. Influences of mixing ratios of ONP (old newspaper) and OCC (old corrugated container) on physical properties of pulp mold were investigated at various conditions of temperature and relative humidity. The optimum mixing ratio of ONP and OCC was also searched based on physical properties. The results showed that when relative humidity was increased from 60% to 90%, the water absorption ratio of pulp mold increased significantly, tensile strength decreased 20$\sim$30%, and compressive strength decreased 10$\sim$20%. In addition, the optimum mixing ratio of ONP and OCC was found to be 50%:50%.
As the demands of environment protection increase, the pulp mold container is developed to substitute for the plastic cushion materials like EPS(expanded poly styrene). The water-absorbing ratio, tensile strength and compressive strength of pulp mold are important factors to evaluate its shock absorbing characteristics. The study was performed to investigate the effects of the mechanical property changes on the various conditions of temperature and relative humidity for pulp mold containers made of mixed materials on ONP(old newspaper) and OCC(old corrugated container). This study also is evaluated the optimized mixing ratio of materials for making pulp mold by analyzing the changes of physical properties according to a various procured temperature and relative humidity conditions. The results show that the water absorption ratio of sample increased significantly, and tensile strength decreased $20{\sim}30%$, compressive strength decreased $10{\sim}20%$ by increasing relative humidity condition. And the results show that the ONP 50% and OCC 50% was optimized mixing ratio according to the samples.
Linerboards have been produced by recycling recovered paper such as old corrugated containers(OCC). Usually linerboards produced during summer season show weak strength compared with those of produced during winter. In order to cope with the weak strength of linerboards produced during summer, and to confirm uniform quality, it is important to understand the seasonal effect on strength properties. Effect of pulping temperature of the OCC for linearboard production was investigated by controlling pulping temperatures at $18^{\circ}C$ and $51^{\circ}C$. Low pulping temperature ($18^{\circ}C$) caused more generation of fines in stock. Consequently retention and drainage of linerboard defibrated at high pulping temperature ($51^{\circ}C$) were better than those of $18^{\circ}C$. Strength properties of handsheet at low pulping temperature were higher than those of high pulping temperature and it could be confirmed that low pulping temperature during winter is one reason of seasonal variation of recycled linerboard strength. It is considered that surface modification of OCC fibers by harsh pulping action during winter caused increase of paper strength.
