  • Two surveys were conducted in January 2006 and September 2007 with multibeam echosounder to investigate the dune shape, migration rate, and bedload transport rate using dune-tracking method on an offshore sand ridge at southern Gyeonggi Bay. The migration rates of dunes range from 1.8 $myr^{-1}$) to 56.0 $myr^{-1}$), at the upper northwestern side of sand ridge towards the southwest direction and from the center of the sand ridge towards the northeast direction respectively. Large (i.e. length 10-100 m) dunes show faster migration (0.3-23.4 $myr^{-1}$) ) than very large (i.e. length > 100 m) dunes because larger dunes have required a larger volume of sediments to be displaced. The decreases in dimensions and migration rates of dunes from the center of sand ridge to the lower part of southeastern side on the sand ridge can be ascribed to the decrease of sandy sediments availability, tidal currents with depth, and the coarsening of surface sediments from the crest of the sand ridge to the trough. Bedload transport rates on the basis of migration rates and dune dimensions decrease from 74.5 $m^2yr^{-1}$) at C transect to 35.6 $m^2yr^{-1}$) at R-02 transect.

  • This paper investigated the effect of W/C and the kinds of cement on the chloride invasion resistance of the offshore concrete. W/C set up 0.30, 0.35, 0.40 and The kinds of cement were used four(ordinary portland cement, ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement, belite cement, low heat portland cement). For the electrical migration test, NT BUILD 492's method was used to estimate the migration coefficient of chloride ion. As a result, the migration coefficients of chloride ion of concrete according to w/c were shown reducing with the w/c increasing, and according to kinds of cement were shown discrepancy in chloride invasion resistance. Especially blast-furnace slag cement was most low it. In the each cement, the compressive strength was shown related to the migration coefficient.

  • In this study, trends in research methods and topics of seabird and marine fish migration were examined. Based on the framework of existing animal migration studies, future research directions were proposed in relation to the migration of seabirds and fish. In terms of research methodology, with the development of science and technology, tracking techniques using radio telemetry, acoustic telemetry, RFID (radio-frequency identification), satellite tracking, and geolocators are widely used to study seabird and fish migration. Research is also conducted indirectly through a population survey and the analysis of substances in the body. Research contents are largely classified into extrinsic factors that affect migration(such as environmental variables and interspecific competition), intrinsic factors such as hormones, anthropogenic activities including fishery and offshore wind farm, and the effect of global climate change. In future studies, physiological factors that influence or cause migration and dispersal should be identified concerning intrinsic factors. For the analysis of migration ability, it is necessary to study effects of changes in the magnetic field on the migration ability of seabirds and fish, interspecific differences in spatiotemporal migration ability, and factors that influence the migration success rate. Regarding extrinsic factors, research studies on effects of anthropogenic disturbances such as fishery and offshore wind farm and global climate change on the migration and dispersal patterns of marine animals are needed. Finally, integrated studies on the migration of seabirds and fish directly or indirectly affecting each other in various ecological aspects are required.

  • Seasonal catch distributions of large purse seines and daily landings of coastal set nets were analyzed to understand the migration path of the Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius around Korean waters. The Spanish mackerel start to move toward the coastal region in the South and West Sea in May for spawning and stay until July, when spawning finishes. Afterwards, they start to migrate to the East China Sea and the southern East Sea and are found irrespective of the onshore and offshore regions. Therefore, they disappear from the offshore region during the spawning season in June and July, and a new recruitment population of age 0 begins to inflow into the coastal fishing grounds in the South Sea and West Sea in August, one month earlier than in the Japanese coastal region of the East Sea.

  • Gas hydrate has been attractive topic for two dedicates because it may cause the global warming, ocean hazards associated with the instability of marine slope due to the gas hydrate release as well as high potential of future energy resources. The study on gas hydrate in Ulleung basin has been performed since 1999 to explore the potential and distribution of gas hydrate offshore Korea. The numerous multi channel seismic data have been acquired and processed by Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). The results showed clearly the gas hydrate indicators such as pull up structure, bottom simulating reflector (BSR), seismic blanking zone. The prestack depth migration has been considered as fast and accurate technique to image the subsurface. In this paper, we will present both the conventional seismic data processing and apply Kirchhoff prestack depth migration for gas hydrate data set. The results will be applied for core sample collections and for proposal more detail 2D with long offset or 3D seismic exploration.

  • The mysids, Archaeomysis kokuboi and Acanthomysis sp., clearly exhibited the diel patterns of interspecific horizontal migration in the surf zone at a sandy shore in Yongil Bay, eastern Korea. Shoreward migration of Acanthomysis sp. at sunset resulted in the presence of significantly high numbers of mysids after dark at the bottom of 1 m depth. At first light, Acanthomysis sp. moved back to deeper water of>1 m depth in conjunction with a reverse migration by A. kokuboi. In the afternoon, A. kokuboi moved to offshore, then these species remained there. Although A. kokuboi has been considered an intertidal species in the exposed beaches with strong wave action, this is not the case in a sandy beach of Yongil Bay. We suggest that evidence for behavioral adaptation comes from the response of k. kokuboi to the sheltered beaches with weak wave action. The habitat shifts presumably provide this species with high availability of food materials in the surf zone.

  • To investigate the population structure and geographic distance among anchovies (Engraulis japonicus) in Korea, we compared and analyzed the mitochondrial DNA control region sequences (227 bp) of anchovies from 12 localities in inshore and offshore waters. The sequence analysis of 84 individuals showed 29 haplotypes, ranging in sequence divergence by pairwise comparisons from 0.3% to 3.5% (1 bp-12 bp). E9 haplotype of anchovies were found largely in inshore waters and also in offshore waters, which was regarded as the major source in Korean waters (58.3%). However, E26, E27, E28, and E29 haplotypes were found in westsouthern (locality 10, four among 7). Phylogenetic analysis using PHYLIP was divided into two clades (clade A and B). Most of the haplotypes, excluding E26, E27, E28, and E29, were strongly supported by bootstrap analysis (>75%), whereas the relationship between clade A and B was weakly supported by bootstrap analysis (51%). High levels of genetic diversity were found; haplotype diversity (H)=0.75-1.00, and nucleotide diversity $({\pi})=0.015-0.0244$. Analysis of $F_{ST}$ between populations in inshore waters ranged in 0.01-0.05, whereas those of offshore waters ranged in 0.01-0.58. A high gene flow occurred in inshore (Nm=22.61-34.22) and offshore (Nm=11.57-45.67) populations. The distribution of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes between westsouthern and other populations was suggestive of significantly different differentiation ($F_{ST}$=0.20-0.59, p<0.05; d=0.52, p=0.00; ${\phi}=0.02-0.41$, p<0.05). These results suggested that the overall anchovy population in the Korean peninsula caused considerable migration due to the mitochondrial gene flow between inshore and offshore populations to form a genetically homogenous and panmictic structure, although a heterogeneous population was found in this study.

  • Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) has been mostly caught by the Korean offshore large purse seine fishery in Korean waters. The annual catch of Pacific bluefin tuna caught by the offshore large purse seine fishery in Korean waters showed less than 1,000 mt until the 1990s except for 1997. The catch sharply increased to 2,401 mt in 2000 and recorded the highest of 2,601 mt in 2003, but the catch has generally decreased with a fluctuation thereafter. The main fishing ground of Pacific bluefin tuna of this fishery is formed around Jeju Island. However, it expanded to the Yellow Sea, the coastal of Busan, and the East Sea, which depends on the migration patterns of Pacific bluefin tuna by season. The CPUE standardization of Pacific bluefin tuna was conducted using Generalized Linear Model (GLM) to assess the proxy of the abundance index. The data used for the GLM were catch (weight), effort (number of hauls), catch ratio of Pacific bluefin tuna, moon phase by year, quarter and area. The standardized CPUE from 2004 to 2011, except for 2003 and 2010, showed a steady trend, and then increased until 2014. The CPUE in 2015 decreased, and in 2016 was higher than that in 2015. The result of GLM suggests that the effect of the catch ratio of Pacific bluefin tuna is the largest factor affecting the nominal CPUE.

  • This study was conducted to propose a reasonable requirement regulation of cutoff barriers composed of bottom layer and vertical barrier of offshore landfill for the prevention of contaminant leakage. The bottom layer was composed of impermeable clay layer; vertical walls were composed of double walls; outer wall was composed of steel sheet pile which registed against outer force; cutoff vertical barrier took the role of inner wall. Seepage-advection-dispersion numerical analysis was conducted using SEEP/W and CTRAN/W programs under steady and unsteady flows. The results showed that the values calculated under steady flow showed higher migration of pollutant than those of unsteady flow. The values calculated under steady flow are more valid from a design point of view. Under steady flow and the bottom clay layer and when the vertical barrier are homogeneous and completely well installed, respectively, the minimum required cutoff regulations for hydraulic conductivity, thickness, and embedded depth of the bottom clay layer and vertical barrier were suggested.

  • We report and discuss molecular and isotopic properties of hydrate-bound gases from 55 samples and void gases from 494 samples collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 at Hydrate Ridge offshore Oregon. Gas hydrates appear to crystallize in sediments from two end-member gas sources (deep allochthonous and in situ) as mixtures of different proportions. In an area of high gas flux at the Southern Summit of the ridge (Sites 1248-1250), shallow (0-40 meters below the seafloor (mbsf)) gas hydrates are composed of mainly allochthonous mixed microbial and thermogenic methane and a small portion of thermogenic C2+ gases, which migrated vertically and laterally from as deep as 2-2.5 km depths. In contrast, deep (50-105 mbsf) gas hydrates at the Southern Summit (Sites 1248 and 1250) and on the flanks of the ridge (Sites 1244-1247) crystallize mainly from microbial methane and ethane generated dominantly in situ. A small contribution of allochthonous gas may also be present at sites where geologic and tectonic settings favor vertical gas migration from greater depth (e.g., Site 1244).
