In the present work, high-speed video images of the ground take-off flight of a live butterfly were captured and their dynamic motions during the first full-stroke were analyzed. To capture the dynamic images of the take-off motion, the experimental setup consisted of a high-speed camera, a Xenon lamp as a light source and a transparent chamber of $15^W{\times}15^L{\times}17^H$$cm^3$ in physical size. The ambient temperature and supplementary lighting devices were precisely controlled. The weight and wing span of the butterfly tested in this study was 104 mg and 63.14 mm, respectively. The ground take-off images were captured with 4000 fps with a spatial resolution of (1024${\times}$512) pixels. The period of the first full-stroke was 80.5ms and the flapping speed of downstroke was 2 times faster than that of upstroke. As a result, butterflies used the fling and near-clap motion to generate lifting force and an interesting take-off behavior of early pronation and downstroke was observed.
In this paper, a novel method for wind speed estimation in wind power generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on estimating the wind speed using Support-Vector-Machines for regression (SVR). The wind speed is estimated using the generator power-speed characteristics as a set of training vectors. SVR is trained off-line to predict a continuos-valued function between the system's inputs and wind speed value. The predicted off-line function as well as the instantaneous generator power and speed are then used to determine the unknown winds speed on-line. The simulation results show that SVR can define the corresponding wind speed rapidly and accurately to determine the optimum generator speed reference for maximum power point tracking.
Gust factor is an important parameter for the conversion between peak gust wind and mean wind speed used for the structural design and wind-related hazard mitigation. The gust factor of typhoon wind is observed to show a significant dispersion and some differences with large-scale weather systems, e.g., monsoons and extratropical cyclones. In this study, insitu measurement data captured by 13 meteorological towers during a strong typhoon Morakot are collected to investigate the statistical characteristics, height and wind speed dependency of the gust factor. Onshore off-sea and off-land winds are comparatively studied, respectively to characterize the underlying terrain effects on the gust factor. The theoretical method of peak factor based on Gaussian assumption is then introduced to compare the gust factor profiles observed in this study and given in some building codes and standards. The results show that the probability distributions of gust factor for both off-sea winds and off-land winds can be well described using the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution model. Compared with the off-land winds, the off-sea gust factors are relatively smaller, and the probability distribution is more leptokurtic with longer tails. With the increase of height, especially for off-sea winds, the probability distributions of gust factor are more peaked and right-tailed. The scatters of gust factor decrease with the mean wind speed and height. AS/NZ's suggestions are nearly parallel with the measured gust factor profiles below 80m, while the fitting curve of off-sea data below 120m is more similar to AIJ, ASCE and EU.

High speed on-off electro-magnetic valves have been used for pressure control or flow control in automotive or construction machine servomechanisms. These systems require quicker valve switching speed to improve control preciseness. The authors designed and manufactured an electric valve driver with quick response characteristics by using 3 power source type valve driver concept. In experiments by using a hydraulic system incorporating the new valve driver, the new driver shortened the switching lag time from 5 ms to 1.3 ms. And also the new driver showed excellent position tracking control performances.

The successful design of several types of motorcycle power take off (M-pto) has opened possibilities for the use of a range of attachments matched to the power of the more popular motorcycle models in Asia. This paper reports on the implementation of the motorcycle power-take-off for low-speed and high speed applications utilizing some existing IRRI machines.
In this study, the performance of foil thrust bearings was investigated by performing bearing take-off and load capacity tests, using an in-house designed and manufactured vertical bearing test rig. The mean take-off rotational speed and maximum load capacity of the bearing specimen were ~18,000 rpm and ~80 kPa, respectively. The vertical bearing test rig was observed to yield higher coefficients of friction and frictional torques than a horizontal bearing test rig under identical test conditions. This was a result of its structural characteristics, in that the bearing specimen is placed atop the thrust runner, which keeps it from being separated from the runner after the bearing take-off. In addition, bearing take-off was observed at a higher runner rotational speed as this structure keeps air from flowing between the top foil and runner surfaces, which requires a higher runner speed. The parallel alignment between the bearing specimen and runner surfaces can be maintained within a certain range more easily in a vertical test rig than in a horizontal test rig. Because of these advantages, Korean Industrial Standard, KS B 2060, recommends a vertical bearing test rig as the standard test device for foil thrust bearings.

A SRG (Switched Reluctance Generator) has many advantages such as high efficiency, low cost, high-speed capability and robustness compared with other of machine. But the control methods that have been adopted for SRGs are complicated. This paper proposes a simple control method using the PID controller which only controls turn-off angles while keeping turn-on angles of SRG constant. In order to keep the output voltage constant, the turn-off angle for load variations is controlled by using linearity between the generated current and turn-off angle since the reference generated current can be led through the voltage errors between the reference and the actual voltage. The suggested control method enhances the robustness of this system and simplifies the hardware and software by using only the voltage and the speed sensors. The proposed method is verified by experiments.
In this paper, A fuzzy logic based turn-off angle compensator for torque ripple reduction in a linear switched reluctance motor is proposed. The turn-off angle, as a complex function of motor speed and current, is automatically changed for a wide speed range to reduce torque ripple. Simulation results are presented that show ripple reduction when the him-off angle compensator is used.
Lift-off means that the rotating journal surface separates from the leaf surface in an air-lubricated multi-leaf foil journal bearing. Lift-off builds up minimum film thickness which will provide load capacity between leaves and journal. In this paper an analysis of air-lubricated multi-leaf foil journal bearing was performed with effects of multi-leaf foil deflection and compressible lubrication equation simultaneously. Minimum film thickness built up versus journal speed predicts the lift off characteristics and these results will be useful in designing and selecting the proper speed of the air-lubricated multi-leaf foil journal bearing.

Micro On-Off valves are currently recognized as the core technology in the fields of the micro fluid chip fur medical applications and production lines of semi-conduct chip. Micro valves that operate by compressed air need the high-speed responsibility, repeatability, the absorbability and the uniform pressure by the poppet. In this study, Micro On-Off valves that posses the high-speed responsibility and the high rate of flow have designed and analyzed through the law of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. In case of poppet, Flow field characteristic was analyzed by the variation of poppet and it was able to display flow field by changing the location of the poppet. Also, we verified possibility of the design through the static and dynamic pressure and the 3D distribution curve of the force by working the front poppet.
