The coefficient of consolidation has been evaluated using the conventional oedometer tests based on the one-dimensional consolidation theory. In the field, however, the actual response of the soil will be subject to the three-dimensional condition during consolidation. In this research, a new method f3r estimating the coefficient of consolidation for various stress-deformation conditions was proposed. The good agreement between the computed dissipation of pore pressure and the measured data confirms the usefulness and the applicability of the proposed method to predict the exact rate of consolidation.
The behaviors of saturated soils such as compressibility and permeability are distinguished by preconsolidation stress. Preconsolidation stress becomes an important design parameter in geotechnical structures. The goal of this study is to introduce a new method for the evaluation of preconsolidation stress based on the shear wave velocity at small strain, using Busan, Incheon, and Gwangyang clays in Korea. Standard consolidation tests are conducted by using an oedometer cell equipped with bender elements. The preconsolidation stresses estimated by shear wave velocity are compared with those evaluated by the Casagrande, constrained modulus, work, and logarithmic methods. The preconsolidation stresses estimated by the shear wave velocity produce very similar values to those evaluated by the Onitsuka method (one of the logarithmic methods), which yields an almost real preconsolidation stress. This study shows that the shear wave velocity method provides a reliable method for evaluating preconsolidation stress and can be used as a complementary method.
Consolidation properties of Shihwa deposits were analysed by means of depositional environments. Depositional environments including particle size distributions, sediment structures, geochemical properties, porewater chemistries and carbon age dating were analysed using undisturbed samples retrieved successively from a boring hole in the study area. Laboratory oedometer tests and anisotropic consolidated triaxial tests (CKoUC) for undisturbed samples were performed to examine the overconsolidation phenomena. Based on the results of analysis of depositional environments, it was found that the upper silt/clay mixed layer was deposited under marine condition while underlying sand and clay layers were deposited under fluvial condition. Planar laminated structures of silts and clays were dominant in marine deposits. Although there was no clear evidences that geological erosion had occurred in marine deposits, overconsolidation ratios of the upper marine samples were greater than unity Stress Paths of the upper marine samples behaved similarly to those of normally consolidated clays. Data plotted in stress state charts showed that the marine deposits were normally consolidated in geological meaning. These apparent overconsolidation of the marine deposits can be explained by the structures i.e. chemical bonding due to the difference of the rate of deposition, not by geological erosions and ground water fluctuations.
Settlement analysis based on oedometer test results with or without Skempton-Bjerrum's modification method ( widely used for practical purposes when estimating consolidation settlements of soft clay deposits) has shortcomings that it cannot simulate real stress states and deformation behaviors of soils in case that in-situ loading and deformation conditions are not 1-dimensional. In this study, the stress path method, reflecting various probable stress paths, was employed to normally - consolidated kaolinite samples by using automated triaxial testing device which can control stress paths automatically. From this experimental study, elastic, consolidation, secondary compression and pore pressure development - dissipation behaviors under various stress paths were analyzed and deformation characteristics of soft clays, which can be the basis of rational estimation of settlements, were studied. Also by comparing results of stress path tests with those of 1-dimensional consolidation tests, limitations and problems of conventional methods were clarified.
To get improved soil parameters in the laboratory tests, the effects of sample disturbance should be excluded as much as possible. A collaborative research between Dong-A University and PHRI (Japan) was conducted to investigate the effects of sample disturbance due to sampling techniques and samplers on Pusan clays. The results of unconfined compression and consolidation tests performed on the clay samples taken by them have been compared in terms of soil parameters and sample disturbance. As the result of the study, it was found that when the Korean sampler was used with a different technique of cleaning the borehole bottom and removing slime before inserting and penetrating the sampler tube, similar to the one commonly used in Japanese practice, the quality of samples could be greatly improved. Furthermore, the CRS test with the rate of 0.02%/min yielded larger values of consolidation parameters and better degree of sample disturbance than those of oedometer test, due to the difference in testing method.
Using the results of the Piezocone Penetration Test(PCPT) which were executed at the Yangsan-Mulgum site, the applicability of the interpretation methods far estimating the OCR(Overconsolidation Ratio) of soft clay was evaluated. At the same time, the results from the laboratory tests using the total of 172 undisturbed soft clay samples taken from the 44 bore holes of the Yangsan-Mulgum site were used to compare the OCR values obtained from the consolidation test with those from the PCPT. The relationship between the predicted overconsolidation ratio($OCR_p$) using the PCPT and the measured overconsolidation ratio($OCR_c$) from the laboratory consolidation tests are investigated and presented in this study. The $OCR_p$ by using the Powell et al.'s method for non-fissured clay from the results of the PCPT shows the best relationship with the $OCR_c$ obtained from the laboratory consolidation test.
Consolidation characteristics of reclamated ground with dredged soil and methods of evaluating them are investigated in this paper. For a dredged and reclamated ground with a very high water content, self-weight consolidation being progressed, its consolidation characteristics are difficult to find since it is almost impossible to have a undisturbed sample. In order to overcome such a problem, methods of laboratory tests with disturbed sample were studied to obtain consolidation parameters required to analyze consolidation settlement in practices, using the conventional infinitesimal consolidation theory, were evaluated by carrying out various laboratory tests with disturbed soils such as oedometer test, constant rate of deformation test, Rowe-cell tests with ring diameters of 60 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm and the centrifuge model tests with 40 g-levels. Constitutive relations of void ratio - effective vertical stress - permeability were evaluated by using the inverse technique implemented with the finite strain consolidation theory and results of centrifuge model tests. Design soil parameters related to consolidation such as compression index, swelling index, coefficient of volume change and vertical and horizontal consolidation coefficients were proposed properly by analyzing the various test results comprehensively.
In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of secondary consolidation in the soft clay ground, oedometer tests were carried out in a normally consolidated condition, and the consolidation characteristics of the soft clay ground were examined by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) based on the Elasto-Viscous model proposed by Yoshikuni. The consolidation tests adjusted the consolidation load increment ratio(${\Delta}p/p_0$) to 1.0 for the four cases with initial consolidation pressures of 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 kgf/$cm^2$. The long-term consolidation tests were examined by the tests that changed the load increment ratio to clarify the effect of consolidation load increment. Although the numerical analysis was delayed in the primary consolidation process, from the result of the numerical analysis of the laboratory tests, the applicability of the Elasto-Viscous model was verified from the agreement of the secondary consolidation process. Based on the developing of model ground consist of general soft clay, influences of consoliation parameters on the consolidation characteristics were studied by the numerical analysis.
The sand layer deposited in clay is called a sand seam, which is formed by inflow of sands due to river flooding or slope failure in the middle of sinking and sediment of clay. When the sand seam exists in clay layer, the drainage direction changes from one way to both ways, and the time of consolidation may be reduced. However, it is not clearly proved due to lack of studies of sand seam and currently is not reflected in the design of soft soil improvement. As a fundamental study about sand seam, the oedometer tests and constant rate of strain tests with Rowe cell were conducted on clay specimens with sand seam. For tests, a frozen method was specially designed for making the sand seam. It was concluded that the test results showed the sand seam affects the coefficient of consolidation of clay. If the thickness of sand seam exceeds 0.05 times of specimen height, the sand seam works as drainage layer of pore water horizontally as well as vertically, and consequently the consolidation is accelerated.
There has been an increase in the investigation of deep sea sediments with a consequent increase in the amount of energy required to undertake these investigations. The geotechnical characteristics of Ulleung Basin sediment are explored by using depressurized specimens following methane production tests carried out on pressured core samples obtained at 2,100 m water depth and 110 m below sea floor. Geotechnical index tests, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope are conducted to identify the geotechnical index parameters, clay mineralogy, chemical composition, and microstructure of the sediments. Compressibility, and elastic and electromagnetic wave parameters are investigated for two samples by using a multi sensing instrumented oedometer cell. The strength chatracteristics are obtained by the direct shear tests. The dominant clay minerals are mostly kaolinite, illite, chlorite, and calcite. The SEM shows a well-developed flocculated structure of the microfossil. Void ratio, electrical resistivity, real permittivity, conductivity, and shear wave velocity show bi-linear behavior with the effective vertical stress: as the vertical effective stress increases. The friction angle obtained by the direct shear test is about $21^{\circ}$, which is similar to the value observed in the Ulleung Basin sediments. This study shows that the understanding of the behavior acting on the diatomaceous marine sediment is important because it often maintains the useful energy resources such as gas hydrate and so will be the new engineering field in the next generation.
