A series of one-dimensional consolidation tests and triaxial creep tests were performed on Nansha clays, which are interactive marine and terrestrial deposits, to investigate their time-dependent behaviour. Based on experimental observations of oedometer tests, normally consolidated soils exhibit larger secondary compression than overconsolidated soils; the secondary consolidation coefficient ($C_{\alpha}$) generally gets the maximum value as load approaches the preconsolidation pressure. The postsurcharge secondary consolidation coefficient ($C_{\alpha}$') is significantly less than $C_{\alpha}$. The observed secondary compression behaviour is consistent with the $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ concept, regardless of surcharging. The $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ ratio is a constant that is applicable to the recompression and compression ranges. Compared with the stage-loading test, the single-loading oedometer test can evaluate the entire process of secondary compression; $C_{\alpha}$ varies significantly with time and is larger than the $C_{\alpha}$ obtained from the stage-loading test. Based on experimental observations of triaxial creep tests, the creep for the drained state differs from the creep for the undrained state. The behaviour can be predicted by a characteristic relationship among axial strain rate, deviator stress level and time.
The is study is to evaluate the small strain shear modulus ($G_{max}$) of Busan clay using in-situ penetration tests. A series of dilatometer tests (DMT) and piezocone penetration tests (CPTu) are performed at Busan newport and Noksan sites, and hybrid oedometer tests are also carried out on the specimens obtained from both sites. The $G_{max}$ is evaluated from the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) measured by the bender elements installed at the boundary of oedometer cell. By analyzing these data, the relationship of $G_{max}$ and state variables, such as confined stress and void ratio, is developed. The analysis of lab and in-situ test results reveals that the ratio of $G_{max}$ to $q_t$ is inversely proportional to the plasticity index while the ratio of $G_{max}$ to $E_D$ has a linear relationship with ($I/I_D$)$(p_a/{\sigma}'_v)^{0.5}$. Two correlations suggested in this study, based on CPT and DMT results, appear to provide reasonable predictions of the small strain shear modulus.

The Repeated Load Triaxial and Oedometer Tests to the weathered granite & silty clay soil have been fulfilled to investigate their dynarnic characteristics. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. In the relation between the repeated triaxial compression and the oedometer test, the recoverable strain of weathered granite soil showed a tendency to decrease by the increase of the repeated loads number(N), and that of silty clay showed approximately constant values while the total strain increased continuously. 2. The changes of plastic strain was dependent to the level of deviator stress which is the most important element in the calculation of soil deformation under repeated load condition. And there was a significance of 10% between the level of stress and plastic strain. 3. When the soil was aimost dried or saturated to 100%, the deformation by the repeated loads was small. However the deformation showed peak around the saturation of 50%. 4. When the deformation was predicted by the repeated triaxial load tests of a laboratory, it is desirable to introduce the threshold stress concept in the calculation of deformation of subgrade of the pavement. 5. The improved design equation (Eq. 16) introducing the modulus of conversion(Fo), which is based on the Boussineq' s theory, is considered to be rational in the design of flexible pavement. From the above results, the deformation to the repeated traffic loads could be predicted by the repeated triaxial tests on the pavement materials or undisturbed soil layers, therefore it is think that the durable and econornic pavement could be constructed by reflecting that to the design.

Consolidation properties were analysed by means of depositional environments. Depositional environments including geochemical properties, porewater chemistry, sediment structures, particle size distributions and carbon age dating were analysed using undisturbed samples retrieved successively from a boring hole in the study area. Laboratory oedometer tests and anisotropic consolidated triaxial tests(CKoUC) were performed to examine the overconsolidation phenomenons. Based on the carbon age dating results and profiles of geochemical properties, porewater chemistry, salinity and pH, it was founded that the upper silt/clay complex layer was deposited under marine condition while sand and clay layers were deposited under fluvial condition. Planar laminated structures of silts and clays were dominant in marine deposits. Although there was no clear evidences that geological erosion had been occurred in marine deposits, overconsolidation ratio obtained from oedometer tests were greater than unity. Stress paths of samples behaved similar to those of normally consolidated clays. Data plotted in stress state charts proposed by Burland(1990) and Chandler(2000) showed that the marine deposits were geologically normally consolidated. These apparent overconsolidations can be explained by the fabric and chemical bonding due to the difference of the rate of deposition.
Because the hydraulic/mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soil is more complicated than that of saturated soil, one of the most important issues in modelling unsaturated soil is to properly couple its stress-strain relationship with its water retention characteristics. Based on the results of a series of tests, the stress-strain relationship and the changes in suction and saturation of unsaturated completely decomposed granite (CDG, also called Masado) vary substantially under different loading/hydraulic conditions. To precisely model the hydraulic/mechanical behaviour of unsaturated Masado, in this study, the superloading concept was firstly introduced into an existing saturated/unsaturated constitutive model to consider the structural influences. Then a water retention curve (WRC) model considering the volumetric change in the soil, in which the skeleton and scanning curves of the water retention characteristics were assumed to shift in parallel in accordance with the change in the void ratio, was proposed. The proposed WRC model was incorporated into the constitutive model, and the validity of the newly proposed model was verified using the results of tests conducted on unsaturated Masado, including water retention, oedometer and triaxial tests. The accuracy of the proposed model in describing the stress-strain relationship and the variations in suction and saturation of unsaturated Masado is satisfactory.
The flat dilatometer(DMT) has been practically used as an in-situ test equipment. It is a simple, rapid and cost-effective tool to characterize the in-situ stress-strain-strength properties of various types of ground materials. However, the results of flat DMT should be validated with considerable data with respect to the known reference values for a specific site. In this study, the applicability of existing relationships which were established for other local deposits is verified by performing the tests in several clay deposits. To compare with the DMT results, field vane tests and cone penetration tests were also carried out in the same field as reference tests, and unconsolidated undrained tests, oedometer tests, and other fundamental material properties tests were conducted on the thin-walled tube samples in the laboratory. The results of the flat DMT combined with empirical correlations are used to estimate soil types, unit weights, coefficients of lateral earth pressure at rest, overconsolidation ratios, constrained moduli and undrained shear strengths of three clay local deposits. It was found that various geotechnical properties estimated from the flat DMT generally well agree with those from the reference tests.
The main advantage of incremental loading consolidation test is the simplicity of equipments that can be used. However, it is known that the incremental loading test has several deficiencies including long testing time, non-uniform stress state, high and variable rates of strain, very soft clay and problem of back pressure saturation. Due to these drawbacks, various testing methods including constant rate of strain consolidation test(CRS) were developed. In this paper, CRS consolidation test was performed with three different strain rate. The results were verified by the modified CRS theory of Wissa et al.(1971). And then the results obtained from the CRS consolidation tests were compared with those from incremental loading test and direct permeability test.
The consolidation behavior of soft clay is controlled mainly by its compressibility and deformation characteristics. Soil permeability depends on various soil characteristics, including the soil type and anisotropy. The coefficient of permeability of soft clay is determined by using a laboratory test (the Oedometer test) or a piezocone test. The latter test is useful for estimating the permeability characteristics from $c_h$ and $k_h$ by performing an excess pore-pressure dissipation test. This study seeks to validate an existing theoretical formula in applying it to marine clay, and to assess the relation between $k_h/k_c$ and the mechanical properties of soft clay. Piezocone tests and laboratory tests were performed using sediment from the Yellow Sea and from the South Sea near Korea. We compared $k_h/k_v$ values obtained using the piezocone test and using laboratory consolidation tests. The obtained values are similar to the values obtained by Jamiolkowski et al. (M application); therefore, the latter values are recommended to be used as $k_h/k_v$.
Compressibility of the marine clay was mainly studied velocity of consolidation and numerical analysis by this time but studies of reevaluated from the field measurement data was a little. For last three years, areal fills and extensive field instrumentations including settlement and pore water pressure were performed in the site of the Youngsan River estuary site, South Korea. From the settlement data, field consolidation curves for sub-layers were reconstructed. Effective surcharge loads during the staged loadings were calculated using the fill heights and the excess pore water pressures in the ground. In the numerical analysis (PLAXIS), prefabricated vertical drains were also simulated. Laboratory, field, and numerical analysis showed good agreements in compressibility. Due to different conditions and limitations of the clay was the same range of the oedometer tests.
The coefficient of consolidation of clay deposit is one of the most important properties in the design of ground improvement. The in-situ value of $c_h$ is generally estimated by pore pressure dissipation using piezocone. Many researchers have suggested theoretical formula for its estimation. This study attempts to find out the validity of the existing theoretical formula in Korea and to find out the characteristics of $c_h$ related to the mechanical properties of clay. Piezocone tests and laboratory tests were performed at the site of pilot project of ground improvement at Yangsan-Mulgeum, Gyeongnam. Comparison of the estimated values of $c_h$using piezocone tests results and those from laboratory consolidation tests are carried out. Results show that Torstensson(cylindrical cavity theory) and Teh & Houlsby solutions derive similar values of $c_h$. And $c_h$ from oedometer test shows values similar to the above two methods. The value from either of the above two methods[Torstensson(cylindrical) or Teh & Houlsby] is recommended to be used as $c_h$.
