  • In the coastal region of Korea, historical tide harmonic constants were collected. Long-term tides and short-term tides observed by the KHOA were analyzed by a tide harmonic analysis method. Based on the harmonic constants, tidal characteristics such as tide asymmetry in Korean coastal waters were investigated. The harmonic constants obtained from the long-term tide data in the western coast have been used to show the relation between tide variation and reclamation project. $M_2$ amplitudes in the western coast have been decreased and $M_2$ phases were faster. $M_4$ amplitudes also were reduced and $M_4$ phases were faster in overall. In Mokpo and Kunsan tidal nonlinearity is relatively conspicuous. Overall, non-linearity of tidal currents is higher in the tidal channels flowing fast. The tidal non-linearity has increased by the development projects including large reclamation. The flood dominant characteristic in the northern and central part of Korean western coastal waters and the ebb dominant characteristic in the southern part have been intensified. The construction of Saemangeum sea dike has significantly changed the tidal characteristic in Korean western coastal waters.

  • Tide-surge characteristics of the West/South domestic coasts were analyzed with a tool of EST (empirical simulation technique). As a result, stations of Incheon, Gunsan, Mokpo and Busan are categorized as tide-dominant coasts, while Yeosu, Tongyoung and Busan are as surge-dominant coasts. In the tide-dominant coasts, extreme sea level of less than 50-yr frequency is formed without typhoon-surge, while only 10-yr extreme sea level is formed in the surge-dominant coasts. As the results of casual condition of extreme sea level formation considering the relative degree of surge on tide, the regional characteristics were detected also. Three methods for estimating the design tide level were compared. The AHHW method shows an unrealistic outcomes of the concern of over estimate design. Furthermore, the probability distribution function method has been concerned as causing missing data if a huge typhoon occurs in a neap tide or a low tide. To cope with these drawbacks, the applicability of the EST method is proved to be suitable especially in tide-dominant coasts.

  • A study on estimation of the datum level is carried out by combining observed and simulated harmonic constants of 4 major tides ($M_2$tide, $S_2$tide, $K_2$tide, and $O_1$tide). In the coastal zone, the datum level can be estimated by using observed tide harmonic constants at tide station. The observed tide harmonic constants, however, cannot be used to calculate the datum level of the sea because of the lack of tide station. In order to estimate the datum level of the sea, it is necessary to adopt the simulated harmonic constants instead of the observed ones. In this study, the datum level is calculated by using the simulated harmonic constants which is modified by tuning coefficient based on relationship between observed and simulated harmonic constants at tide station. Tuning coefficient of sea is interpolated on TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network) which has node points at tide stations.

  • In order to understand the flow properties of the South Sea of Korea, tidal currents, wind-driven currents, density-driven currents and residual flows were investigated by using 3-dimensional numerical model(POM). In offshore regions, tide-induced residual current tends to flow eastward during the spring tide and westward during the neap tide. Total residual flow is irregular due to the bottom topography in the coastal area. The density-driven currents in the coastal area showed to be relatively weak, with little seasonal differences. The special tendency was apparent in the open sea. That is, the flow in the offshore regions showed results similar to that of the Tsushima current. The wind-driven currents in the coastal area showed to be much stronger than in offshore regions. Vertically, the flow of the surface layer was much stronger than that of the bottom layer. Through these results, material transport and diffusion in the south coast, as a basis for predicting the spread of use is expected to be available.

  • EST has been applied to the East Coast to estimate extreme sea levels. Surge heights induced by 51 typhoons which have occurred last 60 years were calculated by ADCIRC model. The training set which is consist of surge heights by both typhoon and monsoon was constructed. The maximum surge height of the year excluding the one by typhoon is considered to be the surge height by monsoon. High/low tide conditions and spring/neap tide conditions were considered for constructing input vectors of typhoon and monsoon, respectively. The annual tide is also considered in response vectors for each case. The result is in accord with Jeong et al. (2008), which implies validity of the present study.

  • Analysis has been made on the tide/storm surges characteristics near the Korean marginal seas in the 2008 and 2009 years using operational ocean prediction model of the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA). In order to evaluate its performance, its results were compared with the observed data by tidal stations around Korean Peninsula. The model used in this study predicts very well the characteristics of tide/storm surges near the Korean Peninsula. Simulated storm surges show the evident effects of Typhoons in summer season. The averaged root mean square error(RMSE) of 48 hr forecasting between the modeled and observed storm surges are 0.272 and 0.420 m in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Due to strong sea winds, the highest storm surges heights was found in summer season of 2008, however, in 2009, the high storm surges heights was also found in other seasons. When Typhoon Kalmaegi(2008) and Morokot(2009) approached to Korean Peninsular, the accuracy of model predictions is almost same as annual mean value but the precision accuracy for Typhoon Morakot is lower than of Typhoon Kalmaegi similar to annual results.

  • Measurements of ocean color from space since 1970s provided vital information with reference to physical and biogeochemical properties of the oceanic waters. The utility of these data has been explored in order to map and monitor highly toxic/or harmful algal blooms (HABs) that affected most of coastal waters throughout the world due to accelerated eutrophication from human activities and certain oceanic processes. However, the global atmospheric correction and bio-optical algorithms developed for oceanic waters were found to yield false information about the HABs in coastal waters. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential use of red tide index (RI) method, which has been developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2005), for mapping of HABs in Korean and neighboring waters. Here we employed the SSMM to remove the atmospheric effect in the SeaWiFS image data and the achieved indices by RI method were found more appropriate in correctly identifying potential areas of the encountered HABs in Korean South Sea (KSS) and Chinese coastal waters during 1999-2004. But the existence of high absorbing and scattering materials greatly interfered with the standard OC4 algorithm which falsely identified red tides in these waters. In comparison with other methods, the RI approach for the early detection of HABs can provide state managers with accurate identification of the extent and location of these blooms as a management tool.

  • The tidal propagation for the Southeast Asian Seas is described via a high-resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamic model by the equilibrium tide and co-oscillating tide at the Straits. Computed tidal distributions of four major semidiurnal tides (M$_2$, S$_2$, $K_2$, $N_2$) and four major diurnal tides (K$_1$, $O_1$, P$_1$, Q$_1$) are presented and results are also compared with coastal observations archived in IHO global tidal data base (Canadian Marine Environmental Data Service) and existing tidal charts including Schwiderski GOTD(Global Ocean Tidal Data) maps.

  • This study is analyzed the optical property of red tide pixel by using Landsat-7 ETM+, Landsat-8 OLI and COMS/GOCI image. In order to sample red tide pixel, Landsat-7, 8 true color image were used and obtained coordinate of red tide pixel in the true color image. Normalized water leaving radiance(nLw) and absorption coefficient were obtained from GOCI image in the same coordinate of the true color image. When red tide was not occurred the main absorption range was 412nm and 660nm but when red tide occurred it was 660nm and absorption coefficient in 412nm are drastically reduced. It made no difference of nLw spectrum between red tide pixel and non red tide pixel in nLw, but the absolute value of nLw was low than non red tide pixel, especially 660nm and 680nm wavelength sharply decrease.

  • In marine salvage, extreme tide heights and tidal currents are necessary to anchor an accidental ship. In order to meet this requirement, a simple scheme was developed which yields the spatial informations on the extreme tide from the distribution of approximate highest astronomical tide heights using a relationship between extreme and highest astronomical tides at the standard port. This method is the inference method based on horizontally homogeneity of tide. This scheme was applied to estimate extreme tide heights and tidal currents in the Namhae (southern sea of Korea). The highest astronomical tide heights are computed by amplitude of four major constituents (M2, S2, K1, O1 tide). The estimated extreme tide heights are ranged from 70 to 260 cm for return period 50 years and from 80 to 270cm for return period 100 years, respectively. For return period 100 years, extreme tidal currents show value of 1.55 times as strong as those of normal state.
