A New Record of Epizoic Hydroid, Ectopleura radiata (Hydrozoa: Anthoathecata: Tubulariidae), from Korea

  • In 2022, during a survey of intertidal fauna around Jindo located in the Dadohaehaesang National Park in the South Sea, epizoic hydroids attaching onto seagrass (Zostera sp.) growing on soft sediments were collected. Through taxonomic examination, an unrecorded species, Ectopleura radiata, is newly added to the hydrozoan fauna of Korea. In addition, DNA barcoding for species from Ectopleura and Tubularia clarified the distinction among morphologically indistinguishable species without gonophores. Up to now, only one species, E. crocea, has been reported in Korea. Through this study, a total of two species belonging to genus Ectopleura have been reported in Korean waters so far.

Additional Description of the Vent Scale Worm Thermopolynoe branchiata (Polychaeta: Polynoidae) from the North Fiji Basin

  • Thermopolynoe Miura, 1994 is a monotypic genus in Lepidonotopodinae that comprises species endemic to chemosynthesis-based ecosystems. Here, we examined T. branchiata collected from the hydrothermal vents in the North Fiji Basin. For the first time in Thermopolynoe, we report sexual dimorphism detecting nephridial papillae on segments 11-13 in males, additionally describe the morphology on elytra with round to conical microtubercles on the surface, and distinguish presence of small neuropodial lobes on segments 3-26. We also revised couple of errors and ambiguities in the original description: incongruence between the description and figure and existence of individual variation in ratio of tentacular cirri and palps. In addition, three COI sequences of T. branchiata specimens from the North Fiji Basin were newly obtained and sequences divergence with other Lepidonotopodinae species were determined. These results would contribute to the taxonomy of polynoids in a chemosynthesis-based ecosystem.

  • 37개 지점으로부터 채집된 약 500개체의 한국산 바다거미류를 조사한 결과 13 속 30종이 구별되었다. 이중 4 종 (Ammothella monotuberculata, Ascrobhynchus stocki, Paranymphon magnidigitum 및 Cheilopallene nodulosa)은 신종이며 종명미상의 1 종을 포함한 6종이 한국내 미기록종인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 불가사리에 기생하는 Decachela dogieli Losina-Losinsky 에 대해서도 기록하였다.

Some Free-Living Heterotrophic Flagellates from Marine Sediments of Tropical Australia

  • The diversity of heterotrophic flagellates was examined at marine sediments around Cape Tribulation, Australia. The species described belong to the Alveolates, Apusomonadiae, Cercomonadida, Choanoflagellida, Cryptomonadida, Diplomonadida, Euglenozoa incertae sedis, Kathablepharidae, Kinetoplastida, Pedinellids, Stephanopogonidae, Stramenopiles, Stramenopiles incertae sedis, Thaumatomonadidae and Protista incertae sedis. Among the 51 species from 38 genera encountered in this study is one new taxon: Glissandra similis n. sp., and two new names are introduced: Goniomonas abrupta (Skvortzov 1924) nomen nodum and Cercomonas skvortzovi (Skvortzov 1977) nomen nodum. There was little evidence for endemism because most flagellates including one new taxon described here have been reported.

  • A pagurid hermit crab, Pagurixus patiae collected from Hyung-ge Island, Busan, southern Korea is newly recorded into the Korean fauna. Pagurixus patiae is the only species of the genus recorded in Korea. Morphological descriptions of P. patiae are provided.

  • The Korean populations of Z. marina are typically distributed in patches. Although molecular and biochemical approaches are now increasingly being applied to address the taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships within the animals, plants, and other algal species in Korea (Huh 1998; Hwang et at. 1998; Huh 2001), no population genetic studies of this species have been conducted.   • Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood of the freshwater crucian carp(Carassius carassius) from Kunsan in Korea, representing genetic similarity by polymerase chain reaction amplification of DNA as twelve of arbitrary primers. The electrophoretic analysis of polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNAs(PCR-RADP) products showed the high levels of similarity between different individuals in crucian carp.

'Bring to Lab' of 19 Novel Species Among 60 Isolates Retrieved from a Freshwater Pond

  • We report here on the cultivation of numerous novel bacterial species from a eutrophic freshwater pond. A total of 60 strains, 15 strains per each culture medium, were obtained from the surface of a eutrophic freshwater pond by employing a conventional dilution-plating method with four different kinds of culture media, including R2A, 1/10R2A, PCA, and 1/10PCA. Among the 60 strains isolated, 27 strains showed less than 97% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to validly published species, and thus they are considered to comprise 19 novel species. Of the 27 strains assigned to the novel species, the majority of the strains (20 strains) were affiliated with the Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria. The remaining 7 strains were affiliated with the Gammaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Deinococci. Because we have isolated 19 novel species from a usual freshwater pond using a conventional culturing technique, our results suggest that an unexplored ecosystem, even if it looks like a common ecosystem found elsewhere, harbors diverse unidentified microbes, which will be definitely further characterized.

Evaluation of North Pacific Intermediate Water Simulated by HadGEM2-AO (HadGEM2-AO의 북태평양 중층수 모의 성능 평가)

  • We analyzed the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) that was simulated in 25 coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) using historical and Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) scenario experiments of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), focusing on the evaluation of the performance of HadGEM2-AO. A large inter-model diversity in salinity, density, and depth of the NPIW exists even though the multi-model ensemble mean (MME) is comparable to observations. It was found that the depth of the NPIW tends to be deeper in the models in which the NPIW is relatively saltier. HadGEM2-AO simulates the lightest NPIW having the lowest salinity at shallower depth, compared with other CGCMs. Future projections of the NPIW show that the temperature of the NPIW increases, but the density decreases in all CMIP5 models. It was shown that the salinity of the NPIW decreases in most models and the decrease tends to be larger in models simulating the lighter NPIW. The HadGEM2-AO projects moderate changes in the temperature and density of the NPIW out of the CMIP5 models.
