  • This study investigates the characteristic of the Tsushima Warm Current from an assimilated high resolution global ocean prediction model, $1/12^{\circ}$ Global HYbrid Coordiate Ocean Model (HYCOM). The model results were verified through a comparison with current measurements obtained by acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) mounted on the passenger ferryboat between Busan, Korea, and Hakata, Japan. The annual mean transport of the Tsushima Warm Current was 2.56 Sverdrup (Sv) (1 Sv = $10^6m^3s^{-1}$), which is similar to those from previous studies (Takikawa et al. 1999; Teague et al. 2002). The volume transport time series of the Tsushima Warm Current from HYCOM correlates to a high degree with that from the ADCP observation (the correlation coefficient between the two is 0.82). The spatiotemporal structures of the currents as well as temperature and salinity from HYCOM are comparable to the observed ones.

  • The diffuse attenuation coefficient for down-welling irradiance ($K_d$) is an important parameter for ocean studies including remote sensing applications. For the vast ocean, ocean color remote sensing is the only possible means to get the fine-scale measurements of $K_d$. To develop a technique of estimating $K_d$ from remotely sensed data, the following underwater optical parameters (absorption coefficient (a), attenuation coefficient (c), scattering coefficient (b), diffuse attenuation coefficient ($K_d$), etc.) have been studied. For this research we conducted the field campaign around the Yellow Sea at $8{\sim}9$ June, 2006. We obtained a set of underwater optical parameter data: down-welling irradiance ($E_d$), up-welling irradiance ($E_u$) and up-welling radiance ($L_u$) using TriOS optical sensors and a, c coefficient using Spectral Absorption and Attenuation Meter (AC-S). We then derived $K_d$ values from $E_d$ for each depth.

  • We identify two distinct finer-scale frontal bands: 'Mainland China Coastal Front' (MCCF) and 'Kuroshio Front' (KF). The MCCF is along the 50-m isobath with large temperature gradient. The front is a boundary between the Mainland China Coastal Current and the offshore shelf waters. On the other hand, the KF is extending from the northeastern coast of Taiwan toward the northeast and into the shelf of south ECS. It forms a broad semicircle-shape and curving along 100-m isobath, it also deviates from eastward at around 26.5N-122E and leaves the shelf of ECS. This front should be the boundary between the Kuroshio water and the other shelf waters.

  • Recently, various efforts have been made to develop oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean. It is very important to consider the load caused by ice in designing floating structures in the area. The magnitude of the ice load and its impact on a structure should be considered. In this paper, we analyze ice parameters affecting the DP performance of FPSO with a DP-assisted mooring system. Several ice characteristics are selected, and the resulting ice load is calculated using GEM software. Numerous simulations are conducted while changing the values of the parameters, and DP capability plots are generated to visualize the effects of changing these parameters. It is shown that the ice drift speed and thickness are the major properties to be considered in DP system design. The limitations of the analysis and future work are discussed in the conclusion.

  • Linear and nonlinear motion responses of a Tension Leg Platform(TLP) was investigated by model tests. The model tests were carried out at KRISO's Ocean Engineering Basin which has a deep pit of which diameter and depth are 5 meters and 12.5 meters, respectively. Optical sensors were used for measuring drift motions, and a set of accelerometers were employed for analyzing wave frequency motions. ISSC TLP was chosen as the model for the present study. Scale ratio was 1/65 and elastic modelling of tether system were conducted. Very good agreement was obtained between experimental results and theoretical calculations not only in linear motion responses but tension responses, nonlinear wave drift force and double frequency excitations.

  • The preliminary design of a deep-sea injection system for carbon dioxide ocean sequestration is performed. Common functional requirements for a deep-sea injection system of mid-depth type and lake type are determined, Liquid transport system, liquid storage system and liquid injection system are conceptually determined for the functional requirements. For liquid injection system, the control of flow rate and temperature of liquid $CO_2$ in the injection pipe is needed in the view of internal flow. The function of depressing VIV(Vortex Induced Vibration) is also required in the view of dynamic stability of the injection pipe. A case study is performed for $CO_2$ sequestration capacity of 10 million tons per year. In this study, the total number of injection ships, the flow rate of liquid $CO_2$ and the configuration of a injection pipe are designed. The static structural analysis of the injection pipe is also performed. Finally the preliminary design of a deep-sea injection system is proposed.

  • The mobility of tracked vehicles is mainly influenced by the interaction between the tracks and soil. When the track of a tracked vehicle rotates, there will be a slip effect between the track and the soil, which creates a track shear force and the vehicle’s driving force. In this paper, the modeling of a working tool such as a trenching cutter and a tracked vehicle that is the lower frame of a track-based operating robot was performed. In addition, a numerical simulation was executed to verify the performance of the design objectives and the motion characteristics of the combined system.

  • We evaluate the temperature and salinity fields in the East Sea reproduced by the global ocean reanalysis data using HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM for short). Temporal correlation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) change between HYCOM and the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) are higher in summer than winter. Though distributions of temperature and salinity in the HYCOM are similar to those from historical data (World Ocean Atlas 2013 V2), salinity in the HYCOM is lower (highter) in the region where the salinity is high (low). Temperature fields in the Ulleung basin of HYCOM are quite similar to those derived from Pressure-recording Inverted Echo Sounder (PIES), such as the correlation coefficient is higher than 0.7. This indicates that the HYCOM represents well the circulation and meso-scale phenomena in the Ulleung basin.

  • Sediment plumes arising from various coastal works can cause detrimental effects on the coastal ecosystem in various manners. Although the most active countermeasure against the plumes is to restrict the works to specified time periods known as environmental windows (Reine et al., 1998), silt screens have been widely used for reducing the spreading of suspended sediments (SS) generated by coastal works. • Axial vibration analysis is very important for a deep-seabed mining system. In this study, an axial vibration analysis was carried out to estimate the natural frequencies and tensions of the umbilical cable using experimental data obtained from the first pre-pilot mining test. The axial vibrations of the umbilical cable with a pilot mining robot at the bottom end were analytically determined. The range of the added mass coefficients of the pilot mining robot is estimated by comparing the experimental and analytical data. The natural frequencies and maximum tensions are calculated using four estimated added mass coefficients.
