  • A nearshore current or a wave-induced current is an important phenomenon in a nearshore zone, which is composed of longshore, cross-shore, and rip currents. The nearshore current is closely related to the occurrence of coastal accidents by beachgoers. A considerable number of coastal accidents by beachgoers involving the rip current have been reported at Jungmun Beach. However, in studies and observations of the nearshore current of Jungmun Beach, understanding of the rip current pattern remains unclear. In this study, a scientific approach is taken to understand the nearshore current and the rip current patterns at Jungmun Beach by numerical computation for year of 2015. From results of numerical computation, the occurrence and spatial characteristics of the rip current, and the similarities between the rip current and incident wave conditions are analyzed. The primary results of this study reveal that the rip currents are frequently generated at Jungmun Beach, especially in the western parts of the beach, and that the rip currents often occur with a wave breaking height of around 0.5 ~ 0.7 m, a wave period of around 6 ~ 8 seconds, and a breaking angle of around 0 ~ 15 degrees.

  • A hybrid damage monitoring scheme using parallel acceleration-impedance approaches is proposed to detect girder damage and support damage in steel plate-girder bridges which are under ambient train-induced excitations. The hybrid scheme consists of three phases: global and local damage monitoring in parallel manner, damage occurrence alarming and local damage identification, and detailed damage estimation. In the first phase, damage occurrence in a structure is globally monitored by changes in vibration features and, at the same moment, damage occurrence in local critical members is monitored by changes in impedance features. In the second phase, the occurrence of damage is alarmed and the type of damage is locally identified by recognizing patterns of vibration and impedance features. In the final phase, the location and severity of the locally identified damage are estimated by using modal strain energy-based damage index methods. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a steel plate-girder bridge model which was experimentally tested under model train-induced excitations. Acceleration responses and electro-mechanical impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of girder damage and support damage.

  • A series of laboratory experiments has been performed in order to investigate the behavior of water-air two-phase flow in a horizontal pipe. A conductivity meter has been applied to detect the irregular alternation of air at the specific points in flows. The experimental condition has been established according to the water and air flowrates. Passing time, which is the time length for a measuring probe to pass through the entire length of a specific bubble, has been defined to evaluate the size of bubbles in the flow. Passing length, which can be considered as the equivalent value to bubble size and determined from the product of passing time and cross-sectional averaged velocity, and its corresponding occurrence frequency have been analyzed to classify the air flow patterns according to the condition of air and water fluxes. From the result, the dependancy of flow patterns on the variation of air-water flux ratio has been investigated and the existence of thresholds also checked for classifying the behavior of air in the flow.

  • This paper aims to describe the relation between the weather condition, especially typhoon and a shipwreck in Korean waters. For this study, it was investigated the statistical characteristics of a shipwreck due to the weather, pressure patterns governing the shipwreck in Korean waters. and the relation between the intensity of typhoon and the amount of a disaster. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The monthly occurrence frequency of a shipwreck was the heighest in July followed by February, March in descending order. 2) The pressure patterns governing the shipwreck were classified broadly into six types and pressure pattern which had most occurrence frequency of a shipwreck was Type V and then cames Type I, Type III and type IV in that order. 3) Occurence frequency of a shipwreck and the amount of a kinetic energy of typhoon have nothing to do with each other. In case of Wind-Typhoon that brought more a strong wind than a heavy rainfall, there were seriously affected ships and buildings by the wind.

  • The seasonal distribution and abundance of larval fishes in the central and southern surface waters of the East Sea were investigated seasonally during 2011 and 2012. During the study period, the larvae of 39 species belonging to 26 families were collected. The most abundant species were Engraulisjaponicus, which accounted for 97.5% of the total number of individuals collected. Scomber japonicus, Clupea pallasii, Chromis notatus, Cottidae sp., and Coryphaena hippurus accounted for 1.7% of the total. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the season. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in September and May, respectively. The larvae of the main species displayed a distinct spatial distribution and seasonal occurrence patterns. E. japonicus and C. notatus widely distributed throughout the study area. During summer and autumn, S. japonicus and C. hippurus were abundant in southern and offshore regions. C. pallasii occurred only in the southern region during winter. The seasonal occurrence and patterns of distribution of the larvae of main species seems were correlated with surface water temperature.

  • Species composition and seasonal change were examined monthly with shrimp assemblage caught in the coastal waters of Solido, Korea. Samplings were conducted in Solido using a beam trawl from June 2000 to May 2001. In the study period, a total of 16 species of shrimp belonging to six families were collected. Species was dominated by Palaemon gravieri, Crangon hakodatei, Trachysalambria curvirostris and Metapenaeus joyneri. Higher abundance of shrimp occurred in September and November, and lower abundance in June. Species diversity was reached its maximum (0.82) in November and its minimum (0.06) in January. Shrimp species in the study area can be grouped into three groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident, seasonal and temporary species.

  • In the aquaculture industry, few studies are analyzing big data for intrinsic meaning. Fishcare Laboratory (www.fishcare.kr) diagnostic data from 2016-2018 was analyzed for scuticociliatosis (caused by Miamiensis avidus) outbreak patterns in cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Jeju, Korea. The scuticociliatosis monthly occurrence ratio is reported in the summary table after preparing and filtering the basic dataset model. Nonparametric test results suggest differences in the water temperature, body length, and weight between groups with and without scuticociliatosis. Data distribution visualization revealed that shorter body length and lighter weight increased the occurrence of scuticociliatosis. The association rule mining technique was applied to determine the primary clinical signs of mixed scuticociliatosis and bacterial infections. Venn diagrams were used to report clinical signs and suggest commonalities. These results may help diagnose and treat fish and provide a decision-making reference.

  • Jeju International Airport is characterized by the occurrence of low-level windshear due to its location, surrounding terrain, and its weather characteristics. Especially the low-level windshear accompanied by tailwinds on both sides of the runway i.e., bidirectional tailwind, is a hazardous weather phenomenon with unique characteristics that are difficult to find at any other airports. This study focuses on bidirectional tailwind occurrence at Jeju International Airport in 2020-2021. As a result, characteristic pressure patterns of the types that cause bidirectional tailwind was identified as it was possible to categorize strong wind types such as 1) strong southwest wind, 2) strong east wind, and 3) strong northwest wind, which do not cause bidirectional tailwind, and wind direction variation types such as 4) bidirectional tailwind, and 5) south wind followed by southwest wind, which cause bidirectional tailwind. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving aviation safety by enabling aviation operators to predict and take appropriate safety measures based on their understanding of the causes and characteristics of bidirectional tailwind.

  • For developing the location based service which is individualized and specialized according to the characteristic of the users, the spatio-temporal pattern mining for extracting the meaningful and useful patterns among the various patterns of the mobile object on the spatio-temporal area is needed. Thus, in this paper, as the practical application toward the development of the location based service in which it is able to apply to the real life through the pattern mining from the huge historical data of mobile object, we are proposed STOMP(using Frequency of sequence and Weight) that is the new mining method for extracting the patterns with spatial and temporal constraint based on the problems of mining the optimal moving pattern which are defined in STOMP(F)[25]. Proposed method is the pattern mining method compositively using weighted value(weights) (a distance, the time, a cost, and etc) for our previous research(STOMP(F)[25]) that it uses only the pattern frequent occurrence. As to, it is the method determining the moving pattern in which the pattern frequent occurrence is above special threshold and the weight is most a little bit required among moving patterns of the object as the optimal path. And also, it can search the optimal path more accurate and faster than existing methods($A^*$, Dijkstra algorithm) or with only using pattern frequent occurrence due to less accesses to nodes by using the heuristic moving history.

  • The assessment of earthquake hazards involved consideration of earthquake magnitude, frequency, last movement and probability of occurrence. The appraisal of earthquake potential is feasible because historical data show a good correlation between earthquake size and the fault rupture parameters of length, displacement, and area. Additionally, the characteristics of fault behavior should be considered to evaluate the earthquake potential magnitude. In this study, in order to evaluate the earth quake potential by the fault behavioral patterns, based on the experimental background which the geometric characteristics of the individual domains, such as strike, width, fault tip patterns, and orientation of secondary shears reflect sliding behavioral patterns in each section, the straight sections of A, D and E domains were examined to the creeping section of stably sliding. In contrast, the curved section of B domain was examined to the locked section of stick-slip movement. These results of studies can be applied to evaluate the earthquake potential magnitude from the fault structural parameters.
