The fluorescence quenching of 2-phenyl-5-(4-biphenylyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) and 1,4-di-[2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)]-benzene (POPOP) by aniline has been carried out in different solvent mixtures of dioxane and acetonitrile at room temperature. The quenching is found to be appreciable and a positive deviation from linearity was observed in the Stern-Volmer plot in all the solvent mixtures. Various rate constants for the quenching processes have been determined using a modified Stern-Volmer equation. From the positive deviations of linear Stern-Volmer plots and the dependence of rate constants on the polarity of the solvents, it has been concluded that both static and dynamic quenching processes are responsible for the observed positive deviation in the Stern-Volmer plot.
The current investigation was performed to study sliding-wear-rate deviation (wear-rate data scatter) in carbon steels with various microstructures. Pure iron, 0.2 wt. % C steel, 0.45 wt. % C steel, and bearing steel (AISI52100) were used for the investigation. These steels possess different microstructures. Microstructures of the pure iron, two carbon steel and the bearing steel were full ferrite, ferrite + pearlite and full pearlite, respectively. Depending on the carbon content, the carbon steel had different pearlite-volume fractions. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were conducted using a ball-on-disk wear tester at a sliding speed of 0.1 m/s using a bearing ball (AISI52100) as a counterpart. Applied load and sliding distance were 100 N and 300 m, respectively. More than three (up to twelve) tests were conducted for each steel under the same conditions, and the mean deviations in the wear rate of the steel (microstructure) were compared. The wear-rate deviation in the steel with ferrite + pearlite microstructure was higher than that with ferrite microstructure, and the deviation decreased with the increase of pearlite volume fraction. The pure iron and the bearing steel specimens showed much less deviation. The high deviation observed from the ferrite + pearlite steel was attributed to irregular subsurface-crack nucleation and growth at the interface between the two micro constituents (ferrite and pearlite) during the wear test.
This study was performed to determine a comprehensive anatomic variation and deviation of the nasal septum in clinically normal dogs by use of computed tomography (CT). The nasal septum was evaluated in 36 shihtzu dogs and 16 beagle dogs. A degree of a septal deviation was evaluated by measuring a maximum angle and a distance of the septal deviation. The angle and distance of the septal deviation were significantly higher in shih-tzu dogs than in beagle dogs. There was no significant relationship between body weight and age and all measurements (angle and distance) in both breed dogs. Results of this study suggest that nasal septum deviation and its defect are observed on CT images of clinically normal dogs, especially in shih-tzu dogs.

There is a growing concern about the possible increase in inter-annual variation of minimum temperature during the winter season in Korea. This view is strengthened by frequently reported freezing injury to dormant fruit trees, while warmer winters have prevailed recently. The January minimum temperature record at fourteen weather stations was analyzed for 1951-2000. The results showed no evidence of increasing standard deviation at 3 locations between 1951-1980 and 1971-2000, while the remaining 11 stations showed a trend of decreasing standard deviation for the two periods. An empirical model explaining the spatial variation of the standard deviation was derived by regression analysis of 56 stations' data for 1971-2000. Daily minimum temperature and the site elevation may account for 68% of the observed variations. We applied this model to restore the average standard deviation of the January minimum temperature for 1971-2000, and the result was used to produce gridded minimum temperature data for the recurrence interval of 10 and 30 years at 250m resolution. A digital form of the plant hardiness zone map may be developed from this product for site-specific selection of adapted plant species.
Variation of tracer distribution during the vortex-breakup period in the Antarctic region was observed by the data from the Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS) and ILAS-II. All four trace species including methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and water vapor show similar patterns of vertical gradient in spite of different structures of zonal mean mixing ratio. Timings of vortex breakup on each level are estimated by two different methods, and they are compared with zonal standard deviations following the latitude circle of each trace species. Although the tracers have different chemical life times and sink/source, the zonal standard deviation patterns show remarkable similarities. The zonal standard deviation shown here to measure the zonal asymmetry of tracer distribution is believed to diagnose the timing of the Antarctic polar-vortex breakup reasonably well.
The author observed the relationships beween the dental midline and the midsagittal plane by taking 242 cases P-A cephalo-graphy grouped by male and female 2-6 years age group, 7-15 years age group, and adult age group. The following results were obtained by the observation. 1. Generally, the median line almost coincided with dental midline ineach age group. 1. It showed som degree of deviation in each age group. 2. It showed some degree of deviation in each age group. 3. The some degree of deviation shifted in accordance with each age group. 4. In adult age group, the dental milline more coincided with median line in male than in female.
The present research has been carried out in an attempt to obtain fundamental data which contribute to enhansing the accuracy of cocoon reeling test and improving the method of it more effectively. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The standard deviation and coefficient of variation of percentage of reelability and of percentage of raw silk yield to the sample size tended to show a gradual decrease according to the increasing of the sample size. However, the significant differences in the standard deviation and coefficient of variation of percentage of reelability and of percentage of raw silk yield between the different sizes of the samples having more than 300 cocoons have not been observed according to their sizes. 2. The significant difference in the standard errors from percentage of reelability between the samples of 300 cocoons and 400 cocoons have not been observed. 3. The significant difference in the standad errors from percentage of raw silk yield between the samples of 300 cocoons, 500 cocoons and 600 cocoons have not been observed. 4. The significant difference in the standard deviation, the standard errors and coefficient of variation to the length of a bave between the different sizes of the samples have not been shown. 5. From the above result, it is estimated that the optimum sire of the sample for the cocoon reeling test is the 300 cocoons.

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of concha bullosa (CB) and nasal septal deviation (NSD) and their impact on maxillary sinus volume (MSV). Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images of 106 Emirati people were used in this study. The direction and angle of septal deviation were calculated. The presence of CB, which could be unilateral, contralateral, or bilateral in relation to the direction of NSD, was also recorded. MSV was measured using reconstructed Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine images on Dolphin 3D imaging software version 11.8 premium (Dolphin Imaging, Chatsworth, CA, USA). P values<0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: CB was detected in 37.7% of the sample; 20.7% of the sample showed single unilateral CB and 16.6% had single bilateral CB. NSD was seen in 74.5% of the sample. In the participants with CB, 45.5% showed mild deviation, 34.4% showed moderate deviation, and only 12.5% showed severe septal deviation. CB, but not NSD, was associated with significantly higher MSV on the affected side (P=0.001). Conclusion: Although NSD was observed in more than two-thirds of the sample and CB was present in more than one-third of the sample, only CB had a significant impact on MSV.
We present the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS sample of the Final SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data. To estimate the uncertainties in the measured genus, we very carefully construct mock CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3. We find that the shape of the observed genus curve agrees very well with the prediction of perturbation theory and with the mean topology of the mock surveys. However, comparison with simulations show that the observed genus curve slightly deviates from the theoretical Gaussian expectation. From the deviation, we further quantify the primordial non-Gaussian contribution.

The statistical process control charts are very extensively used for monitoring of process mean, deviation, defect rate or reject rate. In this paper we consider a control chart to monitor the process reject rate in the high yield process, which is based on the observed cumulative probability of the number of items inspected until r defective items are observed. We first propose selection of the optimal value of r in the CPC-r charts, and also consider the usefulness of the chart in high yield process such as semiconductor or TFT-LCD manufacturing process.
