In this study the progressive collapse potential of three- and nine-story special steel moment frames designed in accordance with current design code was evaluated by nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. It was observed that the model structures had high potential for progressive collapse when a first story column was suddenly removed. Then the size of beams required to satisfy the failure criteria for progressive collapse was obtained by the virtual work method; i.e., using the equilibrium of the external work done by gravity load due to loss of a column and the internal work done by plastic rotation of beams. According to the nonlinear dynamic analysis results, the model structures designed only for normal load turned out to have strong potential for progressive collapse whereas the structures designed by plastic design concept for progressive collapse satisfied the failure criterion recommended by the GSA guideline.
Diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis is currently confirmed by the detection of the oocysts or endogenous stages in fecal or tissue samples. Various conventional staining methods and serodiagnostic techniques have been reported, but the latter has far been limited to a few laboratories. Cryptosporidium has recently been reported in mice and chiekens in Korea, but there has been no report on staining methods to the oocysts. The present study was performed by light and scanning electron microscopic observations, and discussed with staining properties of four conventional methods such as dichromate solution floatation method, Carbol fuchsin stain, Auramine-O stain and Giemsa stain method. Cryptosporidial oocysts were isolated from the laboratory mouse. In tissue sections of duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and upper colon, numerous very small, basophilic bodies were observed on the border of mucosal epithelial cells. In scanning electron microscopic observations, a few of developmental stages of Cryptosporidium were seen. Two types of thick and thin-walled oocysts were recognized in the intestinal contents. Mean size of its were $5.19{\pm}0.23{\times}4.31{\pm}0.32{\mu}m$ and $5.14{\pm}0.25{\times}4.27{\pm}0.4{\mu}m$, respectively. Carbol fuchsin and Auramine-O stain methods are recommended as the satisfactory ones for the identification of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Giemsa stain was also recommended as available in the laboratory, because a few of developmental stage fo Cryptosporidium could be seen by it.

In this paper we describe a robust method of improving precision in monitoring high energy ion implantation processes. Ion implant energy accuracy was measured in the device manufacturing process using an unpatterned implanted layer on an intrinsic p-type silicon wafer. To increase Rs sensitivity to energy at the well implant process, a PN junction structure was formed by P-well and deep N-well implants into the p-type Si wafer. It was observed that the depletion layer formed by the PN junction was very sensitive to energy variation of the well implant. Conclusively, it can be recommended to monitor well implant processes using the Rs measurement method described herein, i.e., a PN junction diode structure since it shows excellent Rs sensitivity to variation caused by energy difference at the well implant step.
Slopes stabilised with piles are seldom analysed considering uncertainties in the parameters of the pile-slope system. Reliability analysis of the pile-slope system quantifies the degree of uncertainties and evaluates the safety of the system. In the present study, the reliability analysis of a slope stabilised with piles is performed using the first-order reliability method (FORM) based on Hasofer-Lind approach. The implicit performance function associated with the factor of safety (FS) of the slope is approximated using the response surface method. The analyses are carried out considering the design matrices formulated based on both the 2k factorial design augmented with a centre run (2k fact-centred design) and face-centered cube design (FCD). The finite element method is used as the deterministic model to compute the FS of the pile-slope system. Results are compared with the results of the Monte Carlo simulation. It is observed that the optimum location of the row of piles is at the middle of the slope to achieve the maximum FS. The results show that the reliability of the system is not uniform for different pile configurations, even if the system deterministically satisfies the target factor of safety (FSt) criterion. The FSt should be selected judiciously as it is observed that the reliability of the system changes drastically with the FSt level. The results of the 2k fact-centred design and FCD are in good agreement with each other. The procedure of the FCD is computationally costly and hence the use of 2k fact-centred design is recommended, provided the response of the system is sufficiently linear over the factorial space.

The present study addresses the direct and indirect methods of determining the mode-I fracture toughness of concrete using experimental tests and particle flow code. The direct method used is compaction tensile test and the indirect methods are notched Brazilian disc test, semi-circular bend specimen test, and hollow center cracked disc. The experiments were carried out to determine which indirect method yields the fracture toughness closer to the one obtained by the direct method. In the numerical analysis, the PFC model was first calibrated with respect to the data obtained from the Brazilian laboratory test. The crack paths observed in the simulated tests were in reasonable accordance with experimental results. The discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in the models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded particles. The mode-I fracture toughness in the direct tensile test was smaller than the indirect testing results. The fracture toughness obtained from the SCB test was closer to the direct test results. Hence, the semi-circular bend test is recommended as a proper experiment for determination of mode-I fracture toughness of concrete in the absence of direct tests.

The natural frequency of a system is commonly used in evaluating the serviceability condition of a floor. However. the current equations recommended in many building codes do not consider the various material types of a slab system; thus. different results are observed. Likewise. the transformation of a slab section required to predict the natural frequency of a composite deck plate is complicated. due to the varying shapes of the deck plates. Therefore. a new and simplified method of transforming a composite slab into an equivalent concrete slab is proposed. he modified vibration prediction equation was proposed based on the current vibration prediction equation recommended by LRFD. Compared to other equations. it is the closest to those obtained from experiments. The modified equation provides about 14.3% more accurate results than that recommended by LRFD. Likewise. the applicability of the proposed equation to other types of composite deck plate floor system was validated.
The material of choice for functional and esthetic reconstruction of maxillofacial defects is silicone. Silicone has appropriate physical properties for maxillofacial prosthesis but it has weak edge strength. Therefore, a proper combination of silicone and polyurethane sheet is recommended to improve this weakness. Various primers are also used to enhance the adhesive strength between silicone and polyurethane sheet. The purpose of this study was to determine the adhesive strength of silicone and polyurethane sheet. Silicone elastomer mixture was made by admixing MDX4-4210 elastomer (40%) and Silastic Medical Adhesive Type A(60%). This silicone elastomer mixture was attached to polyurethane sheet, using one of three different primers(1205, S-2260, or A-304), treated for 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours. These were then polymerized in room temperature, dry-heat oven or microwave oven. Six specimens per each group, a total of 270 specimens were prepared for final test. The differences of T-peel bonding strengths were then determined by a test. The differences of T-peel bonding strengths were then determined by a test method that was recommended by American Society for Testing and Materials C794-80. The results were statistically analyzed using the ANOVA and Mutiple Range Tests(Tukey' HSD). The reults were as follow. 1. Type of primer, primer reaction time, and methods of polymerization showed significant correlation on the T-peel bonding strengths in adhesiveness between silicone and polyurethane sheet. 2. A-304 primer showed statistically higher in T-peel bonding strength than otehr type of primers except for the polymerization in microwave oven with reaction times of 2, 6 hours(p<0.05). 3. No significant differences in T-peel bonding strength were observed among the polymerization methods. 4. The effect of reaction time by the primer type and polymerization method showed statistically significant differences in bonding strength among different reaction times. And in most cases, reaction time of 1 or 2 hours showed higher T-peel bonding strength.
Application of digital filter to the wave analysis is studied using the observed data by wave gauge. Sea wave data obtained from wave gauge always include long wave frequency components. In order to estimate the sea wave parameters, we must re-analyzed wave data by using a digital filter and the concept of mean sea level correction method. By the wave by wave analysis and spectral methods, sea wave parameters on the basis of wave data obtained by the conventional method and digital filter are compared. The best-fitted design filter determined by the necessary conditions of frequency responses, can be obtained by calculating various transfer functions. Thus, to get the best the digital filter design, both Butterworth filter and Savitzky-Golay filter of digital filter are used in the frequency and time domain, respectively. Three cases of observation wave data are calculated by applying digital filter. The components of different frequency bands in the surf zone are coexisted in three cases. The wave data for wind wave components is computed using the digital filter the surf zone and off-surf zone, and based on the filtered data, wave parameters are calculated by the spectral analysis and wave by wave analysis methods, respectively. As a results, when sea wave data observed by wave gauge are analyzed, the Savitzky-Golay method is recommended which can well appear cut-off frequency by experimental choosing filter length in the time domain. The better mean sea level correction method is the Butterworth filter in the frequency domain.

This study examined domestic and international regulations concerning concrete unit weight, along with an evaluation of unit weight in concrete poured on construction sites. Fluctuations in unit weight were observed to correlate with concrete quality issues such as material separation, bleeding, and latency. A word cloud analysis, centered on the concept of concrete quality, further highlighted the significant influence of unit weight. Comparative analysis between Korea and Japan revealed few substantial differences in unit weight management and measurement techniques. However, calculation of concrete unit weight at delivery, using the unit volume mass method, indicated considerable variability among random on-site samples. Notably, the unit weight often exceeded the recommended standard. These findings emphasize the necessity for strict adherence to unit weight standards by all stakeholders involved in concrete production and construction, including ready-mix concrete (REMICON) producers, construction firms, and inspectors. To ensure consistent quality of cast concrete on-site, the establishment of a more comprehensive and practical system is recommended, incorporating measures such as on-site inspections.

Background: Pes planus, or flat foot, causes lower limb malalignment and foot pain during walking or exercise. Therefore, a highly reliable evaluation method to accurately diagnose flat feet is necessary. This study investigated the intra-and inter-rater reliability of the navicular drop test in different postures. Design: Cross sectional study. Methods: Forty healthy volunteers performed the navicular drop test in three different combinations of non-weight-bearing and weight-bearing postures (standing/standing, sitting/sitting, and sitting/standing). Two examiners alternately performed the measurements five times in each subject, and in each posture. Significant differences in measurements were obtained among the three postures, with the highest navicular drop being observed in the sitting/standing posture. Results: Inter-rater reliability was high in the sitting/standing and sitting/sitting postures. Intra-rater reliability was high in all three postures. In the sitting/sitting and sitting/standing postures, large navicular drop values and high inter- and intra-rater reliability were observed. Conclusion: Therefore, the sitting/standing and sitting/sitting postures are recommended for use in navicular drop tests to diagnose flat feet.
