An automobile outside rear view mirror system has been analyzed and designed to reduce vibration with a finite element model. model analysis is conducted for the calculation of natural frequencies. harmonic analysis is utilized to estimate the displacements of the glass surface under dynamic loads. The model is verified with the vibration experiment of the parts and the assembled body. The structure of the mirror system is optimized for the robustness defined by the Taguchi concept. At first, many potential design variables are defined. Final design variables are selected based on the amount of contribution on the objective function. That is, sensitive variables are chose. The SN ratio in the Taguchi method is replaced by an objective function with the mean and the standard deviation of the quality characteristic. The defined objective function is appropriate in the structural design in that the vibration displacements are minimized while the robustness is improved.

A study on the topology optimization of a multi-spectral camera for space-use is presented. The optimization is carried out under self-weight and polishing pressure loading. A multi-spectral camera for space-use experiences degradation of optical image in the space, which can not be detected on the optical test bench on the earth. An optical surface deformation of a primary mirror, which is a principal component of the camera system, is an important factor affecting the optical performance of the whole camera system. In this study, topology optimization of the primary mirror of the camera is presented. As an objective function, a measure of Strehl ratio is used. Total mass of the primary mirror is given as a constraint to the optimization problem. The sensitivities of the objective function and constraint are calculated by direct differentiation method. Optimization procedure is carried out by an optimality criteria method. For the light-weight primary mirror design, a three dimensional model is treated. As a preliminary example, topology optimization considering a self-weight loading is treated. In the second example, the polishing pressure is also included as a loading in the topology optimization of the mirror. Results of the optimized design topology for the mirror with various mass constraints are presented.

Dynamic stability of the vehicle rearview mirror is an important factor for the driver's visual perception (image blur) when driving down the road and regarded as one of the vehicle level N&V performance of visible component vibration. Several projects within GM identified a set of objective metrics and validation methods that can replace current existing subjective evaluation of mirror stability. This paper presents objective evaluation results for assessing dynamic stability (angle of rotation) of the vehicle rearview mirrors using both in-lab FRF measurements and on-road testing.

One of the exciting research areas of the X-ray microscope is the observation of a living cell. In order to study a living cell with high resolution the order of the several tens nm, we need to improve the efficiency of mirrors which are components of an X-ray microscope system. In this paper we present the mirror design and manufacture to give a high resolution and reflectivity. We designed Wolter type I the condenser and objective mirror with the several tens of nm resolution. According to mirror design. we made the program using the visual basic. Using the new processing method as well as the ultra-precision diamond cutting, we directly processed the inside of an aluminum hulk in order to manufacture mirrors. From the experimental result, we think that the new processing method will improve a high reflectivity through the improved cutting tools and optimum cutting conditions.
A study on optimum design of the lightweight mirror of a satellite camera is presented. An optical surface deformation of the lightweight mirror, which is a principal component of the camera system, is an important factor affecting the optical performance of the whole camera system. In this study, optimum design of the lightweight mirror is presented. Total weight of the mirror to reduce the optical surface deformation and the launching cost is used as an objective function. Peak-to-valley value and natural frequency of the mirror are given as constraints to the optimization problem. The sensitivities of the objective function and constraint are calculated by a finite difference method. The optimization procedure is carried out by the commercial optimizer, DOT. As a verification of the optimum design of the mirror, two design examples are treated. In the real application example, the lightweight mirror with 600mm effective diameter is treated. The optimized results with various design variables, which are obtained by considering thickness limitations, are analyzed.
A 0.5-numerical-aperture (NA) refractive-reflective objective, composed of a low-NA refractive and a reflective focal reducer, is designed. A 0.25-NA Lister objective is used for the refractive. A two-spherical-mirror system, corrected for spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism is used for the reflective focal reducer. In spite of high NA, the refractive-reflective objective has an 18-mm working distance and improved imaging performance, compared to the 0.25-NA Lister objective.
Objective: Mirror therapy is one of the promising methods suggested for the upper limb rehabilitation of stroke patients. While mirror therapy was presented to be effective in improving motor function of stroke patients, problems were raised as preceding studies had various methods in applying mirror therapy. Some studies even reported no effect in mirror therapy. Our supposition for the reason of such problems was a decrease of attention on the illusive image during mirror therapy of stroke patients, and we aimed to observe this. Design: A cross-sectional preliminary study. Methods: Three hemiplegic acute patients were recruited for the traditional mirror therapy. It lasted for 30 minutes, and 12 different tasks were asked to perform. All procedures were video-recorded, and Observer XT was used to analyse mirror-gazing time, gaze-distracted time, preparation time, frequency of mirror gazing, frequency of distraction, frequency of preparation for treatment. Results: Subjects spent an average of 4-5 minutes having instructions about the mirror therapy intervention (preparation duration), an average of 11 minutes watching the mirror during therapy (mirror-gazing duration), and the rest of 14-15 minutes looking around the environment (gaze-distracted duration). During the mirror therapy, the number of distracted moments (frequency of distraction) was eight times more than focusing on the mirror (frequency of mirror gazing). Conclusions: Once the patient looks at the mirror, it only lasts about 5 seconds on average. Thus, we confirmed that patients could not concentrate on the illusion during the session and therefore it may have affected the effectiveness of the therapy.

Minimum three pairs of model are necessary to determine absolute coordinates of three-dimensional objects. This paper researches the method of analyzing three-dimensional coordinates of all sides of objects by photographing a pair of stereo model through the medium of mirror. An objective lies in improving the accuracy and the efficiency of mirror images method by introducing an error correction function for distortion of the mirror. Projected-onto-mirror points are transformed on the object plane through mirror plane equation. As the result, X-coordinates error is the largest and Y, Z-coordinates error represents about 1mm. Also, accuracy can be improved by introducing correction function for left and right mirror and correcting the distortion of mirror.
