  • Neural representation of a visual object is distributed across visual cortex and overlapped with those of many other objects. Thus repeating an object facilitates the recognition of the object while it impairs the recognition of other objects. These effects are called repetition priming and antipriming, respectively. Two experiments investigated a new phenomenon of repetition antipriming, in which a repeated object itself is antiprimed. The learning stage presented object pictures which were degraded at various levels. Participants determined how recognizable each object was. Then, the test stage presented the intact version of the object pictures and made participants to perform a categorization task. Both Experiment 1 and 2 found that the processing of the objects that had been recognized were facilitated (repetition priming) while the processing of the objects that had been perceptually ambiguous were impaired (repetition antipriming). These findings suggest that experiencing a perceptually ambiguous object might enhance the connection between feature-level representations and multiple object-level representations, which impairs the subsequent recognition of the repeated object.

  • Object recognition techniques using principal component analysis are disposed to be decreased recognition rate when lighting change of image happens. The purpose of this thesis is to propose an object recognition technique using new PCA analysis method that discriminates an object in database even in the case that the variation of illumination in training images exists. And the object recognition algorithm proposed here represents more enhanced recognition rate using improved k-Nearest Neighbor. In this thesis, we proposed an object recognition algorithm which creates object space by pre-processing and being learned image using histogram equalization and median filter. By spreading histogram of test image using histogram equalization, the effect to change of illumination is reduced. This method is stronger to change of illumination than basic PCA method and normalization, and almost removes effect of illumination, therefore almost maintains constant good recognition rate. And, it compares ingredient projected test image into object space with distance of representative value and recognizes after representative value of each object in model image is made. Each model images is used in recognition unit about some continual input image using improved k-Nearest Neighbor in this thesis because existing method have many errors about distance calculation.

  • In this paper, we propose a new opto-digital object recognition system which has rotation, scale, and shift invariant characteristics. The fourier power spectrum of the object image is modified to get shift invariance. The log-polar transform is used for rotation and scale invariance. And the decision of similarities is performed by nonlinear joint transform correlator (NJTC) that can control the ratio of phase and amplitude signals. Experimental verification of th eproposed optical object recognition system is presented.

  • We propose an attention based object recognition system, to recognize object fast and robustly. For this we calculate visual stimulus degrees and make saliency maps. Through this map we find a strongly attentive part of image by stimulus degrees, where local features are extracted to recognize objects.

  • By using a concept of interrelation quadruplet between line segments, a new method for recognition of object families is introduced. The interrelation quadruplet, which is invariant under similarity transform of a pair of line segments, is used as a feature information for polygonal shape recognition. Several useful propertes of the interrelation quadruplet are derived in relation to efficient recognition of object families. Compared with the previous methods, the proposed method requires only small space of storage and is shown to be computationally simple and efficient.

  • 3D object recognition independent of translation and rotation using an ultrasonic sensor array, invariant moment vectors and SOFM(Self Organizing Feature Map) neural networks is presented. Using invariant moment vectors of the acquired 16×8 pixel data of square, rectangular, cylindric and regular triangular blocks, 3D objects could be classified by SOFM neural networks. Invariant moment vectors are constant independent of translation and rotation. The recognition rates for the training and testing data were 95.91% and 92.13%, respectively.

  • The object detection and recognition process is a very important task in the field of computer vision, and related research is actively being conducted. However, in the actual object recognition process, the recognition accuracy is often degraded due to the resolution mismatch between the training image data and the test image data. To solve this problem, in this paper, we designed and developed an integrated object recognition and super-resolution framework by proposing an image super-resolution technique to improve object recognition accuracy. In detail, 11,231 license plate training images were built by ourselves through web-crawling and artificial-data-generation, and the image super-resolution artificial neural network was trained by defining an objective function to be robust to the image flip. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, we experimented with the trained image super-resolution and recognition on 1,999 test images, and it was confirmed that the proposed super-resolution technique has the effect of improving the accuracy of character recognition.

  • Most of the current 2-D object recognition systems are model-based. In such systems, the representation of each of a known set of objects are precompiled and stored in a database of models. Later, they are used to recognize the image of an object in each instance. In this thesis, the approach method for the 2-D object recognition is treating an object boundary as a string of structral units and utilizing string matching to analyze the scenes. To reduce string matching time, models are rebuilt by means of fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm. In this experiments, the image of objects were taken at initial position of a robot from the CCD camera, and the models are consturcted by the proposed algorithm. After that the image of an unknown object is taken by the camera at a random position, and then the unknown object is identified by a comparison between the unknown object and models. Finally, the amount of translation and rotation of object from the initial position is computed.

  • The application of object recognition technology has been increased with a growing need to introduce automated system in industry. However, object transformed by noises and shadows appeared from illumination causes challenge problem in object detection and recognition. In this paper, an illumination invariant object detection using a DoG filter and adaptive threshold is proposed that reduces noises and shadows effects and reserves geometry features of object. And also, rotation invariant object recognition is proposed that has trained with neural network using classes categorized by object type and rotation angle. The simulation has been processed to evaluate feasibility of the proposed method that shows the accuracy of 99.86% and the matching speed of 0.03 seconds on ETRI database, which has 16,848 object images that has obtained in various lighting environment.

  • The construction industry is suffering from aging workers, frequent accidents, as well as low productivity. With the rapid development of information technologies in recent years, automatic construction, especially automatic cranes, is regarded as a promising solution for the above problems and attracting more and more attention. However, in practice, limited by the complexity and dynamics of construction environment, manual inspection which is time-consuming and error-prone is still the only way to recognize the search object for the operation of crane. To solve this problem, an image-processing-based automated object recognition approach is proposed in this paper, which is a fusion of Convolutional-Neutral-Network (CNN)-based and traditional object detections. The search object is firstly extracted from the background by the trained Faster R-CNN. And then through a series of image processing including Canny, Hough and Endpoints clustering analysis, the vertices of the search object can be determined to locate it in 3D space uniquely. Finally, the features (e.g., centroid coordinate, size, and color) of the search object are extracted for further recognition. The approach presented in this paper was implemented in OpenCV, and the prototype was written in Microsoft Visual C++. This proposed approach shows great potential for the automatic operation of crane. Further researches and more extensive field experiments will follow in the future.
