The purpose of this study is to collect fundamental data for adult female health improvement based on urban adult female obesity and cardiopulmonary function. Surveyed were 859 adult females who visited a health improvement center in D district in Seoul between April, 1999, and December, 1999, and the resulting data are as follows: 1. The adult female mean BMI was $23.97{\pm}3.11kgm^2$, which comes within the range of overweight. Among them, BMI of the females aged 41-60, and over 60, were significantly higher. Mean percentage of body fat was $32.07{\pm}4.63$, and it significantly increased in accordance with age, recording the highest among those aged over 60. 2. The systolic blood pressure significantly increased in accordance with age, recording highest among those aged over 60. Those aged 41-60 and over 60 showed significantly higher diastolic blood pressure than those in their 20s and 30s; however, they had a significantly lower heart rate. Vital capacity and maximum oxygen intake significantly decreased in accordance with age, and those aged over 60 were lowest. 3. As to health perception, 20.6% of the subjects perceived themselves as healthy, and those who perceived themselves as unhealthy showed significantly higher BMI than those who perceived themselves to be of moderate health. 4. There were no significant differences in blood pressure, heart rate and maximum oxygen intake in accordance with health perception, but those who perceived themselves as healthy showed significantly higher vital capacity than those who didn't. 5. As to cardiopulmonary function in accordance with obesity, the obese group showed significantly higher systolic blood pressure than those whose weight was normal to overweight. The diastolic blood pressure of the normal weight group was the lowest, while the obese group showed significantly lower vital capacity and maximum oxygen intake. These findings indicate that the womens' health promotion program must include an effective strategy for preventing obesity, and strengthening cardiopulmonary function.
A cross-sectional survey was used to investigate the rates of overweight and obesity (BMI$\geq$25), and eating attitudes among college students. Data were collected at a large southeastern university. Adolescents (ages 18-25) self-reported weight and height (to calculate BMI), and, in addition to demographic information, completed the eating attitudes (EAT 26) scale to assess dieting tendencies. Significance of the mean BMI differences between gender and ethnic background were assessed by one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA). Chi-square was used to determine whether the rate of those with BMI$\geq$25 between gender and ethnic background was statistically significant. While 52.7% of the students' BMI were within the normal weight category, 15.2% were underweight, 21.3% were overweight, and 10.8% were obese. The rate of BMI$\geq$25 differed by gender and ethnicity, with males and African Americans having higher rates. About 12 % of the participants reported disturbed eating behavior, which is lower than previously reported. Even so, results support the generally held belief that disturbed eating attitudes and unhealthy dieting are common among college students, especially among females. At the same time, disturbed eating attitudes are not just the domain of young female students; about 10% of college males reported disturbed eating attitudes. Findings of this study call for obesity prevention/intervention and lifestyle modification outreach programs among college students. Weight status and unhealthy eating behaviors of college. students should be a concern to health care professionals. While obese young adults will likely remain obese throughout their adult life, excessive dieting among students, which is linked to eating disorders and other health hazards, does not provide healthy and adequate alternatives for maintaining a normal BMI. Implications for obesity prevention programs are discussed.
Purpose : This study was carried out to compare actual obesity rate, body shape perception and weight control between outpatients visiting obesity center and general population in the $20{\sim}30$ age bracket. Methods : The respondents were 72 females including 38 outpatients and 34 general population in the $20{\sim}30$ age bracket. We compared the results of the questionnaires about body shape, obesity and weight control between two groups. Data were analyzed by Student T-test and Chi-square test. Results : In questionnaire survey results, the average BMI, obesity rate, body shape distortion of the respondents who have normal weight, concern for weight control in outpatients group were significantly higher than general population group. Satisfaction on weight control in distorted group was lower than undistorted group. Conclusion : A distortion of the body shape caused unsatisfaction on weight control and it was significantly high in outpatients group, especially among the respondents who have normal weight. It is considered that the distortion of the body shape should be corrected by counselling for proper treatment.
This study was carried out to investigate the dietary attitudes, nutrition knowledge, nutrient intake, eating-related characteristics of dancing major and non-major female university students. The survey was conducted from October 1 to November 10, 2003 by questionnaires and data analyzed by SPSS program. The results are summarized as follows: 25.5% of the underweight group, 53.6% of the normal weight group, 12.5% of the overweight group and 66.7% of the obese group had correct perception about their body image. Eighty-one point three percent of the dancing majors and 77.2% of the non-majors were concerned about weight control, and 71.3% of the dancing majors and 64.5% of the non-majors had weight control experiences. There were no significant differences in nutrition knowledge scores and dietary attitude scores between dancing majors and non-majors. There were no significant differences in ‘predisposition to obesity scores’ between dancing majors and non-majors, and the scores were low. ‘Predisposition to anorexia’ scores and ‘uncontrollable urges to eat’ scores were significantly higher in the dancing majors compared to the non-majors. Intakes of the nutrients were lower than those of the Korean recommended dietary allowances (RDAs), except vitamin C in the dancing majors. Intakes of calories, calcium and iron were lower than those of the RDAs in the non-majors. Dietary attitude was positively correlated with nutrition knowledge but was negatively correlated with ‘uncont-rollable urges to eat’. In the dancing majors, ‘predisposition to obesity’ showed significantly positive correlation with obesity rate and ‘uncontrollable urges to eat’ and was negatively correlated with nutrition knowledge and dietary attitude. In the non-majors, obesity rate showed positive correlation with ‘predisposition to obesity’ and ‘uncontrollable urges to eat’. Therefore proper nutritional education program and recommended dietary allowances are required for dancing majors to improve their nutritional status.
Purpose & Methods: In order to study obese gene mutation rate in obese Korean patients and to investigate the effect at Chegamuiyiin-tang and electro-lipolysis-acupuncture on obesity treatment. the difference of the reaction to herbal dieting between patients with ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor mutation and the patients with wild type ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor is observed. Results: Chegamuiyiin-tang and electro-lipolysis-acupuncture treatment are effective on the treatment of obesity in weight reduction. body fat reduction and the circumferences of arm, abdomen, hip and thigh. In the comparison of ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor wild type and ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor mutation groups, body fat was more reduced with statistical significance, and as for BMI change and body weight change were higher in ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor mutation groups with no statistical significance. In the comparison of ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor wild type and ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor mutation groups among BMI under 25 patients change rate of body weight. BMI, body fact percentage, WHR and body circumference were higher in ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor mutation group than in ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor wild type group. Conclusion: These results imply that herbal dieting program combined with electro-lipolysis-acupuncture is more effective on reducing body weight and body fat in ${\beta}3$ adrenergic receptor mutation group than wild type group, and that the earlier the treatment is applied, the more effective it is.
This study aims to spatialize the gap between obesity levels through the body mass index, an objective indicator of the level of health among vulnerable people. Thus, areas where the BMI showed cluster patterns with spatial high and low values were extracted and the characteristics of the region were analyzed. The analysis showed that the I statistics for the obesity rate were 0.07 and the z-score was 4.39, confirming spatial autocorrelation. For z-score, it was much larger than the maximum threshold of 2.57. This means that the rate of obesity among the socially vulnerable is regional, and this gap is spatially significant. The results of comparing and analyzing the local environment for these areas of obesity and health care were found to be areas with poor public transportation, less readily available parks, and a concentration of single and multi-generation housing. The analysis results of this study are meaningful in that they provide spatial implications for the health of the socially vulnerable class that previous studies have neglected.
[Purpose] While the anti-obesity effects of exercise and capsiate are well-observed individually, the effect of exercise with capsiate intake has not been systematically explored yet. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the anti-obesity effects of exercise training can be further enhanced by capsiate intake. [Methods] 8-week-old male mice were divided into 3 groups (n = 8 per group): sedentary group (SED; nontrained), exercise-trained group (EXE) and exercise-trained group with 10 mg/kg of capsiate intake (EXE+CAP). All mice were offered high-fat diet and water ad libitum. The mild-intensity treadmill training was conducted 5 times a week for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, metabolism during exercise and abdominal fat weight were measured. [Results] Body weight and the rate of total abdominal fat were significantly less in EXE+CAP than in SED but not between EXE and SED. The average of respiratory exchange rate during exercise was significantly much lower in EXE+SED (p = 0.003) compared to the difference between EXE and SED (p = 0.025). Likewise, the fat oxidation during exercise was significantly much higher in EXE+SED (p = 0.016) compared to the difference between EXE and SED (p = 0.045). Then, the carbohydrate oxidation during exercise was significantly much lower in EXE+SED (p = 0.003) compared to the difference between EXE and SED (p = 0.028). [Conclusion] In conclusion, the anti-obesity functions of exercise training can be further enhanced by capsiate intake by increasing fat oxidation during exercise. Therefore, we suggest that capsiate could be a candidate supplement which can additively ameliorate obesity when combined with exercise.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of obesity at diagnosis on the prognosis of Korean breast cancer patients after classifying them according to their reproductive history and age by comparing the overall survival rate (OS) and disease-free survival rate (DFS). This study is a retrospective cohort study using 4181 breast cancer cases at one of the medical centers in Korea during the 3 year period from 2006 to 2008. We confirmed the levels of death and recurrence through a follow-up study completed in May 30. 2015. In conclusion, the parous patients had a lower OS than the non-parous patients (p=.000), and the younger patients below 40 years old had a lower OS and DFS than those who were 40 years old or older (p=.003, p=.000), while obesity did not affect the OS and DFS significantly. However, several subgroups in which obesity affected the OS and DFS were found after classifying the patients according to their reproductive history and age. For the subgroups classified by reproductive history, the obese patients had a lower OS and DFS than the non-obese patients in the subgroup in which the patients have a reproductive history (p=.001, p=.005). For the subgroups classified according to age, the obese patients had a lower OS and DFS than the non-obese patients in the subgroup in which the patients were 40 years old or older (p=.005, p=.014). Obesity affected the OS and DFS in the subgroup in which the patients were 40 years old or older and had a reproductive history (p=.000, p=.003). The results of this study show that obesity has an effect on the prognosis of breast cancer patients in the subgroups classified by reproductive history and age, whereas it has no effect on the OS and DFS of the patients when they are examined in their entirety. It also suggests that appropriate nursing intervention is needed for the subgroups in which obesity has effects on prognosis.
Backgrounds: Obesity and depression are serious health problem and also constitute cardiovascular disease risk factors. Some studies found an association between obesity and higher rates of depression in women but not in men. The current study examined the association between depressive symptoms and obesity, especially central obesity in Korean women. Methods : The participants were 4,609 Korean women aged 20-85 years. Each individual was assessed for the presence of obesity and central obesity using the criteria suggested by WPRO(World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific). Depressive symptomatology was measured by Beck Depression Inventory(BDI). Results : In obese women, rate of depressed women is significantly higher compared normal group(27.6% VS. 23.2%, p<0.01). The rates of depressed women is higher in women who had central obesity(26.9% VS. 22.7%, p<0.01). Depressed women had higher rates of central obesity(93.2% VS.86.9%, p<0.01). Conclusion Our findings show obesity especially central obesity is associated with depressed women and suggests that further investigation for interaction between depression and obesity is needed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of chronic diseases according to obesity in the elderly older than age 65 using data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016~2018). The subjects of the survey were 3,245 elderly older than age 65 who participated in the health survey and nutrition survey, 45.8% of the subjects were males and 54.2% of the subjects were female. 37.5% of all the elderly were obese, and the females (42.4%) were more obese than the males (31.8%) (p<0.001). Diabetes, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia had a similar prevalence of 24.6%, 63.0%, and 12.7% in males and females, respectively. Hypercholesterolemia was higher in the elderly females (44.2%) than in the elderly males (24.9%) (p<0.001). Through the logistic regression analysis, it was found that the prevalence of chronic diseases was higher in obesity than normal in elderly males and females (p<0.001). The total food intake increased from 'under weight' to 'obesity' in males (p<0.01) and females (p<0.001). In the case of the elderly males, the higher the degree of obesity, the higher the energy intake (p<0.05), and 'pre-obesity' consumed the most energy in elderly females. As a result of this study, the higher the obesity rate of the elderly, the higher the prevalence of chronic diseases.
