  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of concentration of NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{++}$ in nutrient solution on the seedlings growth of ‘Mudeungsan’watermelon. Seeds were sown on March 16, 1997. NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{++}$ was treated with three different levels, respectively, NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ = 106, 206, 406ppm; $K^{+}$ = 150, 200, 400 ppm; $Ca^{++}$ = 150, 200, 400 ppm. Plant growth was investigated at four-days interval in 10 days after treatment. Increasing N concentration in the nutrient solution increased the plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight of shoot while high concentration of K and Ca in the nutrient solution decreased the seedling growth in terms of leaf area, leaf dry weight. The uptake of N, K and Mg in petiole sap was positively affected by the adding of 206 ppm of nitrate, 150 ppm of potassium and 200 ppm of calcium levels, respectively. The P and Ca uptake in petiole sap was not affected by the N and K concentrations in the nutrient solution while K concentration above 200 ppm decreased the N and Mg content in petiole sap. High concentration of Ca in the nutrient solution increased the Ca content in petiole sap while Ca concentration above 200 ppm decreased the N content.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of new material, bioceramic powder in the nutrient solution(0.02%) and foliar spray(0.2%) on the growth and fruit quality of aeroponically grown tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum MILL. cv. Seokwang). Plant height was lowered, but root growth was increased both treatment of bioceramic powder into the nutrient solution and foliar spray. Cluster growth of tomato plants increased up to 14% over than that of control in the plot of foliar spray with bioceramic powder. Total plant dry weight also increased when bioceramic powder was treated both into the nutrient solution and foliar spray. T/R ratio was reduced by the treatment of bioceramic powder, but NAR and RGR showed the highest in the plot of foliar spray treated with 0.2% bioceramic powder than that of the other plots. Cumulative fruit fresh and dry weight were reduced when bioceramic powder was treated into nutrient solution but foliar spray produced more cumulative fruit fresh and dry weight than that of control. It was shown that treatment of bioceramic powder into the nutrient solution and foliar spray could be improved sugar degree without reducing fruit yields.

  • We examined water flux, concentrations and contents in nutrients in precipitation, throughfall, stemflow and soil solution in natural deciduous hardwood forest(Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica) in Chunchon, Kangwon Province. The volume of throughfall was 2∼3% higher in Q. variabilis than in Q. monglica while volume of stemflow, Ao, A and B soil solution was 10∼15% higher in Q. variabilis compared to Q. monglica. Concentrations of K/sup +/ increased in throughfall H while concentrations of Ca/sup 2+/, Mg/sup 2+/ and NO₃/sup -/ increased in Ao soil solution. The former might be related to the canopy leaching and the latter related to leaching and nitrification in Ao horizon. Nutrient concentrations in throughfall, Ao, A and B soil solution decreased with increasing amount of water and especially the decreases in concentrations of K/sup +/, Mg/sup 2+/ and Cl/sup -/ were significant. Nutrient concentrations of Ca/sup 2+/ in Ao soil solution was 1.5 times higher in Q. variabilis than in Q. mongolica. However, there were no significant nutrient concentration differences in throughfall, stemflow and A and B soil solution between the two forest types. Stemflow was less than 10% of total water volume (throughfall + stemflow) to the forest floor, and contribution of stemflow to nutrient cycling seemed to be low in the study forest.

  • Herbs and plants widely used for the ecological restoration were selected for germination rate analysis under treatment of microorganisms to determine ideal treatment conditions and medium for enhanced germination rate. Albizzia julibrissin, when submerged in a nutrient medium or distilled water, presented a decrease in germination period rather than increase in germination rate. When treated with microorganism culture solution (JM-2) for 24 hours, 90% germination was achieved in two days, which is sufficient evidence to conclude that such treatment accelerates the germination of Albizzia julibrissin. Germination period decreased for Lespedeza cyrtobotrya samples submerged in microorganism solution for 15 and 48 hours, however, increases in germination rates were not observed. Sample treated in the solution for 24 hours had increased germination rate and enhanced germination period. Microorganism solution treatment had a negative effect on germination for Lespedeza cuneata, unlike Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Albizzia julibrissin. Microorganism treated seeds of Lepsedeza cuneata had a lower germination rate than that of the control with no treatment. However, submerging treatments in a nutrient medium or distilled water for 24 to 48 hours were proven effective with higher germination rates than control sample with no treatment. • The purpose of this research was to develop labor-saving cultural practices of cherry tomatoes in the deep flow technique (DFT) by omitting the process of raising seedling. Three cultivars, ‘Pepe’, ‘Pico’ and ‘Koko’ were propagated by the immediate setting of cuttings(lateral shoots) to the culture bed and by setting seedlings obtained by raising cuttings for 15 days, and grown in the standard and half - strength solution. 1. The immediate setting resulted in higher plants, larger number of leaves and larger leaf area during the early growth stage. And the harvest time was hastened by six days in the direct setting than that in the seedling setting. It was also earlier in ‘Pepe’, but not significant by different between two strengths of nutrient solution. 2. The average fruit weight was affected only by cultivars, but not by the type of cutting and the strength of nutrient solution. The highest yields were obtained from the immediate setting of ‘Pepe’ in other cultivars grown in the nutrient solution of standard strength. 3. Brix degree of treated cherry tomato juice was higher in ‘Pepe’ tomato cultured by immediate setting than others.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ on pH of the nutrient solution using municipal tap water during hydroponic culture of crisp lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) seedlings. The composition of starter solution was different from that of supplementary solution. The pH in the nutrient solution was suddenly declined and recovered as the supplementary solution was supplied. The pH of nutrient solution was increased with high temperature and, on the contrary, the EC of nutrient solution was decreased. It shows that plant absorbed nutrients more than water in given solution when the temperature and light was high. After supplying supplementary solution in 1st and End experiment, pH was slowly increased to 7 in NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ 0.25me/$\ell$, but maintained 6.4-6.5 in NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ 3me/$\ell$ and 6me/$\ell$. In 3rd experiment, pH was slowly increased from 6.7 to 7.4 in NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ 0.25me/$\ell$, but decreased from 6-6.5 to 5-5.5 in NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ 3me/$\ell$ and 6me/$\ell$. So it is suggested that the concentration between 0.25 me/$\ell$ and 3 me/$\ell$ by concentration base or the amount of NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ between 1me/6 $\ell$ and 7me/6 $\ell$ by total quantity in solution is appropriate for stabilizing pH in the nutrient solution. Also this experiment suggests that hand operated measurements must be cautious due to the change of pH and EC within a 24-hour cycle.

  • Studies were conducted to evaluate the differential al tolerance of suwon 205 and olmil wheats grown is nutrient solution and determine the impact of NH4+-N or Ca2+ nutrition of the response of the two wheat vareties to al. In various concentrations of al, olmil induced lower ph levels than suwon 205 in nutrient solutions and the reduction of root length and dry weight was greater in olmil than in suwon 205. The uptake of al was greater in root than in shoot of the two wheat varieties, but more increased in root of olimil. also the uptake of ca, mg, k and p was inhibited by al especialy decrease of ca and p uptake in roots of olmil was more pronounced than in those of suwon 205. In nutrient solutions that contained NH4+-N plus 9ppm al, the ability of both varienties to raise the ph was reduced as the level of NH4+-N in nutrient solutions was increased, and al-sensitive olimil induced lower ph than did al-tolerant suwon 205. al toxicity was intensified by increasing the concentration of NH4+-N in nurient and toxic effect was greater in olmil. al toxicity in the two wheat varieties was steadily increased as the ca level of nutrient solution was reduced, sepecialy this effect was stronger in al-sensitive olmil than in al-tolerant suwon 205.

  • This study was conducted to investigated the changes in the nutrient components ($NO_3{^-}-N$, $NH_4{^+}-N$, $PO_4{^{3-}}P$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$) and environmental parameters (electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH) on the leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown with hydroponics. Recirculating hydroponic cultivation system was consisted of planting port, LED lamp, water tank, and circulating pump for hydroponic. Nutrient solution was used in the standard solution for Japan vegetables experimental station and commercial hydroponic. The result showed that electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and pH, depending on the growth of lettuce decreased continuously. With the growth of the lettuce, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, phosphate phosphorus were required for periodic replacement. The number of pH compensation due to the growth of lettuce are the most high. The concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ during the lettuce growth showed no significant change. However, $K^+$ concentration increased due to the replacement with nitrogen and phosphorus. Electric conductivity and total dissolved solids with total nutrient concentration showed the linear relationship and the correlation coefficient $R^2$ were 0.8601 and the 0.827, respectively.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the nutrition absorption pattern in the growth stages and develope the optimal nutrient solution hydroponically grown the tomato in closed substrate culture system with the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan into 1/2S, 1 S, and 2S. When plant was grown in 1/2 S, the growth and yield were high and the pH and EC in the rooting zone were stable. Suitable composition of nutrient solution for tomato was $NO_3-N$ 7.1, $PO_{4}$-P 2.1, K 4.0, Ca 3.1, Mg 1.2, and $SO_{4}-S\;1.2\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the early growth stage and $NO_3-N$ 6.5, $PO_4-P$ 2.3, K 3.4, Ca 3.1, Mg 1.1, and $SO_4-S\;1.1\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the late growth stage by calculating a rate of nutrient and water uptake. To estimate the suitability for the nutrient solution of tomato in a development of optimum nutrient solution of tomato developed by Wonkwang university in korea (WU), plant was grown in perlite substrate supplied with different solution and strengths(S) by research station for greenhouse vegetable and floricultuin in the Netherlands (Proefstation voor tuinbouw onder glas te Naaldwijk; PTG) of 1/2 S, 1 S and 2 S, respectively, The growth was good at the PTG and WU of 2 S in early growth stage, and at the WU 2S in late growth stage. The highest yield of tomato obtained in the WU of 2 S, although blossom-end rot was appeared in all treatments. pH and EC in root zone of WU of 2 S were stable during the early and late growth stage. Therefore when plant was grown in WU of 2 S, N and P content in the nutrient solution need to low, according N and P content of their leaves were high in WU of 2 S.

  • This experiment was carried out investigation of optimum concentration of supply nutrient solution in hydroponics of sweet pepper using coir substrates (coconut dust fiber=70% : 30%, v/v). During the growing period, it was found out that the electric conductivity (EC) would increase in proportion to the supply nutrient concentration but it was in inverse proportion to the moisture content. The pH of drainage was stable, while EC was high showing EC $7.3\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in EC $4.0\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of supply nutrient concentration. Also, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were high. Plant length was no difference by the supply nutrient concentration. Photosynthesis rate was generally high in supply nutrient concentration EC$4.0\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Fruit weight was heavy in supply nutrient concentration EC $4.0\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, fruit shape was close to a regular square in supply nutrient concentration EC $3.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$.
