Anthracnose symptoms on young cabbages were found in cabbage nursery fields in Jangheung area of Korea in 1998. The symptoms developed on seedlings, leaves, and stems of young cabbages(Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.). The casual fungus was identified as Calletotrichum dernatium(Fr.) Grove based on morphological and cultural characteristics. Similar symptoms were observed on the cabbage when artificially inoculated on the plant leaves. The fungus was reisolated from the symptoms of the inoculated plant.

To investigate soil management practices for increasing tree growth in arid regions of China, Xinjiang poplar (Populus alba var. pyramidalis) seedlings were planted in a nursery and windbreak and were treated with fertilizers (nitrogen and phosphorus) and absorbents (artificial; K-SAM and natural: Yuho (Artemisia ordosica)) at Dengkou in Inner Mongolia. Seedling height, diameter at breast height (DBH), biomass, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations were measured 1.5 years after the treatments. Soil texture was sandy loam for nursery and clay loam for windbreak, soil pH was 8.78 for nursery and 8.51 for windbreak, and total soil N concentration was 0.06% for nursey and 0.08% for windbreak. [n general, seedling height and DBH increased in the N fertilizer treatment compared to control or other treatments both in nursery and windbreak. Also seedling growth increased after the treatments of artificial and natural absorbents in windbreak. Total above- and belowground biomass increased after the N + P treatment. Foliage N and P concentrations following N and/or P treatments were same in the nursey, however, they significantly increased in the windbreak indicating N deficiency. It appeared that N was a limiting factor for early growth of Xinjiang poplar seedlings and artificial and natural absorbents (K-SAM and Yuho) would be useful to increase seedling growth in the arid region.
An extensive investigation has been made for the possible utilization of polypropylene spunbonded fabrics in rice seedling nursery. Considering the cropping systems available in southern part of Korea, sowing dates were fixed at April 5 and April 20 for single cropping and May 6 and May 26 for double cropping. Nursery period was fixed to 35 days for each sowing date. Four different thickness of polypropylene spunbonded fabrics, 40, 60, 80, 100 g/$m^2$, were tested in rice seedling nursery. The temperature and light intensity were not significantly different among the thickness of polypropylene spunbonded fabrics. Light intensity was significantly reduced in polypropylene spunbonded fabric (72.2 Klux) compared with polyethylene mm (85.5 Klux), however, the reduced light intensity was enough for seedling growth. The temperature in the polypropylene spunbonded fabric covering during low air temperature was higher than that in polyethylene mm tunnel. At transplanting, the rice seedlings grown in polypropylene spunbonded fabric condition was shorter (17cm) but healthier than those in polyethylene mm (23cm). The estimated possible nursery periods using the polypropylene spunbonded fabric covering may start from April 1 at Chinju (plain area in Southern Korea, 20m altitude) and April 15 at Susang (mountainous area, 430m altitude). Labour hours and cost were reduced by about 28% and 48%, respectively.

We measured seedling growth, foliar nutrient and extract concentrations of 3-year-old Ginkgo biloba seedlings growing in a nursery following a single fertilization with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and nitrogen plus phosphorus (N+P) fertilizers. Fertilization did not change foliage, stem and root biomass of the seedlings except for the high N+P treatment, Foliar N and P concentrations following fertilization varied according to the amount of fertilizers. In general, foliar N and P concentrations increased with fertilization, but fertilization with 400kg N/ha and 100kg P/ha decreased foliar N and P concentrations, respectively. Seedling growth and foliar nutrient concentrations showed that N and P were the growth-limiting nutrients in our study site. It was found that fertilization reduced the concentrations of secondary metabolites (Ginkgo flavon glycosides and terpene lactones) in foliages. It seemed there was a relationship between foliage biomass production and secondary chemicals in G. biloba seedlings.

The purpose of this study was to develop a method to effectively control mosses that are generated in container. To meet the goals, 6 kinds of chemical agents at different concentrations were applied to the container containing seedlings of Pinus densiflora with growing liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) and Chamaecyparis obtusa with growing haircap moss (Polytrichum commune). It was found that quinoclamine was the most effective chemical agent to control mosses. Quinoclamine was effective in controlling liverwort (100% controlled) and haircap moss (95.5% controlled) at its concentration of 0.9 g/l. Next to quinoclamine, it was found that haircap moss and liverwort was effectively controlled by pyroligneous liquid which was followed by flumioxazin and oxyfluorfen. Seedling damages were observed in both two species treated with higher concentration of flumioxazin and oxyfluorfen.
Strain IV caused highest reduction of germination and caused abnormal elongation of all part of the plant which finally died. Milyang 23 and Nampungbyeo formed mesocotyl. Samnambyeo and Jinjubyeo did not formed mesocotyl on the soil surface in nursery boxes when they were planted on soil infested with each strain of F. moniliforme. Infected seedlings with mesocotyl recovered after transplanting in the the field. The most frequency of Strain IV was isolated from infected rices and this strain was isolated from all part of rice. When rice seedling infected with Strain IV were transplanted in paddy field, most of rice showed Bakanae symptom. Ear emergence of rice was more delayed when seedlings infected with Strain IV were transplanted than that of healthy plant. Number of panicle per hill and grain yield from rice when infected rice seedling by Strain IV were transplanted were more decreased than that of the healthy plant in paddy field.

One-year-old seedlings of Ginkgo biloba, potted in three different soils (nursery soil, mixed and sandy soil), were treated with simulated acid rain (pH 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) and tap water (control, pH 6.4) during the growing seasons (1985. 4. 28 - 1985. 10. 19) to examine the effects of acid rain on growth and physiological characteristics, and the relations between seedling growth and physiological characteristics. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. The effects of soil types on the total, top and root dry weight per seedling were significant at 5% level, and those of the pH of the rain treated at 1% level. The total dry weight of the pH 3.0 sub-plots was the highest for nursery soil, while for mixed and sandy soils, those of the control and the pH 5.0 sub-plots were the highest, respectively. 2. The leaf surface areas of pH 2.0 sub-plots severely decreased after July, but those of other sub-plots were not affected. The correlations between growth and leaf surface area differed among soil-types, however, the highest positive correlation was found in September. 3. The injured leaf rate increased with decreasing pH levels of acid rain. Highly negative correlations between growth and injured leaf rate were found. 4. The lower the pH level of acid rain treated was, the more the chlorophyll content was measured at the beginning of treatment, and the more severely it decreased at late growing season. A negative correlations were found in August, September and Octobfer. 5. The photosynthetic ability decreased rapidly after July with decreasing pH levels. A highly positive correlation between growth and photosynthetic ability was found in August.

To make a new fairy ring of Tricholoma matsutake in situ, the way of production and transplanting of ectomycorrhizal seedlings of T. matsutake using Pinus densiflora was investigated after transplanting from 2000 to 2005 as well as the method to improve their survival rate for the fungus. For the production of ectomycorrhizal pine seedlings, the seedlings planted at the edge of fairy ring of T. matsutake in November showed 97% of the survival rate, while those planted in April showed 80% of the rate. For the complete infection of the T. matsutake, it required more than two years after planting. The infection rate of mycelia for the ectomycorrhizal seedlings was 17.6% when the natural seedlings were used, whereas it was relatively low when the seedlings prepared from the nursery were used. The survival of T. matsutake mycelium reached up to 22% by the transplanting in April, while the mycelium transplanted in October and November showed less than 5% of the survival. The survival of T. matsutake on the transplanted seedlings was the highest in the seedlings having 50% of infection rate before transplanting. Excavation of the ectomycorrhizal seedling to examine the vitality of ectomycorrhizal roots of T. matsutake resulted in the perishing of them. Therefore, the method using a 'rice bag triers' to check living mycelium of T. matsutake without digging of transplanted seedlings was introduced in this study. In addition, it is recommended that the examination has to be conducted at least two years after transplanting.
This study was conducted to clarify reasonable root pruning and transplanting density for efficient production of seedlings of Quercus species, which is a representative planting species in Korea. Seedlings of Q. acutissima and Q. serrata, which were pruned roots by 5 cm, showed poorer above-ground and root growth compared to those pruned by 10 cm and 15 cm, and growth performance of seedlings pruned by 10 cm was shown similarly those pruned by 15 cm. The growth performance of seedlings transplanted in the density of below 64 seedlings per $m^2$ was greater than those transplanted in the density of over 81 seedlings per $m^2$. Therefore, one-year-old seedlings of Q. acutissima and Q. serrata should be transplanted in the density of 64 seedlings per $m^2$ after pruning their roots by 10 cm to obtain excellent growth performance and increase the efficiency of transplanting. The results of this study can be used as baseline for producing superior seedlings of Q. acutissima and Q. serrata at nursery and understanding early transplanting performance of the species.
One-year-old seedlings of Ginkgo biloba were treated with various simulated acid rains(pH 2.0, pH 3.0, pH 9.0 and pH 5.0) to examine the effects of simulated acid rain on the chemical properties of the tested soil. The seedlings were grown in a pot($4500cm^3$)containing one of three different soils(nursery soil, mixed soil and sandy soil). Simulated acid rain was made by diluting sulfuric and nitric acid solution($H^1SO^4$ : $HNO^3$ =3 : 1, V/V) with tap water and tap water(pH 6.4), and treated by 5mm each time for three minutes during the growing seasons(April to October 1985). Acid rain treatments were done three times per week to potted seedlings by spraying the solutions. The chemical properties of potting media were compared among three soil types as well as among the various pH levels. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. Exchangeable calcium and magnesium contents and base saturation of the soil decreased with decreasing pH levels of acid rain, and their decreasing rates were as follows : sandy soil was the highest, followed by mixed and nursery soils, However, exchangeable aluminum content rather increased as the pH levels decreased. 2. Available phosphate in the soil decreased as the pH levels of acid rain decreased. Its content increased in nursery soil, compared with those before acid gain treatment, Gut decreased in mined and sandy soils. 3. Soil sulfate and nitrate contents increased remarkably as the pH levels decreased, and the only significant difference in the sulfate was found among the pH levels. Soil sulfate content was the highest in nursery soil, followed by mixed and sandy soils.
