It is an aim of this study to perform extensive numerical study for analyzing the anisotropic turbulence effects on spatial and temporal behaviors of diesel sprays after wall impingement. The turbulence model of Durbin is used for comparisons with the $k-\varepsilon$ model. The turbulence-induced dispersions of droplets are considered to describe the anisotropy of turbulence effectively and the spray/wall interactions are simulated using the model of Lee and Ryou. The present study investigates the internal structures of impinging diesel sprays such as Sauter mean diameter (SMD), loca1 droplet velocities, and local gas velocities and also compares the results predicted by two turbulence models with the experimental data. The Durbin's model considering the anisotropy of turbulence predicts both gas and droplet tangential velocities better than the$k-\varepsilon$ model does. It is concluded that the anisotropy of turbulence should be considered in simulating impinging diesel sprays.
This paper presents a case study and numerical investigation to study the hydro-mechanical response of a shallow landslide in unsaturated slopes subjected to rainfall infiltration using a coupled model. The coupled model was interpreted in details by expressing the balance equations for soil mixture and the coupled constitutive equations. The coupled model was verified against experimental data from the shearing-infiltration triaxial tests. A real case of shallow landslide occurred on Mt. Umyeonsan, Seoul, Korea was employed to explore the influence of rainfall infiltration on the slope stability during heavy rainfall. Numerical results showed that the coupled model accurately predicted the poromechanical behavior of a rainfall-induced landslide by simultaneously linking seepage and stress-strain problems. It was also found that the coupled model properly described progress failure of a slope in a highly transient condition. Through the comparisons between the coupled and uncoupled models, the coupled model provided more realistic analysis results under rainfall. Consequently, the coupled model was found to be feasible for the stability and seepage analysis of practical engineering problems.

This article investigates numerical modeling of surface piercing propeller (SPP) in unsteady open water condition using boundary element method. The home code based on BEM has been developed for the prediction of propeller performance, unsteady ventilation pattern and cross flow effect on partially submerged propellers. To achieve accurate results and correct behavior extraction of the ventilation zone, finely mesh has generated around the propeller and especially in the situation intersection of propeller with the free surface. Hydrodynamic coefficients and ventilation pattern on key blade of SPP are calculated in the different advance coefficients. The values obtained from this numerical simulation are plotted and the results are compared with experiments data and ventilation observations. The predicted ventilated open water performances of the SPP as well as ventilation pattern are in good agreement with experimental data. Finally, the results of the BEM code/experiment comparisons are discussed.
This paper presents a non-isotropic turbulence modeling of flows over bedforms. The Reynolds stress model is used for the turbulence closure. In the model, Launder, Reece, and Rodi's model and Hanjalic and Launder's model are employed f3r the pressure strain correlation term and the diffusion term, respectively. The mean flow and turbulence structures are simulated and compared with profiles measured in the experiments. The numerical solutions from two-equation turbulence models are also provided for comparisons. The Reynolds stress model yields the separation length of eddy similar to the other numerical results. Using the developed model, the resistance coefficients are also estimated for the flows at different Froude numbers. Karim's (1999) relationship is used to determine the bedform geometry. It is found that the values of the form drag and the skin friction are very similar to those obtained by the other turbulence models. meaning higher values of the form drag and lower values of the skin friction compared with the empirical formulas.
The effects of diffuser shapes on the flowfields of a small-size turbo-compressor have been investigated numerically and experimentally. The optimal design of elements shapes is important to develop the high efficiency turbo-compressor. Typical range of rotating speed for a small-size turbo-compressor is 40,000-70,000rpm. Numerical analyses were conducted to the rectangular and conical shapes of diffuser Three-dimensional, steady and viscous governing equations were solved by SIMPLE algorithm. To confirm the numerical results, the experimental measurements for the static pressure and temperature at the inlet and outlet boundaries were performed. Comparisons of these results were done, and the reasonable agreements were acquired.

A numerical code which can simulate unsteady, incompressible and 3-dimensional flows in an engine cylinder has been developed. The governing equations based on the cylindrical coordinate are discretized by the finite volume method with staggered variable arrangements. A geometric conservation rule is also incorporated into the simulation code in order to deal with a moving boundary problem. For the unsteady simulation, a fractional step method is adopted. The law of wall is applied to the wall boundaries and standard $k-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is used to describe the in-cylinder turbulent flow. The model cylinder has one eccentric port, flat piston and flat cylinder-head. The comparisons with experimental data show fairly well qualitative agreement.
A method for numerical simulation of the carbonization process in manufacturing of a carbon-carbon composite is developed. A general theory, which consists of analyses of heat and mass transfer together with stress and displacement predictions, is constructed. A homogeneous, single phase, isotropic material is selected and a computer program is developed for an arbitrary 2-dimensional geometry using FEM. Material properties are obtained through experiments and references, and are modeled effectively to serve the simulation purpose. The validity of the simulation is verified through several comparisons with experimental data, where close agreements are observed. Finally, examples of actual applications are considered to exhibit the capability and utilization of the code in process optimization.
Under the assumption of potential flow, free-surface flows around a 2-dimensional hydrofoil are calculated by high-order spoctral/boundary-integral method. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear interactions between hydrofoil and free-surface can be simulated in time-domain. Comparisons of the calculated free-surface profiles with other experimental results show relatively good agreements. As another example, free-surface flow generated by the heaving and translating hydrofoil is calculated and discussed.
An evaluation of one algebraic and two one-equation eddy viscosity-transport turbulence closure models as implemented to the CFDS(Characteristic Flux Difference Splitting) scheme is presented for the efficient computation of the turbulent flow. Comparisons of Baldwin-Lomax model as algebraic turbulence model and Baldwin-Barth and Spalart-Allmaras model as one-equation turbulence model are presented for three test cases for 3-dimensional flow. The numerical result of the CFDS schem is examined through comparison with the experimental data.
