  • The Vietnamese language has a specific property related to the zero in the name-number system. This study was conducted to examine the impact of linguistic differences and of the zero's position in a number on a transcoding task (verbal number into Arabic number). Vietnamese children and French-speaking Belgian children, from grades 3 to 6, participated in the study. The success rate and the type of errors they made varied, depending on their grade and language. At Grade 4, Vietnamese children showed performances equivalent to Grade 6 Belgian children. Our results confirmed the support provided by language to the understanding and performances in a transcoding task. Results also showed that a syntactic zero is easier to manipulate than a lexical zero for Vietnamese children. The relative influence of language and the source of errors are discussed.

  • Ultra high-resolution content, the file size is very large, therefore existing encoding techniques, it is not possible to transmit via the network. Efficient use of the network encoder HEVC corporation can be transferred. Compression requires a lot of time because it requires a distributed transcoding system. Distributed transcoding system is a distributed data store, and then encoded using a large number of nodes. The disadvantage of distributed transcoding system for distributed information is exposed or vulnerable to attack by internal managers. In this paper, when the super high definition content transcoding, distributed transcoding system does not guarantee the confidentiality of the problem to solve. We are using SNA, HEVC encoded content data encrypted using the secret distributing scheme was. Consequently, secure shared transcoding is possible, the internal administrator could prevent the attack.

  • Recently, for satisfying many application demands such as coding delay, computing power, transporting channel characteristic, etc, many profiles are supported in video coding standards. Therefore, in transcoding between same standards or between other standards, the functional difference of profiles supported by application occur many problems. In this paper, transcoding MPEG-2 main profile to H.264/AVC baseline profile which has restriction in the number of reference frame is focused. In this case, the bidirectional prediction supported in MPEG-2 main profile is not supported in H.264/AVC baseline profile. Also, in the restriction of reference frame, motion vectors in the MPEG-2 decoder as predictor should be adjusted. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is based on the characteristic of which motion. vector is uniform according to the distance from reference frame. The adaptive search techniques through the determination of the uniformity extremely reduce the computational complexity.

  • Owing to the improved wireless communication technologies, it is possible to provide streaming service of multimedia with PDAs and mobile phones in addition to desktop PCs. Since mobile client devices have low computing power and low network bandwidth due to wireless network, the transcoding technology to adapt media for mobile client devices considering their characteristics is necessary. Transcoding servers transcode the source media to the target media within corresponding grades and provide QoS in real-time. In particular, an effective load balancing policy for transcoding servers is inevitable to support QoS for large scale mobile users. In this paper, the resource weighted load distribution policy is proposed for a fair load balance and a more scalable performance in cluster-based transcoding servers. Our proposed policy is based on the resource weighted table and number of maximum supported users, which are pre-computed for each pre-defined grade. We implement the proposed policy on cluster-based transcoding servers and evaluate its fair load distribution and scalable performance with the number of transcoding servers.

  • The purpose of the paper is to enable a format transcoding between a heterogeneous compression format in a real time, and to enhance the compression ratio using characteristics of the compressed frame. In this paper, for the heterogeneous format transcoding, we tried to transcode from MPEG2 having a lower compression ratio to H.263 having a higher compression ratio. After analyzing MPEG 2 bit stream and H.263 bit stream of the same original video, we found that the number of intra coded macro blocks in MPEG 2 data is much higher than the number of the intra coded macro blocks in H.263 data. In the process of P frame generation, a intra coded macro block is generated when a motion estimation value representing the similarity between the previous frame and current frame does not meet a threshold. Especially the intra coded macro block has a great impact on the compression ratio. Hence the paper, we tried to minimize the number of intra coded macro blocks in H.263 data stream which is transcoded from MPEG 2 in a compressed domain. For the purpose, we propose a guided search method for transcoding the INTRA coded block into INTER coded block using the information about motion vectors surrounding the intra macro block in order to minimize the complexity of the motion estimation process. The experimental results show that the transcoding of MPEG 2 into H.263 can be done in a real time successfully.

  • A blind video watermarking scheme for providing safety, authenticity, and copyright protection is proposed in this paper, which is robust to MPEG-4 SVC and multimedia transcoding. In proposed method, embedding and detecting of watermark is performed based on base layer with considering spatial SVC. To be robust from temporal SVC, our method embeds repeatedly a permutated character with ordering number per one frame. Also for robustness from multimedia transcoding and FGS, the method is embedded watermark in low middle frequency of each frame adaptively based on DCT in ROI. Through experimental results, invisibility of the watermark is confirmed and robustness of the watermark against the spatial SVC, temporal SVC, FGS and video transcoding between MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 SVC is also verified.

  • Recently, many web-enabled personal devices are becoming available for connecting to the internet, and there are many use]-s who access the internet from hand-held devices such as PDAs, cell phones. Most pages on the world wide web are designed for displaying on desktop computers with color monitor having at least 640$\times$480 resolution. But these devices do not have the same rendering capabilities as desktop computer, so the same web content needs to be rendered differently on hand-held devices. Therefore, there have been a variety of web transcoding techniques proposed to solve the problem between the web contents and hand-held devices. In this paper, we propose a web transcoding system(WebPrism) for real-time information providing using the semi-automatic transcoding method. The semi-automatic web transcoding method is a good solution when if mobile users access the limited number of web pages which layout is not changed frequently, also WebPrism is implemented as a desktop PC and experimental result shows that the proposed system generates the best looking document for a given display size of PDA.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient requantization method for INTRA frames in heterogeneous transcoding from MPEG-1 to MPEG-4 simple profile. The quantizer for MPEG-1 INTRA MB usually uses a quantization weighting matrix while the quantizer for MPEG-4 simple profile doesn't. As a result, the quantization step sizes of the two quantizers may not be the same even for the same quantization parameter. Due to this mismatch in the quantization step site, the transcoded MPEG-4 sequence suffers from serious quality degradation and the number of bits produced by transcoding increases from the original MPEG-1 video sequence. To solve these problems, we propose an efficient method to find a near-optimum reconstruction level in the transcoder. We also present a PDF (probability distribution function) estimation method for the original DCT coefficients of MPEG-1 video sequence, which is required for the proposed requantization. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives $0.3{\sim}0.6dB$ improvement in PSNR over the conventional method, even at the reduced bit-rate about $5{\sim}7%$ from the conventional method.

  • The effect of the code conversion process of Korean script (Hangul), also known as words for numbers, was investigated using event-related potentials (ERPs) during mental arithmetic operations. Study subjects were asked to determine whether the arithmetic results of a given target stimuli were correctly matched. Visual inspection and statistics of mean ERPs showed stimulus type-dependent processing rather than task-dependent processing. Results of addition and multiplication tasks revealed that the overall temporal profiles of the Arabic numerals were similar to the Hangul words for numbers. The only exception to this observation was a delayed positive-slope peak occurring around 300 ms, which was likely related to the encoding process of Hangul words for numbers to Arabic-digits, defined as a 'transcoding-related potential.' Source analysis confirmed that the topography of different waveforms for the two conditions was attributed to a single dipole located in the left temporo-parietal area; this area is known to be involved in Hangul words for number processing. These results suggest that the initial processing for encoding words for numbers was followed by arithmetic operations without direct access of internal number representation. • This paper presents a blind video watermarking algorithm that has the robustness against spatial, temporal, and SNR scalability and transcoding for the copyright protection of video contents in heterogeneous multimedia service. The proposed process of watermark embedding and detecting is accomplished on base layer for considering spatial scalability. The watermark consists of the string and the ordering number of string for considering temporal scalability. Thus, each of frames has the bitstream of one character and a ordering number of its character. To robust against FGS, the proposed algorithm quantizes low and middle frequency coefficients in ROI region of each of frames and embeds its watermark bitstream into the specific bits of the quantized coefficients. Experimental results verified that the proposed algorithm satisfies the invisibility of watermark and also has the robustness against spatial scalability, temporal scalability and FGS.
