  • Microbiological populations and the sterility of commercial powdered products treated with gamma irradiation at 0~10 kGy were investigated before using them as ingredients for a non-cooked Saengsik product. We evaluated a total of 14 powdered products: 8 powdered cereals, 3 powdered tubers, and 3 powdered leafy vegetables. The total numbers of bacterial populations in non-irradiated powdered cereals, tubers, and leafy vegetables were 2.7~6.9, 5.6~6.0, and $5.3{\sim}6.8\;log\; CFU{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. Moreover, coliform bacteria were not indicated in adlay, millet, germinated brown rice, soybean, and mulberry leaves powder within detection limit ($2.0\;log\; CFU{\cdot}g^{-1}$). The number of Bacillus cereus exceeded $3.0\;log\; CFU{\cdot}g^{-1}$ (the maximum limit for Saengsik products) in all samples, excluding perilla seeds, buckwheat, barley, oat, potato, and Jerusalem artichoke powder. However, a dose of 6 kGy of gamma irradiation reduced the microbiological populations in all samples, and all the powdered products met the microbial requirements for Saengsik products. Futhermore, it was confirmed that all microorganisms in the 9 powdered products, except fermented brown rice, sweet potatoes, and 3 leafy vegetables, were sterilized by 10 kGy of gamma irradiation.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of slow-release fertilizer application on quality elevation of onion (Allium cepa L.) in southwestern sea. The slow-release fertilizers used were NIAST (National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology) I, II, CDU (Crotonylidene Diurea), UF (Urea-Formaldehydes), and IBDU (Isobutylidene Diurea) 30, 50. Growth of the onion plant treated with slow-release fertilizer showed better than the control. However, a rate of infected plant to downy mildew was low as compared with control. Chlorophyll and total nitrogen contents were high in control, whereas firmness, soluble solid content, number and thickness of scaly leaves were high in slow-release fertilizer plot. In early maturing onion, total marketable bulb yield was higher in slow-release fertilizer plot than all other fertilizer treatments. Total marketable bulb yield in late maturing onion treated with slow-release fertilizer was slightly decreased. Decaying loss and the rate of sprouting during storage period decreased in slow-release fertilizer application. In summary, application of slow-release fertilizer increased marketable yield, storability after harvest and also reduced labor needs for top dressing.

  • Evegradies 71' kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was grown at 160,000 plants per ha in a volcanic ash soil in Jeju island to determine the optimum frequency of split N application fer forage production. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied with 240 kg/ha, and frequencies of the split N applications were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 times. Plant height averaged across two harvests increased from 187 to 201cm as N was split-applied from one to three applications and then decreased to 201cm in five applications. This pattern held for the number of branches and leaves per plant stem diameter and weight of plant per plant. Fresh forage yield increased from 91.8 to 114.2 MT/ha. dry matter yield from 12.70 to 16.6 MT/ha, crude protein yield from 1.75 to 2.48MT/ha, and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield from 5.39 to 7.63 MT/ha as N was split-applied from one to four applications, and then decreased to 106.6, 15.0, 2.32, and 7.22 MT/ha in five applications, respectively As N was split-applied from one to five applications, crude protein content increased from 13.8 to 15.4%. ether extract content from 4.1 to 5.9%, and TDN content from 42.4 to 48.1%. but crude fiber decreased from 38.2 to 37.1% and crude ash content from 11.5 to 8.6%. Nitrogen free extract content was about 19.0% regardless of cutting height.

  • Jeju native soybean was grown at five plant densities(30${\times}$30cm, 30${\times}$25cm, 30${\times}$20cm, 30${\times}$15cm, 30${\times}$10cm) from May 11 to September 10 in 2002 in Jeju island to determine the optimum plant density. Days to flowering was delayed from 94 days to 98 days as increasing of plant density. Plant height was 103cm at 30${\times}$30cm plot, as plant density increased, was 117cm at 30${\times}$10cm plot. As plant density increased, the number of branches and leaves, stem diameter, weight of plant, root length and weight of root grew low. As plant density increased from 30${\times}$30cm to 30${\times}$15cm, fresh forage, dry matter, crude protein and TDN yield increased 23.3∼36.5MT/ha, 5.1∼8.0MT/ha, 0.8∼1.4MT/ha and 2.9∼4.8MT/ha respectively, but decreased at 30${\times}$10cm plot. As plant density increased, crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN content increased 16.2∼17.9%, 2.7∼3.7%, 37.6∼40.7% and 56.1∼60.0% respectively. In contrast with this, crude fiber and crude ash decreased 34.9 ∼30.8% and 8.6∼7.2% respectively. To reach the climax of forage yield was estimated optimum plant density to be 30${\times}$15cm.

  • To establish a method for measuring varietal resistance against rice stem maggot in field and pot, 20 varieties were used in $1981{\sim}1983$. The degree of injured stems by the 1st generation larvae was significantly correlated with that of injured panicles by the 2nd ($r=0.864^{**}$). There was no ovipositional preference in rice stem maggot. The larval mortality after artificial infestation varied widly from 5.6 to 100% in varieties and that of the resistant varieties was high after boring. There was a negative correlation between number of injured leaves and larval mortality after artificial infestation ($'81:r=-0.833^{**},\;'82:r=-0.918^{**}$). It is considered that larval mortality mainly caused by antibiosis and larval mortality 20 days after infestation on rice seedlings is ideal for evaluating the varietal resistance to rice stem maggot. Resistant varieties are Nagdongbyeo, Jinjubyeo and Chucheongbyeo susceptible varieties, Keumgangbyeo, Milyang 23, Baigyangbyeo and Milyang 30.

  • A new cultivar of Hibiscus 'Red Bohanjae' (Hibiscus syriacus 'Red Bohanjae') was developed after crossing between Hibiscus syriacus 'Andong' (♀) with white flowers and Hibiscus syriacus 'Samchully' (♂) with pink flowers to improve flower quality and growth habit. The Hibiscus breeding program was initiated in 2002, and H. syriacus 'Red Bohanjae' was preliminarily selected as '02-RV-17' in 2003 due to its stable flower quality with rich pink flowers and small tree type. The selected line was further evaluated for growth characteristics, leaf shape, leaf size, flowering characteristics, and tested for distinctness, homogeneity, and stability during 2004-2007. The characteristics preserved by grafting. 'Red Bohanjae' showed a small growth habit with slightly upright branches. The tree had potential use as a potted plant or bonsai because of its dwarf form. The new cultivar 'Red Bohanjae' had violet-pink color flowers (RHS N78C) with red eye spots, small size (9.2 cm) and spatulate (I-type) petals. Leaves were 4.2 cm long and 2.3 cm wide. After the evaluation of plant characteristics for 3 years (2005-2007), it was registered as cultivar 'Red Bohanjae' (4118, plant variety protection rights number) in 2012. 'Red Bohanjae' having violet-pink flowers with red eye and dwarf tree form seems to be suitable for pot or bonsai cultivation in both indoor and outdoor conditions.

  • Economic injury level and control thresholds for the management of beet army worm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were evaluated on chinese cabbage of two different planting time. Two inoculation times were tested for each planting and the number of inoculated larva was 10, 20, 40, 80, respectively. Damages of leaves by first inoculation were 63.2% after eight days planting on 80 larva inoculation plot. By the second inoculation, those were below 50% after 20 days planting on the end of September. The linear relationships between population density and yield reduction were as following; Y = -10.62x + 867.9 ($R^2\;=\;0.643$) for 5 days and Y=-6.432x + 1074 ($R^2\;=\;0.720$) for 20 days. Based on these results the economic injury level was 5.4 larva for five days and 9.0 larva for 20 days per 20 chinese cabbage. The control thresholds calculated by 80% level of economic injury level were 4.3 and 7.2 larva, respectively.

  • Plant factory can control artificially the environments for crop cultivation, so they can produce high quality agricultural products all year round. This study was carried to select suitable kohlrabi cultivar for hydroponics in a closed-type plant factory system. We used three cultivars of red kohlrabi, 'Asac kohl', 'Kolibri', and 'Purple king' as plant materials. The artificial light source was LED light, light intensity and photoperiod were $249{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and 12/12 hours (day/night period), respectively. Hydroponic cultivation type was used circulating deep flow technique. At 43 days after transplanting, fresh weight of whole plant and tuber and leaf area were not significantly different among cultivars. Shoot dry weight and tuber dry weight were highest in 'Asac kohl' cultivar, and number of leaves was highest in 'Purple king' cultivar. Sugar content and yield were highest in 'Asac kohl' cultivar. Considering the growth and marketable yields, 'Asac kohl' was the optimal kohlrabi cultivar for hydroponic cultivation in a closed-type plant factory system.
