  • The intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole and a single-hole diesel nozzle were experimentally investigated. The hole number of the multi-hole nozzle was 5, and the hole diameter of the 5-hole and the single-hole nozzle was the same as d$\_$n/=0.32 ㎜ with the constant hole length to diameter ratio(l$\_$n//d$\_$n/=2.81). The droplet diameters of the spray, including the time-resolved droplet diameter, SMD (Sauter mean diameter) and AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) , injected intermittently from the two nozzles into the still ambient were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer). Through the time-resolved evolutions of the droplet diameter, it was found that the structure of the multi-hole and the single-hole nozzle spray consisted of the three main parts : (a) the leading edge affected by surrounding air. and composed of small droplets; (b) the central part surrounded by the leading edge and mixing flow region and scarcely affected by the resistance of air, (c) the trailing edge formed by the passage of the central part. The SMD decreases gradually with the increase in the radial distance, and the constant value is obtained at the outer region of the radial distance (normalized by hole diameter) of 7-8 and 6 for the 5-hole and single-hole nozzle, respectively. The SMD along the centerline of the spray decrease shapely with the increase in the axial distance after showing the maximum value near the nozzle tip. The SMD remains the constant value near the axial distance(normalized by hole diameter) of 150 and 180 for the 5-hole and the single-hole nozzle, respectively.

  • Recent common-rail injector of a diesel engine needs more smaller nozzle hole to meet the stringent emission regulation. But, small nozzle hole diameter can cause nozzle coking which is occurred due to the deposits of post-combustion products. Nozzle coking has a negative effect on the performance of fuel injector because it obstructs the fuel flow inside a nozzle hole. In this study DFSS (Design for six sigma) method was applied to find the effect of nozzle design parameter on nozzle coking. Total 9 injector samples were chosen and tested at diesel engine. The results show that nozzle hole diameter and K-factor have more effect on nozzle coking than A-mass and hole length. Large hole diameter and A-mass, small hole length and K-factor give more positive performance on nozzle coking in these experimental conditions. But, a performance about nozzle coking and exhaust gas emission shows the opposite tendency. Further study is needed to find the relation between nozzle coking and emission characteristic for the optimization of injector nozzle design.

  • A single spray plume is the basic unit of the entire spray plume and is an important factor in understanding the spray characteristics. However, since the multi-hole GDI injector has a narrow spray angle, the superposition of the spray plumes occurs severely. Therefore, the spray uniformity and the spray atomization characteristics of a single spray plume were analyzed in this study using a single-hole GDI injector. Five single-hole GDI injectors with different nozzle hole diameters were used in the experiment. The uniformity of the spray was evaluated through the analysis of the spray pattern images. In addition, the atomization characteristics were compared using the diameter distribution of the spray droplets obtained using PDPA. As a result, the larger diameter of the nozzle hole, the less uniformity of the spray, and the injection pressure did not have a significant effect on the spray uniformity. It is judged that the surface roughness of the injector has a greater effect on spray uniformity than the diameter of the nozzle hole. Also, the size of the spray droplets increased sharply when the diameter of the nozzle hole was 230 ㎛.

  • In this study, injection flow rates and material of the solenoid sealing of the injectors were improved for the development of a di-methyl Ether(DME) common-rail system. To deliver the same amount of energy provided by injection pressure of diesel $P_{inj}$ = 160 MPa, the DME injectors need to have larger diameter of nozzle hole and more No. of hole at low injection pressure of $P_{inj}$ = 40~50 MPa. The simplified nozzle flow model, which takes account of nozzle geometry and injection condition, was employed in order to design the concept of a injector nozzle such as No. of hole, diameter of hole and diameter of needle seat, etc. Injection amount and rate were tested by diesel and DME test stand. As a result, the diameter of nozzle hole were enlarged by 0.25 mm. The diameter of the orifice in the high pressure line was increased by 1.0 mm to maintain hydraulic force in the nozzle. The material of the solenoid sealing was changed to HNBR, which was strong against the corrosive. Experimental results showed that the injection amount of the DME injector drastically increased by 191.9% comparison to that of diesel at $P_{inj}$ = 40 MPa.

  • 1. This study was conducted to examine the effects of change of the short range nozzle hole on the travelling distance. The results of this study are summarized as follows; a) Effect of change of the cap hole diameter on the travelling distance of sprayed particles was generally a linear, the increasing rate was about 0.27. b) When the difference between the sectional area of cap hole and that of grooves of swirl plate, was small the travelling distance was decreased by the decreasing of spraying speed at cap hole. 2. This study was conducted to examine the effects of change of the short range nozzle hole on the size of spraying particles. The results of this study are summarized as follows; a) The diameter of sprayed particles on travelling distances in the short range nozzle did not coincide with the kinetic energy principle derived from the momentum and the resistance. b) The average diameter of sprayed particle between 1m and 3m in which amount of sprayed particle was particularly a great deal, was big, because that some of sprayed particles were absorbed each other on the way to fall c) Effect of increase of cap hole diameter was generally enlarged the average diameter of sprayed particle with small rate.

  • The intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole diesel nozzle with a 2-spring nozzle holder were investigated experimentally. Without changing the total orifice exit area, the hole number of the multi-hole nozzle varied from 3 (d$\_$n/=0.42 mm) to 5 (d$\_$n/=0.32 mm). The time-resolved droplet diameters of the spray including the SMD (Saute. mean diameter) and the AMD (arithmetic mean diameter), injected intormittently from the multi-hole nozzles into still ambient ai., were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyze.). The 5-hole nozzle spray shows the smaller spray cone angle, the decreased SMD distributions and the small difference between the SMD and the AMD, compared with that of the 3-hole nozzle spray. From the SMD distributions with the radial distance, the spray structure can be classified into the three regions : (a) the inner region showing the high SMD distribution , (b) the mixing flow region where the shea. flow structure would be constructed : and (c) the outer region formed through the disintegration processes of the spray inner region and composed of fine droplets. Through the SMD distributions along the spray centerline, it reveals that the SMD decreases rapidly after showing the maximum value in the vicinity of the nozzle tip. The SMD remains the constant value near the Z/d$\_$n/=166 and 156.3 for the 3-hole and 5-hole nozzles, which illustrate that the disintegration processes of the 5-hole nozzle spray proceed more rapidly than that of the 3-hole nozzle spray.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the injection and spray characteristics of single-hole GDI injectors using injection rate and mie-scattering spray images. Five types of single-hole injectors with different nozzle hole diameters were used, and the spray rate, spray tip penetration, spray area, and spray width were analyzed. As a result, the diameter of the nozzle hole had a direct effect on the injection and spray characteristics. It was confirmed that the larger the diameter of the nozzle hole, the higher the injection quantity, the spray tip penetration, the spray area, and the spray width. In addition, it was confirmed that the near-field spray, which has little influence of ambient air, has a great correlation with the injection rate.

  • Injection technology is one of the important technologies in a diesel engine. Many studies have done on the injection system. In this study, the fuel chamber geometry, the orifice ratio and the needle lift of the injection valve for a marine diesel engine are varied, and simulated. The result shows that the nozzle hole size has influence on the rail pressure and injection duration sensitively. The decrease of the static pressure at the nozzle hole entrance and the increase of the dynamic pressure on the outlet surface are occurred with the increase of the nozzle hole diameter. The highest dynamic pressure of the outlet was occurred at the needle lift of 0.4mm and the nozzle hole diameter of 0.328mm in this test nozzle.

  • This paper presents effect of nozzle hole number on atomization characteristic of DME fuel spray using three different type of injector having the hole number of 6, 7 and 8. For this study, PDPA(phase Doppler particle analyzer) experiment was performed in terms of $T_{ASOE}$ under various injection pressure. To compare general trend of atomization characteristic, the law data were ensemble averaged based on $T_{eng}$ of 0.2 ms. Results showed that the droplet diameter in terms of SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) was reduced as increase in injection pressure. Increasing the number of hole lead to reduce in droplet diameter, but no significant reduction in diameter was observed between hole number of 7 and that of 8. In addition, increasing the number of hole resulted in decrease in droplet velocity which is considered as the effect of reduction in spray momentum due to decreasing of fuel quantity per each hole.
