  • In order to understand the currents around Hampyung Bay and Haeje Peninsula, 2D numerical simulations for tidal currents and tide-induced residual currents were carried out. Dominant semidiurnal tidal currents have reversing form and flow NNE-SSW from northern Haeje Peninsula to Songi Island, E-S at northern Haeje Peninsula and NNW-SSE in Hampyung Bay. In flood, a part of currents from Imja Island~Nakwhol Island flow along the main stream flowing northeast at offshore region and the rest flow into Hampyung Bay flowing east along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula. In ebb, currents from Hampyung Bay flow west along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula and run together with the main stream flowing southeast at offshore region. The currents create an anticyclonic circulation in flood and a cyclonic circulation in ebb around Haeje Peninsula including Hampyung Bay. Tidal currents are accumulated on Doripo which located at the entrance of Hampyung Bay and show high current velocities. Tidal currents and tide induced residual currents are weak at the inside of Hampyung Bay which has narrow entrance, shallow water depth and wide intertidal zone. An anticyclonic eddy is formed around Gaksi Island as a result of tide induced residual currents. In northern coast of Haeje Peninsula, slow constant currents flow east. It is expected that a gradual change of sediment and an increase of flushing time for suspended materials are carried by tidal currents occurring in Hampyung Bay.

  • This study aims to evaluate the performance of the Air Quality Model (AQM) for the seasonal and spatial distribution of the $NH_3$ concentration in the atmosphere. To obtain observational data for the model validation, observations based on biweekly sampling have been conducted using passive samplers since April 2015 at multiple monitoring sites in the Tokyo metropolitan area. AQM, built based on WRF/CMAQ, was applied to predict the $NH_3$ concentration observed from April 2015 to March 2016. The simulation domain includes the Kanto region, which is the most densely populated area in Japan. Because the area also contains large amount of livestock, especially in its northern part, the density of the $NH_3$ emissions derived from human activities and agriculture there are estimated to be the highest in Japan. In the model validation, the model overestimated the observed $NH_3$ concentration in the summer season and underestimated it in the winter season. In particular, the overestimation in the summer was remarkable at a rural site (Komae) in Tokyo. It was found that the overestimation at Komae was caused by the transportation of $NH_3$ emitted in the northern part of the Kanto region during the night. It is suggested that the emission input used in this study overestimated the $NH_3$ emission from human sources around the Tokyo suburbs and agricultural sources in the northern part of the Kanto region in the summer season. In addition, the current emission inventories might overestimate the difference of the agricultural $NH_3$ emissions among seasons. Because the overestimation of $NH_3$ in the summer causes an overestimation of $NO_3{^-}$ in $PM_{2.5}$ in the AQM simulation, further investigation is necessary for the seasonal variation in the $NH_3$ emissions.

  • The hat on the back of the upper jacket in Scythian, in of northern region surrounding the Black Sea, is described as a typical woolen hood, but until now has been overlooked in Korean costume studies. The purpose of this study is to analyze the hat on the upper jacket in Scythians and to recognize the meaning of the hat. A further purpose is to complete the basic framework of research concerning the Scythian costume by adding the part that was overlooked previously As for the research method, we collected literature, previous research results, the exhibition catalog, and the related artifacts for analysis. The literature was collected at the German Archaeological Research Institute. The analysis of artifacts was based on data collected by the researchers at the Heremitage Museum in Russia and data was taken by the staff of the Heremitage Museum. The conclusions of this study are as follows: Among the artifacts in the northern region of the Black Sea, it was perviously believed that Scythians status was signified by the wearing of hat-tops. Regardless of age, warriors and knights all wore upper jackets with hats, so it appears that the people who are active wore upper jackets with hats. On the other hand, it was assumed that the royal family, who wore ornamented, colorful, and decorative hats were not observed to have worn upper jackets with hats, and therefore did not require a hat. Therefore, it is considered that the hat in the Scythian society was a costume element emphasizing practicality, not necessarily a class symbol.

  • To improve the oxygen-deficient water mass (ODW), the spatial and temporal variation in the water quality and characteristic of ODW occurrence were analyzed using yearly water quality data from 1989 to 2006 in Jinhae Bay, Korea. In addition, we estimated $ODW_{area},\;ODW_{vol.}$ and $ODW_R$ for Jinhae Bay. The overall water quality improved during the 2000s, based the annual variation in dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, etc. A cluster analysis classified Jinhae Bay into the southwestern, central, northern, and eastern regions. ODW occurred throughout the southwestern region in 1993 and 2002-2004, and the estimated $ODW_{vol.}$ was about $1.92km^3$. ODW did not occur in the eastern region because circulating seawater was exchanged in that part of Jinhae Bay. As ODW was generated every year in the southwestern region, this is the most polluted area in Jinhae Bay. The ODWR decreased in the northern region, showing that the water quality there has improved since a wastewater treatment plant began operating in 1994.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the spatial distribution and change of the frequency of Yellow Sand days and to examine their relationship with atmospheric circular characteristics at the surroundings of the Korean peninsula. Yellow Sand days data are used by intensity, Siberian High Index and monthly mean temperature of the Northern Hemisphere. In the Middle-western region, the occurrence frequency of Yellow Sand days was higher during the study period (1973-2004). Also, the occurrence frequency of Yellow Sand days increased to latter half 16 years compared with the first half 16 years, and be clearer in Middlewest regions. Yellow Sand days frequency increased, and the trend was distinct in the Jungbu region during the study period. Increasing trend of Yellow Sand days frequency was significant for the recent 22 years. Yellow Sand days had a negative relationship with Siberian High Index in February and March. Therefore, Siberian High Index became weaker in the spring, and possibility for the occurrence of Yellow Sand days was generating larger. Yellow Sand days had a positive relationship in monthly mean temperature of the Northern Hemisphere. Especially, the case of the strong Yellow Sand days is significant. Recently, global warming might be affecting the occurrence of strong Yellow Sand days.

  • In Vietnam, the desire to consume organic vegetables is increasing as people become increasingly concerned about foods that contain several chemicals and toxins that are hazardous to their health. However, numerous subjective and objective factors continue to influence customers' purchase intention and behavior, indicating that this market has not yet reached its full potential. The study analyzes the impacts of trust, price, and convenience on consumers' consumption behavior and frequency of using organic vegetables in Northern Vietnam. We surveyed 312 consumers in the region. After classifying the data, 178 participants have used or regularly used organic vegetables selected for further study. Next, the author applied SmartPLS software with version 3.3 to test the hypotheses and analyze the effects of the observations. The result shows that three main factors affect customers' organic vegetable consumption behavior, especially perceived convenience. This study contributes to the development of comprehensive policy mechanisms and regulations on product traceability. Furthermore, market management authorities must have a strategy in place to inspect the product quality of organic vegetable store chains regularly to build customer trust and support the growth of organic vegetable production and supply chains in Vietnam's northern region.

  • The Arctic region remains surrounded by sea ice during most of the period of the year. In the Arctic Ocean the Northern Sea Route (NSR) has been used as an important route for shipping. The arctic sea ice is decreasing since 1979; hence needs to be monitored. In this research work sea ice concentration in the recent years and sea ice concentration anomalies of few months with long term sea ice concentration are studied. The climatology of long term ice concentration data from various satellites, and the recent sea ice concentration data from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) were used. The results show that sea ice concentration and sea ice extent in the Arctic region decreased by around 5% from 2015 to 2016, but in 2017 increased again in smaller amount in some areas like around Novaya Zemlya, and parts of the sea in between Greenland and Longyearbyen, and around Banks Island. The percentages of sea ice area in NSR for July 7 in 2015 to 2017 were 37%, 39% and 33%, respectively, indicating a large area (around ten thousand $km^2$) become ice free in 2017 compared to the previous year.

  • This study analyzed the status of climate-change indicator plants native to the main islands of the Korean peninsula, while elucidating their distribution characteristics. Information on flora from over 129 island locations, comprising more than 100 species of native plants, was collected, compiled into a database, and utilized as raw data. The distribution of 193 climate-change indicator plants was confirmed. The distribution area of broadleaf evergreen trees and ferns, including Mallotus japonicus and Cyrtomium falcatum, was relatively wide. In contrast, the distribution of common northern plants such as Corydalis turtschaninovii and Malus baccata was limited. If global warming persists, northern plant distribution is expected to decrease rapidly in the Korean Peninsula island region, while the northern limit line of the southern plants is expected to migrate further northward. During this process, it is likely that the plant congregation structure and species diversity within the island region will change dynamically. In this study, comparative analyses between species and regions were conducted by assessing the relative frequency of their occurrence, and six types of botanical geographic distribution patterns were noted.
