Estimation of snow depth using optical image is conducted by using correlation with Snow Cover Fraction (SCF). Various algorithms have been proposed for the estimation of snow cover fraction based on Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI). In this study we tested linear, quadratic, and exponential equations for the generation of snow cover fraction maps using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua satellite in order to evaluate their applicability to the complex terrain of South Korea and to search for improvements to the estimation of snow depth on this landscape. The results were validated by comparison with in-situ snowfall data from weather stations, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) calculated as 3.43, 2.37, and 3.99 cm for the linear, quadratic, and exponential approaches, respectively. Although quadratic results showed the best RMSE, this was due to the limitations of the data used in the study; there are few number of in-situ data recorded on the station at the time of image acquisition and even the data is mostly recorded on low snowfall. So, we conclude that linear-based algorithms are better suited for use in South Korea. However, in the case of using the linear equation, the SCF with a negative value can be calculated, so it should be corrected. Since the coefficients of the equation are not optimized for this area, further regression analysis is needed. In addition, if more variables such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land cover, etc. are considered, it could be possible that estimation of national-scale snow depth with higher accuracy.

Remote sensing cannot provide a direct measurement of vegetation index (VI) but it can provide a reasonably good estimate of vegetation index, defined as the ratio of satellite bands. The monitoring of vegetation in nearby urban regions is made difficult by the low spatial resolution and temporal resolution image captures. In this study, enhancing spatial resolution method is adapted as to improve a low spatial resolution. Recent studies have successfully estimated normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) using improved resolution method such as from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard EOS Terra satellite. Image enhancing spatial resolution is an important tool in remote sensing, as many Earth observation satellites provide both high-resolution and low-resolution multi-spectral images. Examples of enhancement of a MODIS multi-spectral image and a MODIS NDVI image of Cheongju using a Landsat TM high-resolution multi-spectral image are presented. The results are compared with that of the IHS technique is presented for enhancing spatial resolution of multi-spectral bands using a higher resolution data set. To provide a continuous monitoring capability for NDVI, in situ measurements of NDVI from paddy field was carried out in 2004 for comparison with remotely sensed MODIS data. We compare and discuss NDVI estimates from MODIS sensors and in-situ spectroradiometer data over Ochang plain region. These results indicate that the MODIS NDVI is underestimated by approximately 50%.

Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important component of hydrological processes. Accurate estimates of ET variation are of vital importance for natural hazard adaptation and water resource management. This study first developed a soil water index (SWI)-based Priestley-Taylor algorithm (SWI-PT) based on the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), SWI, net radiation, and temperature. The algorithm was then compared with a modified satellite-based Priestley-Taylor ET model (MS-PT). After examining the performance of the two models at 10 flux tower sites in different land cover types over East Asia and Australia, the daily estimates from the SWI-PT model were closer to observations than those of the MS-PT model in each land cover type. The average correlation coefficient of the SWI-PT model was 0.81, compared with 0.66 in the original MS-PT model. The average value of the root mean square error decreased from $36.46W/m^2$ to $23.37W/m^2$ in the SWI-PT model, which used different variables of soil moisture and vegetation indices to capture soil evaporation and vegetative transpiration, respectively. By using the EVI and SWI, uncertainties involved in optimizing vegetation and water constraints were reduced. The estimated ET from the MS-PT model was most sensitive (to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in forests) to net radiation ($R_n$) in grassland and cropland. The estimated ET from the SWI-PT model was most sensitive to $R_n$, followed by SWI, air temperature ($T_a$), and the EVI in each land cover type. Overall, the results showed that the MS-PT model estimates of ET in forest and cropland were weak. By replacing the fraction of soil moisture ($f_{sm}$) with the SWI and the NDVI with the EVI, the newly developed SWI-PT model captured soil evaporation and vegetation transpiration more accurately than the MS-PT model.

Continuous monitoring of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) vegetation indices is important to apply remote sensing technology for the estimation of crop growth. In this study, we evaluated the performance of eight vegetation indices derived from soybean RGB images with various agronomic parameters under drought stress condition. Drought stress influenced the behavior of various RGB vegetation indices related soybean canopy architecture and leaf color. In particular, reported vegetation indices such as ExGR (Excessive green index minus excess red index), Ipca (Principal Component Analysis Index), NGRDI (Normalized Green Red Difference Index), VARI (Visible Atmospherically Resistance Index), SAVI (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) were effective tools in obtaining canopy coverage and leaf chlorophyll content in soybean field. In addition, the RGB vegetation indices related to leaf color responded more sensitively to drought stress than those related to canopy coverage. The PLS-DA (Partial Squares-Discriminant Analysis) results showed that the separation of RGB vegetation indices was distinct by drought stress. The results, yet preliminary, display the potential of applying vegetation indices based on RGB images as a tool for monitoring crop environmental stress.
Many agricultural reservoirs in South Korea, constructed before 1970, have become aging facilities. The majority of small-scale reservoirs lack measurement systems to ascertain basic specifications and water levels, classifying them as unmeasured reservoirs. Furthermore, continuous sedimentation within the reservoirs and industrial development-induced water quality deterioration lead to reduced water supply capacity and changes in reservoir morphology. This study utilized Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensors, which provide elevation information and allow for the characterization of surface features, to construct high-resolution Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data of reservoir facilities. Additionally, bathymetric measurements based on multibeam echosounders were conducted to propose an updated approach for determining reservoir capacity. Drone-based LiDAR was employed to generate DSM and DEM data with a spatial resolution of 50 cm, enabling the display of elevations of hydraulic structures, such as embankments, spillways, and intake channels. Furthermore, using drone-based hyperspectral imagery, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) were calculated to detect water bodies and verify differences from existing reservoir boundaries. The constructed high-resolution DEM data were integrated with bathymetric measurements to create underwater contour maps, which were used to generate a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN). The TIN was utilized to calculate the inundation area and volume of the reservoir, yielding results highly consistent with basic specifications. Considering areas that were not surveyed due to underwater vegetation, it is anticipated that this data will be valuable for future updates of reservoir capacity information.
In this study, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to mapping air temperature in Seoul. MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiomter (MODIS) data was used as auxiliary data for mapping. For the ANN network topology optimizing, scatterplots and statistical analysis were conducted, and input-data was classified and combined that highly correlated data which surface temperature, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), time (satellite observation time, Day of year), location (latitude, hardness), and data quality (cloudness). When machine learning was conducted only with data with a high correlation with air temperature, the average values of correlation coefficient (r) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were 0.967 and 2.708℃. In addition, the performance improved as other data were added, and when all data were utilized the average values of r and RMSE were 0.9840 and 1.883℃, which showed the best performance. In the Seoul air temperature map by the ANN model, the air temperature was appropriately calculated for each pixels topographic characteristics, and it will be possible to analyze the air temperature distribution in city-level and national-level by expanding research areas and diversifying satellite data.
Drought is an natural phenomenon which effects greatly on our society. It has various time scale and it is difficult to define the beginning and the end. So we can't aware it quickly and the damage of drought become severe. To cope with these problems, it needs to construct drought monitoring system. And it is required that the definition of drought which is objective and can be applied widely and proper drought index for drought monitoring. Meteorology and hydrology have developed drought index for drought monitoring. There are many attempt to interpret the drought using NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) or LST(Land Surface Temperature) in remote sensing. In this study, drought index and precipitation is used to find drought severity of last ten years in South Korea. NDVI and VCI is applied to perceive the state of drought. Finally, the possibility of drought monitoring and evaluating drought depth is estimated by analyzing the correlation between vegetation Index and drought index.
Compared to the imagery produced by traditional satellites, PlanetScope satellite imagery has made it possible to easily capture remotely-sensed imagery every day through dozens or even hundreds of satellites on a relatively small budget. This study aimed to detect changed areas and update a land cover map using a PlanetScope image. To generate a classification map, pixel-based Random Forest (RF) classification was performed by using additional features, such as the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The classification result was converted to vector data and compared with the existing land cover map to estimate the changed area. To estimate the accuracy and trends of the changed area, the quantitative quality of the supervised classification result using the PlanetScope image was evaluated first. In addition, the patterns of the changed area that corresponded to the classification result were analyzed using the PlanetScope satellite image. Experimental results found that the PlanetScope image can be used to effectively to detect changed areas on large-scale land cover maps, and supervised classification results can update the changed areas.
The frequency of exposure of field crops to stress situations is increasing due to abnormal weather conditions. In South Korea, large-scale diseases in representative paddy rice cultivation area were happened. There are limits to field investigation on the crop damage due to large-scale. Satellite-based remote sensing techniques are useful for monitoring crops in cities and counties, but the sensitivity of vegetation index measured from satellite under abnormal growth of crop should be evaluated. The goal is to evaluate satellite-based normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) retrieved from different spatial scales using drone imagery. In this study, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 satellites were used and they have spatial resolution of 10 and 30 m. Drone-based NDVI, which was resampled to the scale of satellite data, had correlation of 0.867-0.940 with Sentinel-2 NDVI and of 0.813-0.934 with Landsat-8 NDVI. When the effects of bias were minimized, Sentinel-2 NDVI had a normalized root mean square error of 0.2 to 2.8% less than that of the drone NDVI compared to Landsat-8 NDVI. In addition, Sentinel-2 NDVI had the constant error values regardless of diseases damage. On the other hand, Landsat-8 NDVI had different error values depending on degree of diseases. Considering the large error at the boundary of agricultural field, high spatial resolution data is more effective in monitoring crops.
