  • A study was conducted to investigate the anthropometric indices, fat distribution, eating habits and levels of daily physical activity based on the body mass index (BMI ; kg/㎡) of 180 female college students. This stady was based on survey 2001 using a questionnaire. The results are as follow ; The mean age, height, weight and BMI were 20.41 ${\pm}$ 1.82 years, 161.86 ${\pm}$ 4.51cm, 53.49 ${\pm}$ 7.02kg, and 20.43 ${\pm}$ 2.65kg/㎡, respectively. The group with BMI of under 20 (the lean group) comprised 48.9% : the group with BMI of 20 to 25 (the normal group) comprised 44.4% and the group with BMI of over 25 (the obese group) comprised 6.7% of the subjects. Even though the lean and the normal groups were determined according to BMI. 12.5% of the lean group and 31.3% of the normal group had more than 25% body fat. Of the students, 11.5% of the lean group, 25.0% of the normal group and 58.3% of the obese group had of more than 0.8 waist/Hip Ratio (WHR). The medical problems suffered by the subjects were constipation (24.4%), gastroenteritis (20.6%), anemia(15.0%) and edema(13.3%), which was a result of their eating habits. Out of all the subjects, 27.2% ingested their meals irregularly, 74.4% skipped breakfast, and 92.4% of the lean group, 89.2% of the normal group and 81.8% of the obese group ingested snacks on a daily basis. Their favorite types of snacks were cookies breads and cakes (33.7%), spicy sliced rice cakes pork sausage and boiled fish cakes (18.5%), fruits (15.2%), juices and sodas (13.5%) and hamburgers and pizzas (3.9%). Their consumption of high calorie and processed foods was high, Of the subjects, 38.9% ate out daily. 45.1% had tried weight loss. Those with large upper bodies comprised 11.5%, large intermediate bodies 18.5% and large lower bodies 69.0%. Most of the students were dissatisfied with their body snaps. Of the subjects, 95.1% exercised irregularly. Daily physical activity tended to increase significantly with an increase in BMI : the lean group's average energy consumption was 1509.40㎉ the normal group's was 1792.21㎉ and the obese group's was 2334.63㎉, which were below the recommended value. This study suggests that the maintenance of an ideal weight, the improvement of eating habits and adequate exercise are needed for female college students to improve their health and nutritional status. • By using the artificial lightweight aggregate for the natural aggregate depletes and destruction of environment and the application of lightweight concrete in structure, the lightweight concrete is manufactured. The fundamental characteristics by the waterbinder ratio was evaluated. It is suggested the method to control of pre-absorbed water of the lightweight aggregate. Lightweight concrete with pre-absorbed aggregate has similar characteristics compared to normal weight concrete regardless of water-binder ratio. According to the water-binder ratio, the drying condition, and the rebar, the unit mass of the lightweight concrete showed the reduction of 14.6${\sim}$21.0% as the range of 1,668${\sim}$1,998 $kg/m^3$ in comparison to the normal weight concrete. The lightweight aggregate pre-absorbed water showed the deferent evaporation quantity according to the water-binder ratio. As the water-binder ratio is lower, the oven dry vapour water is larger, therefore the internal curing water is increasing. In the same water-binder, comparing the normal concrete the lightweight concrete shows lower compressive strength which is due to the different strength of an aggregate. In the air dry curing, the normal weight concrete has a lower strength improvement effect in w/c 0.3 than the ratio 0.4 and 0.5. However, the strength improvement effect has increasing as the water-binder ratio was low in the light concrete.

  • Mutant mouse which show dwarfism has been developed by N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) mutagenesis using BALB/c mice. The mutant mouse was inherited as autosomal recessive trait and named Small Body Size (SBS) mouse. The phenotype of SBS mouse was not apparent at birth, but it was possible to distinguish mutant phenotype from normal mice 1 week after birth. In this study, we examined body weight changes and bone mineral density (BMD), and we also carried out genetic linkage analysis to map the causative gene(s) of SBS mouse. Body weight changes were observed from birth to 14 weeks of age in both affected (n = 30) and normal mice (n = 24). BMD was examined in each five SBS and normal mice between 3 and 6 weeks of age, respectively. For the linkage analysis, we produced backcross progeny [(SBS${\times}$C57BL/6J) $F_1{\times}$ SBS] $N_2$ mice (n = 142), and seventy-four microsatellite markers were used for primary linkage analysis. Body weight of affected mice was consistently lower than that of the normal mice, and was 43.7% less than that of normal mice at 3 weeks of age (P < 0.001). As compared with normal mice at 3 and 6 weeks of age, BMD of the SBS mice was significantly low. The results showed 15.5% and 14.1 % lower in total body BMD, 15.3% and 8.7% lower in forearm BMD, and 29.7% and 20.1% lower in femur BMD, respectively. The causative gene was mapped on chromosome 10. The map order and the distance between markers were D10Mit248 - 2.1 cM - D10Mit51 - 4.2 cM - sbs - 0.7 cM - D10Mit283 - 1.4cM - D10Mit106 - 11.2cM - D10Mit170.

  • Purpose of this study was to investigate correlation between blood pressure(systolic and diastolic) and dietary Na, K intake pattern in the family members of normal and hypertension disease patients, besides patients themselves. Mean values of $systolic(126.6\pm18.0$ vs $119.3\pm17.2mmHg)$ and diastolic $(77.6\pm14.6$ vs $71.6\pm12.5mmHg)$ blood pressure in the family members of hypertension patients were significantly higher than those of normal subjects. Systolic blood pressure in normal subject group was positively correlated with age, body weight, sodium in soybean paste, and was negatively correlated with potassium in hotpepper paste, soybean paste and meats. Systolic blood pressure in the family member of hypertension patient was positively correlated with age, body weight, sodium in soybean Paste, and table salt intake, but urinary potassium excretion was negatively correlated. Diastolic blood pressure was positively correlated with age, body weight, and table salt intake, and was negatively correlated with potassium in hotpepper paste and soybean paste in normal subjects groups. In the family members of hypertension patients group, diastolic blood pressure was positively correlated with age, body weight, and table salt intake, and was negatively correlated with sodium in hotpepper Paste and soybean paste and urinary potassium excretion. In total, tendency of negative correlation between Na intake pattern and systolic blood pressure in normal subjects was much obvious than that in the family members of hypertension patients. Urinary potassium excretion in the family members of hypertension patients was also negatively correlated with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

  • This review has been done to examine sex-linked dwarf gene in broiler production in hot-humid climates. Introduction of sex-linked dwarf gene especially in hot harsh tropical environments brings a great advantage for broiler production. The heavy broiler parent suffers due to the stress of these adverse climates. Sex-linked dwarf genes reduce body weight, egg weight, but are superior for adaptability under harsh tropical environments, with a lower requirement for housing and feed, better survivability and reproductive fitness giving fewer defective eggs, more hatching eggs, better fertility, hatchability, feed conversion efficiency and resistance to disease. Overall the cost of chick production from dwarf hens is lower than from their normal siblings. Market weights of broilers from sexlinked dwarf dams is almost similar to those of broilers from normal dams with normal sires. But the net benefit of broiler production from sex-linked dwarf dams is found to be greater than that of broilers from normal dams. This will be the most important to the rural communities in Bangladesh and in other countries where the similar environment and socio-economic conditions exist. Therefore, sexlinked dwarf hens might be used in broiler breeding plan as well as broiler production in the tropics.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the recognition of real somatotype and body of college women. The study was carried out by classifying somatotypes into three categories based on the body index; slim, normal, and obese somatotype. The subject of this study was 106 college women, and real measurement and survey were used. Data was analyzed by SPSS 12.0 and cross tabulation analysis, t-test, Anova, and correlation analysis were operated. The result is as follows. 1. The height of the subjects was 163.5cm, weight was 53.3kg, Rohrer index was 1.2, BMI was 19.9, Vervaeck index was 84.4 and the classification based on the body index belonged to the normal group. 2. The characteristics of groups divided by the body index are that slimmer groups is longer in length factor and smaller in the factors related with volume than other groups. The characteristics of groups classified by self-consciousness shows significant difference in all girth factors, back intersyce breadth, front intersyce breadth, neck to nipple length, and nipple to nipple breadth. 3. Conscious about the somatotype with using body index generally shows similarity. In the length factor including height, slim somatotype group is perceived as longer than normal somatotype group, and in the girth factor including weight, normal somatotype group is recognized as bigger and thicker than others.

  • Cleft lip and palate is the most common malformation in the craniofacial region. The patients with cleft lip and palate have functional problem such as, speech, feeding and respiratory as well as esthetic problem. So, treatment should be done by multidiciplinary team approach. The role of pediatric dentist in the team is advicement for feeding method, guidance of normal growth, caries control and preventive orthodontics. In cleft lip and palate patients, maxillary arch after cheiloplasty is usually collapsed by excessive tension of the scar. This collapse increase the difficulty of later orthodontic treatment. Therefore, the maxillary arch segments should be moved and retaind to normal position as soon as cheiloplasty is done to reduce the need and difficulty of orthodontic treatment. This concept is called by the early orthopedic treatment in cleft lip and palate. Also, this orthopedic appliance works as feeding applince to normal feeding and weight gain We reported two cases of early orthopedic treatment with favorable result in complete bilateral cleft lip and palate patients after cheiloplasty. Patients showed normal weight and their maxillary arch widths were increased.

  • Effects of addition of a mycotoxin detoxifier in poultry feed were studied in broilers. Aflatoxins were present in the poultry feed as 28 ppb (normal feed), 78 ppb (contaminated feed) and 170 ppb (highly contaminated feed). The mycotoxin detoxifier was used in 3 concentrations i.e. 1, 3 and 5 kg/ton of feed. Aflatoxins reduced the body weight in broiler chicken and treatment of contaminated feed with low level of detoxifier improved the body weight equivalent to that of normal feed. Higher level of detoxifier proved better than lower level addition in alleviating the effects of highly contaminated feed. Addition of detoxifier also resulted in improvement of FCR to the level of normal feed. Antibody levels against Newcastle disease virus on day 28 of age were significantly lower in chicken fed on contaminated feed. Addition of detoxifier in feed improved the antibody levels in chicken. Mortality was highest in groups given contaminated feed throughout the study period of 7 weeks. Significant mortality was also observed in groups given highly contaminated feed for 2 weeks. Mortality in chicken given detoxifier added contaminated feed was lowest and similar to the group given normal feed. The study shows that mycotoxin detoxifier containing oxyquinol, dichloro-thymol and micronized yeast can effectively neutralize the ill-effects of aflatoxins in poultry feed.

  • The widespread pursuit for the thin physique may have detrimental impact on the wellbeing of the young generation, especially females. This study aimed to determine the effect of wanting very low body weight on dietary habits and psychological factors of female adolescents. Participants were 619 girls from 5 high schools in Kyeonggi, Korea. Information on dietary behaviors, psychological factors as well as current heights and weights and the desired weight for current height were obtained by questionnaire. Of total subjects, 38.1%, 35.5%, and 26.5% desired weights corresponding to normal (10~85 percentile), low (3~10 percentile) and very low BMI (< 3 percentile), respectively. The subjects who wanted to be very low weight had the average BMI of 18.57 kg/m2, which was significantly lower than $21.21kg/m^2$ of those who wanted to be normal weight (p < 0.001). The subjects who desired very low weight had significantly higher scores for depression symptoms (p < 0.05), while there were no differences in obsession to lose weight and obesity stress. Moreover, more subjects in this group had undesirable dietary habits such as eating fast foods more than weekly (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the desire for extreme thinness may lead female adolescents to have not only unreasonably similar obesity stress and obsession to lose weight but also higher depression symptoms, along with undesirable dietary habits. The findings suggest the potential harm from excessive weight concerns of female adolescents; thus efforts to teach this group about healthy weights are urgently needed.

  • In the present study, we investigated the effect of pretreatment of p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), inhibitor of serotonin synthesis, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. First of all, effects of PCPA injection on food intake and body weight in rats were investigated. During 4 days of PCPA injection (300 mg/kg BW once a day), food intake was decreased by 33% and daily gain in body weight was inhibited compared with controls. Twenty-four hours after last PCPA injection, food intake and gain in body weight returned toward almost normal. Pair-feeding to PCPA (PCPAP) injection revealed that body weight of rats in PCPA group was not different from rats in PCPAP groups. To quantify the effects of LPS on food intake and body weight, we administered varying doses $(10,\;100,\;500\;{\mu}g/kg\;BW)$ of LPS to rats. LPS induced a reduction of food intake and weight loss in a dose dependent manner compared with controls. To evaluate the effects of PCPA pretreatment on LPS injection, rats were treated with PCPA for 4 days (300 mg/kg BW once a day), which was followed by LPS injection for 2 days $(500\;{\mu}g/kg\;BW\;once\;a\;day)$ (PCPA+LPS group), while rats in LPS group had injections with normal saline instead of PCPA for 4 days, which was followed by LPS administration. Rats in control group received 0.9% NaCl for 6 days. LPS decreased food intake by 80% and inhibited gain in body weight, while PCPA pretreated rats showed normalized food intake and gain in weight during the days of LPS injections compared with controls. In conclusion, pretreatment of PCPA prevented LPS-induced anorexia.
