The recent type of dysfunctional family is caused not only by the loss of a family member, which is the traditional type of dysfunction, but also by the absence of a functional aspect. In order for a family to function healthily, it is necessary to have the right child rearing by the parents and the right parental role. Accordingly, this study is to identify the difference in stress from child rearing and the parental role in dysfunctional families, which have been increasing enormously in recent times. With this aim, 45 persons from dysfunctional families owing to divorce, 51 persons from other dysfunctional families, and 48 persons from general families were subject to a test about stress from child rearing and the parental role. As a result, for stress from child rearing, mothers in dysfunctional families perceived stress from child rearing more highly than ones in general families; and also for parental role, the level of parental role was proven lower for mothers in dysfunctional families than ones in general families.
Statement of problem: The endodontically treated tooth is generally restored with post and core, owing to the brittle and the loss of large amount of tooth structure. As periodontal treatment was developed, there are many cases that periodontally involved teeth used in prosthetic treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution in the dentin and post structures by the various post materials and the amount of remaining alveolar bone height. Material and method: The 3-dimensional finite element models of mandible 1st premolars were divided into six types according to the various amount of remaining alveolar bone and post type. All types were modeled using equal length, diameter and shape of the post. Three types of post and core materials were used: prefabricated titaniumpost and amalgam core, prefabricated stainless steel post and amalgam core, and cast gold post and core. 300 Newton force was applied to functional cusp of mandible 1st premolar. Results: The results were as follows: First, there was no apparent difference in the pattern of stress distribution according to the alveolar bone condition concentrate on the post middle area. Second, there was difference in pattern of stress distribution according to the core materials, gold post and core generated same than amalgam core. Third, there was no apparent difference in the pattern of stress distribution within the dentin according to the post and core materials. But a cast gold post and core generated the lowest maximum stress value, a stainless steel post generated the highest maximum stress value. Fourth, in the reduced alveolar bone model, maximum stress value is 1.5 times than that of the normal alveolar bone model. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, to provide minimal stress to the root with alveolar bone reduced, the post length may be as long as apical seal was not destroyed. To prevent fracture of tooth, it is rational to use gold alloy which material was good for stress distribution for post materials.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related on pain in female office workers. Methods : Neck pain group of 31 female subjects complained of neck and arm discomfort. Normal group of 20 female subjects had no complaints or minimal discomfort. Cervical curvature and muscle tone were assessed by whole spine x-ray, meridian-electromyography(MEMG), craniovertebral angle, and Moire. Neck pain was evaluated by Neck Disability Index(NDI) and Visual Analog Scale(VAS). The emotional and other physical factors that could effect neck pain were checked by questionnaires including Beck Depression Index(BDI), Stress Reaction Index(SRI), Holmes & Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale(SRRS), International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ), and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale(GSRS). Results : The contraction and fatigue of upper trapezius by MEMG was significantly higher in the neck pain group. And BDI, SRI, SRRS, and GSRS were significantly higher in the neck pain group (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the Jackson's angle, Cobb's method, craniovertebral angle, and moire between two groups. Conclusions : The results suggest that neck pain is related to mental stress rather than physical stress and physical stress does not change cervical curvature significantly.
South Korea will soon be a super-aged society, as more than 20.6% of its population will be 65 years and older by 2025. As of 2022, 17.5% of the total population in South Korea is 65 years and older, which exceeds the set threshold for an aged society, where more than 14% of the population is 65 years and older. The proportion of older subway construction workers has increased. Aging workers and their work stress negatively impact their workability. A previous study demonstrated that the stress index measured using the uBioMacpa measurement device (Macpa stress index) had a significant correlation with work stress in South Korea. The device tests vascular health and measures stress levels via Macpa signal analysis. In this study, the pulse waves of subway construction workers were measured using uBioMacpa to identify their stress levels. The stress levels were analyzed by age, years of service, job position, employment type, and work type. Herein, these statistics could not be easily represented by a normal distribution; therefore, the Kruskal-Wallis test, a nonparametric statistical method, was used for the analysis of data. The results showed that age, job position, employment type, and working type affected the Macpa stress index and the stress levels of workers increased with age. In terms of job position, technical engineers were more stressed than other workers because of their poor working environment. In terms of employment type, daily-wage workers were more stressed than other workers. In terms of working type, tunneling, waterproofing, and construction scored the highest Macpa stress indexes without any significant difference, whereas earthworks scored the lowest. Based on the analysis of Macpa stress index, safety and health management plans were proposed to reduce the stress levels of workers. Moreover, a manual for efficient stress management must be developed for subway construction workers.
This study was under taken to investigate the influences of predictable or unpredictable stress upon gastric ulceration, and the hippocampectomy upon the ulceration order the stressful conditions. Sixty male albino rats(Sprague-Dawley strain) were divided equally into 3 groups: One was the hippocampal group(N=20) which received hippocampal ablation by suction, another was the cortical control group(N =20) which received partial cortical ablation over the hippocampus, and a third was the normal control group(N=20). Each group was further divided into two subgroups: One was the predicted subgroup(N=10) in which animals could predict the imminent stressful stimuli by hearing a sound(1,000 Hz, 2 sec in duration) 3 sec before the onset of the stress, and the other was the unpredicted subgroup(N=10). After starvation for 24 hours, but water ad libitum, each rat received the electric stimulation(3 mA, 60 Hz, 2 sec in duration, and once per minute in average) for 6 hours via a pair of electrodes attached on the tale. The electric stimulation served as the stress causing the gastric ulcer. Five hours after completion of stimulation, the stomach filled with the physiological saline was removed under deep anesthesia and spread out on a small glass plate. The numbers of the ulcer in each stomach were counted and the shape was examined under the dissecting microscope. Results obtained were as follows: 1. The mean numbers of the ulcer of the predicted subgroups were significantly larger than those of the unpredicted subgroups in the normal control and the cortical control groups, but there was no difference between the values of the two subgroups in the hippocampal group. 2. The mean numbers of the ulcer of the predicted subgroups in the normal control and the cortical control groups were larger(but not significant) than that in the hippocampal group. It is inferred from the above results that the prediction of the stress strengthens the effect of the stress on the gastric ulceration, and the hippocampus facilitates the effect of the prediction of the stress.
Strain-softening model is developed to characterize the interface behavior of geomembrane with geotextile and geosynthetic clay liner(GCL). The model proposed in this research is calibrated by using data from direct shear tests conducted on smooth and textured geomembrane. The research is divided into two regions, pre-peak and post-peak, to take into account of strain-softening effect. Although slight difference between measured and back calculated data is observed under high normal stress, good agreements, in general, are found from back calculations. Especially, good consistency is observed in the case of low normal stress. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the proposed model can be a reasonable constitutive law to figure out the behavior of strain-softening between interfaces of geomembrane. In addition, DSC(Disturbed State Concept) model is also presented for further application in geosynthetic interfaces.
Development of shoot and root, leaf water potential and photosynthetic rate affected by water stress in early growing stage of tobacco were surveyed to interpret stress response in terms of plant physiological and agricultural aspects. The growth of shoot and root was highly suppressed by water stress and the difference in dry weight by rewatering was smaller in root than in shoot. The total root length was highly decreased by water stress and the lengths of root for water stress and non-stress were 74m and 84m, respectively, after rewatering. The root growth treated by water stress was increased between 2nd and 3rd day after treatment indicating that temporary water stress at early growing stage might have increased of root zone activity for early growth stage. The leaf water potentials were decreased to -7.63MPa, -9.47MPa, -11.89MPa, -13MPa at the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th day by water stress. The relative water contents were 75%, 62% and 57% at the 3rd, 4th and 5th day after treatment. Photosynthesis was reduced largely by water stress. The photosynthetic rate after treatment at 2nd day and 3rd day was dropped to 18.15$\mu$mol. $CO_2$/$m^2$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ and 9.35$\mu$mol. $CO_2$/$m^2$ㆍsec$^{-1}$. It was never recovered to the normal, even after rewatering. Stomatal conductance had been reduced since 2nd day after treatment and increased after rewatering.

Introduction: Oxidative stress (OS) during uncontrolled hyperglycemia has a pivotal role in pancreatic dysfunction. Our study aimed to demonstrate that crocin can potentiate anti-oxidant defense systems of pancreatic cells to improve oxidative stress. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided randomly into four groups: a normal group, a normal-treated group, a diabetic group and a diabetic-treated group (n = 6 rats per group). Diabetes was induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (45 mg/kg/IV). The treated groups received crocin daily for 8 weeks (40 mg/kg/IP). At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed and pancreas tissue was obtained. Subsequently, the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitrate and glutathione as well as the enzymatic activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in all animals. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA with appropriate post hoc testing and a probability value of P < 0.05 was considered to represent a statistically significant difference in mean values. Results: Uncontrolled hyperglycemia weakened the anti-oxidant system by decreasing SOD and catalase enzyme activity in pancreatic tissues and induced OS by increasing the MDA content in diabetic non-treated animals. Crocin potentiated the anti-oxidant defense system by increasing the activity of both SOD and catalase, and improved OS by diminishing MDA production in pancreatic cells of rats contained in the diabetic-treated group. Conclusion: Based on our results, it is concluded that uncontrolled hyperglycemia can weaken the anti-oxidant defense system and cause the development of OS. Also, crocin can improve OS in pancreatic cells by potentiating the anti-oxidant defense system.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of exercise therapy on serum lipid levels and antioxidants of obese and normal college female students. The subject group composed of ten normal-weight students(below 30% body fat ratio) and ten obese students(above 30% body fat ratio). After a pilot test, the subjects were given an eight-weeks exercise program. Before and after the exercise program, the subjects were given test for serum lipid and antioxidants were analyzed. The SAS program was used in the data analysis. The statistical measurements employed here were T-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and Wilcoxon rank sum test. The results of this research are as follows. 1) The effects of exercise therapy on serum lipid levels : Before the exercise therapy, the levels of Total-cholesterol, Triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol of the obese group were highier than those of the normal-weight group. However, the HDL-cholesterol levels were highier in the normal-weight group than in the obese group, but these differences were not significant. With the exercise therapy, the levels of Total-cholesterol increased gradually. The HDL-cholesterol increased gradually, the LDL-cholesterol level decreased in both groups, However, the Triglyceride level decreased in the obese group and increased in normal group, but the difference was not significant. 2) The effects of the exercise therapy on serum antioxidants ; Before exercise therapy, the serum FR and GSSG levels of the obese group were significantly highier than those of the normal-weight group(p=0.00, p=0.04). The serum GSH level of the normal-weight group was highier than that of the obese group, and the serum MDA level of the obese group was highier than that of the normal-weight group. Again these differences were not significant. With exercise therapy, serum FR level was reduced and serum GSSG level significantly increased in both group(obese group p=0.01, normal-weight group p=0.01), The serum GSH level of the obese group significantly increased (p=0.01), and serum MDA level significantly increased in the obese group(p=0.01), but the difference in the normal-weight group was not significant. These results show that regular exercise therapy reduces serum FR levels and activation of antioxidant systems, and suppress oxidative stress. These effects were slightly highier in the obese group than in the normal-weight group. The regular exercise therapy decreased the serum Triglyceride levels more in the obese group than in the normal-weight group. However the improvement of the serum lipid profile may require a longer exercise period than eight weeks. The results show that the exercise therapy was overall more effective in the obese group than the normal-weight group.
There are many people who suffer from simulation sickness when immersing in virtual reality. In this study, we analyzed two photoplethysmogram(PPG) parameters - a second derivative parameter and power spectral density ratios - in order to relate PPG parameters with simulation sickness. 36 young, healthy subjects were participated in the experiment, and each subject was equipped with a PPG electrode during his or her immersion. Simulation sickness section was defined as a 7 - second section which starts from the point where a subject reported simulation sickness, and normal section as a same-length section where no physical stimuli was presented to him or her. We compared the PPG parameters of the simulation sickness sections with the normal sections, - d/a ratio is believed to have lower value during vasodilation and higher value during vasoconstriction, however, we could not find much difference in the parameter between normal and simulation sickness sections. We also compared 1 to 10Hz power spectral density ratios in normal sections with in simulation sickness section, and found that 6 density ratios among them have different value. Therefore, the density ratios might be utilized as parameters to detect simulation sickness of subjects.
