Purpose: This study determined and compared the distances from the maxillary root apices of posterior teeth to the floor of the maxillary sinus, or maxillary sinus distances(MSDs), and the distances from the mandibular root apices of the posterior teeth to the mandibular canal, or mandibular canal distances(MCDs), in Thai subjects with skeletal open bite and skeletal normal bite. Materials and Methods: Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained from 30 Thai orthodontic patients (15 patients with skeletal normal bite and 15 with skeletal open bite) whose ages ranged from 14 to 28 years. The CBCT images of the patients were processed and measured using the Romexis Viewer program. The MSDs and MCDs from the root apices of the maxillary and mandibular second premolar, first molar, and second molar to the maxillary sinus floor or the mandibular canal were measured perpendicularly to the occlusal plane. The Student t test was used for comparisons between the 2 groups. Results: The greatest mean MSDs were from the root apex of the second premolars in both groups, whereas the least mean MSDs were from the mesiobuccal root apex of the second molars. The greatest mean MCDs were from the mesial root apex of the first molars, whereas the least mean MCDs were from the distal root apex of the second molars. Conclusion: There were no differences in the mean MSDs or the mean MCDs between the skeletal normal bite group and the skeletal open bite group.

Root surfaces affected by periodontal disease undergo various forms of changes. Cementum exposure from gingival recession may result in absorption of calcium, phosphorus, and fluoride and subsequent hypermineralization and increased radiodensity. Although some reports have suggested that inorganic content with root cementum might show various changes depending upon age or extent of periodontal disease, but no consensus can be reached regarding the the distribution of various elements. The present study examines the difference in mineral content between healthy and periodontal diseased roots by analyzing three areas per tooth along the root surface in cervico-apical direction using electron probe and scanning electron microscope. Healthy tooth that was extracted for orthodontic purpose was used as control. Experimental teeth include those with periodontal pocket depth exceeding 6mm and those with gingival recession and periodontal pocket depth of 2-4mm. Levels of Ca, P, Mg and Na were measured using wavelength dispersive x-ray spectrometer at three areas per tooth. The examined areas were located apical to cemento-enamel junction in control and periodontal ligament-depleted areas in experimental teeth. The corresponding areas were also examined with scanning electron microscope(x70) The results are as follows. 1. Minerals were detected in order of Ca, P, Mg and Na. In all root surfaces, levels of Ca and P were higher in dentin than in cementum. 2. Level of Mg was twice as high in dentin than in cementum. There was no significant difference in the level of Mg and Na between normal and periodontal diseased roots or between the various locations in the same root. 3. Level of Ca and P in the surface cementum showed no difference between normal and periodontal diseased root, although the areas in dentin with high level of either ion also showed high level of corresponding ion in cementum. 4. Difference in the Ca and P content between various locations within the same root was noted, although no coherent pattern existed. These results suggest that although the mineral content of the root cementum in periodontitis-affected tooth is affected by exogenous ions from saliva and food, but there was no difference in the mineral contents between normal and periodontally diseased root.

Purpose : We want to identify the appearance of the buccolingual root dilaceration teeth in the panoramic views and specify the characteristics of these teeth. Materials and Methods : One thousand-six patients were examined on the basis of both panoramic and CT image criteria. We diagnosed and excluded certain teeth from the samples; both prosthodontic or pathologic lesion appearing teeth and mesiodistally dilacerated ones. We meticulously discerned buccolingually dilacerated teeth in the CT images and total 48 samples were selected. The degree of severity in dilaceration was standardized by 2 types of criteria. The samples were differentiated into 3 groups and again categorized into six types showing from the panoramic views: irregular view on the root apex area, clear blunt on the root tip, stepping on root tip, double lamina dura or double tip, arrow-target shaped root, bull's eye, normal view. Results : The types of teeth selected from total 48 buccolingual root dilaceration samples were mandibular first and second molar, premolars, canines, and lateral incisors. The direction of dilaceration was an even percentage to each buccal and lingual side for most selected teeth, however, that of both canines and lateral incisors were directed in almost a buccal side. In the panoramic views, the root types of the buccolingually dilacerated teeth were irregular view on the root apex area, clear blunt on the root tip, stepping on root tip and normal types were almost always normal view. The more severity in dilareated degree, the more chances of observation in the panoramic views were clear blunt on the root tip and stepping on root tip. Conclusion : As observed in the shape of stepping on root tip or double lamina dura in the panoramic views, there can be much more probability to diagnose as a buccolingually dilacerated root.
This study was conducted to determine the soil chemical properties and microbial flora of platycodon and their effect on rhizome rot incidence. Sampling sites were Keochang 4, Kimhae 7, Haman 6, Chinju 6 and Koseong 3 fields in Kyongnam province and Hongcheong 6 fields in Kangwon province. The root disease incidence rate was in the order of Haman 56.8%, Hongcheon 52.5%, Kimhae 36.7%, Koechang 35.3%, Chinju 32.3%, Koseong 30.0%. The yield at the Chinju 36.17 Mg/ha was higher than that of Koseong 25.00 Mg/ha, Kimhae 13.57 Mg/ha, Koechang 11.75 Mg/ha, Haman 9.50 Mg/ha, Hongcheon 5.24 Mg/ha. The soil K, $NH_4-N$ content and EC value of injury root were higher than those of normal root. The root CaO content was positively correlated with yield $Y=20505X-367.9(R^2=0.129^{\ast})$. The Fe and Zn content of normal root were higher than those of injury root, while the T-N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ content of normal root were lower than those of injury root. The population of bacteria, actinomycetes and bacteria/fungi ratio increased in soil of normal root, but that of fungi decreased.
This study was performed to examine the accumulated concentrations (conc.) of cadmium (Cd) in the organs of Arabidopsis thaliana grown in the soil with different conc. of Cd. The official standard conc. of Cd of pollutant exhaust notified by the Korean ministry of environment (0.1 mg/L) and ten times higher (1 mg/L) and fifty times higher (5 mg/L) conc. and no Cd in the soil as control were used for this investigation. The results showed that accumulated conc. of Cd in the stems of plant grown in the soil with different conc. (0.1, 1 and 5 mg/L) were increased 9%, 24% and 286% respectively, compared with normal plant stem. The accumulated conc. of Cd in the leafs of plant gown in the soil with official standard conc. and conc. ten times higher and conc. fifty times higher were increased 3%, 22% and 453%, respectively, compared with normal plant leaf. The accumulated conc. of Cd in the root of plant grown in the soil with 0.1 and 1 mg/L conc. of Cd were increased 6%, 19%, respectively, compared with normal plant root. However, it was observed about 84% of increased accumulation of the Cd in the root of plant, when highest (5 mg/L) conc. was used. The accumulated conc. of Cd in the different organs of Arabidopsis thaliana were increased according to increase of Cd conc. in the soil. When official standard conc. and ten times higher conc. of Cd were used, the accumulated conc. of Cd increased average 6%, 21%, respectively, compared with normal plant organ, and the accumulated conc. of Cd between leaf, stem and root were not significant. However, the accumulated conc. of Cd in the plant organs gown in the conc. fifty times higher were increased about 285%, compared with normal plant. In addition, the accumulated conc. of Cd in different organs of Arabidopsis thaliana exhibited wide differences between organs, that is, stem was increased 118% than root, leaf was increased 256%, 64% than root and stem, respectively. These results show that accumulated conc. of Cd in Arabidopsis thaliana with highest (5 mg/L) conc. of Cd in soil, were much higher in the leaf than the stem or root in proportion to the conc. of Cd contaminated within the soil.
Weight (g/root) and bulk density (g/$cm^3$) of tap root in 15-root-grade of 4-year-old white ginseng were investigated by specific gravity and weight-volume method. Bulk density measured by specific gravity ranged from 0.8 to 1.2g/$cm^3$ with almost normal distribution in frequency (number 1 of roots). Bulk density measured by volume-weight method had significant correlation with root weight. The percentage of high bulk density root (above 1.0) showed significant positive correlation with mean root weight or mean bulk density of root weight, indicating that the growth conditions for large root provide the better compactnes of root tissue.
This study investigated ginsenosides and tissue characteristics of roots injured by physiological disorder, rusty and rough skin. After separation to cortex and stele parts of healthy, rusty (red) and rough skin roots, respectively, the contents of saponin and ginsenosides were analyzed. And also, the histological and cytological characteristics of cortex and stele parts were investigated. Crude saponin contents were little different among healthy, rusty (red) and rough skin root and ginsenesides as - Rgl, - Re and - Rbl were largely detected both in stele and cortex part. The ratio of PT/PD showed about 1:1 in three kinds of root. In histological study, destoryed cells in epidermis of rusty(red) root, and those in epidermis and exodermis of rough skin root were observed. The cells in cortex of rusty (red) and rough skin root have generally nucleus with unfixed shape, unequal cell wall, large number of vacuole and mitochondris, and unidentified dark substances compared to healthy root. But in cell of stele tissue, most of organellE seems to be normal except a small number of cells in rough skin root.
This work was carried out to elucidate effects of endogenous and exogenous IAA transport on adventitious root formation in Phaseolus vulgaris hypocotyl cuttings. For inverted or normal incubation in distilled water, the adventitious root is always formed at the morphological base but not at the morphological apex. For inverted incubation, in both distilled water and certain chemical solution, the root formation is retarded more at the first stage (0-24 hr) than at the second stage (24-48 hr). When p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid (PCIB) was applied to the cuttings at the first stage, theroot formation was inhibited more than at the second stage. Treatment of 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic aicd (TIBA)markedly inhibited the adventitious root formation in Phaseolus vulgaris hypocotyl cuttings. This inhibition influenced the root according to the applied stage and period. Therefore, the root formation is more related to the stage of root primordium formation than to the stage of root elongation from the primordium. Inhibition of auxin transport oraction by TIBA or PCIB could also be reversed when hypocotyl cuttings are incubated in exogenously applied IAA solution.
Chinese yam (Dioscorea Opposita Thanb) has been cultivated as medicinal crop and food. The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of tuber head origin and fertilizer application method on its agronomic characters of shoot and root tuber to get some imformation on its cultivation. The tuber head cultivated were cut from normal or branched root tuber. 37-28-32-2000 : N-P-K-Humus(Kg/10a) by dispersal but 30% N reduction of Con(RN) or strip application on the two-side of hill(SRN), were applied but N and K were given by the above method with the rate of 40% in March, 30% in June and 30% in July. Agronomic characteristics related to shoot and root tuber were measured and their relationship was analyzed. Tuber head origin had no effect on emergence rate, vine length, branch and node of vine, while emergence date of the tuber head from the normal root which showed the greatest emergence rate, vine length and node in Con treatment was earlier than the others. The tuber head from the normal root, furthermore, had greater length and diameter of root tuber harvested from the field and fresh weight per plant of per 10a compared to the tuber head from the branched root, whereas in both the normal and the branched tuber head RN had the worst result in the characters related to tuber yield except tuber diameter. The tuber head from the normal root produced heavier root tuber than that from the branched tuber and SRN had the best economic yield among the application methods, which resulted from production of less branched root tubers and their rate. In both the normal and the branched tuber head, moreover, yield per plant and economic yield were positively correlated to tuber length but negatively done to number. of branch of vine.
