  • This paper deals with the problem of plate separation and anchorage at the ends of steel plates strengthened by EBSP. Test results show that the reinforced concrete beams strengthened by EBSP occurs the premature failure without the beams achieving their full flexural strength at the end of plates. The premature failure is the cause of stress concentrations in the adhesive layer of plate, reinforced concrete incase of lack of plate length. Then a simple, approximate procedure for predicting the shear and normal stress concentrations is investigated by Robert's the ory based on partial interaction theory. The theoretical results are compared, and show close agreement with test results. A method is derived for determining the plate length that prevents the premature anchorage zone failure

  • Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.

  • Three-dimensional vortex structures in the corner region of translating normal plates are visualized experimentally with defocusing digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex formation processes for three plates with corner angle $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $120^{\circ}$ are compared in order to study the effect of corner shape on vortex formation. In all cases, the self-induction of the starting vortex and its interaction with the potential flow induced by the moving plate cause the vortex to change its form dynamically after the plate starts to translate. While the vortex near a corner follows the plate in the low corner angle of $60^{\circ}$, the vortex separates early from the plate and its forward motion becomes slow in the high corner angle of $120^{\circ}$. It is also found that the starting vortex can transport inward at the corner, which depends on the corner angle.

  • Temporary reconstruction of the mandibular continuity defect resulting from the ablative tumor surgery with a reconstruction plate can be used for the preservation of normal facial contour and oral function and for periodic follow up of recurrence. Reconstruction plates are adapted to the bone before the resection and provisionally fixated with some screws. Accurate contouring and adaptation are very important for the prevention of displacement of bony stumps and decubituous skin ulcer. However, if there is large expanding buccal tumor mass in mandible, it is very difficult or even impossible to contour the plate before resection. I, therefore, introduce the reconstruction plate application technique using a simple condylar repositioning miniplate after segmental mandibular resection.

  • This experimental study was carried out to examine the heat transfer characteristics of impinging air jet on a flat plate with a set of right angled triangle rods. Each right angled triangle rod in the array was positioned normal to the flow direction and parallel to the flat plate surface. The clearances from a right angled triangle rod to flat plate surface (C=1, 2 and 4 mm) and the distance from nozzle exit to flat plate (H=100 and 500 mm) were changed for the pitch between each right angled triangle rods (P=40 mm). As a result, heat transfer shows best performance at the clearance of C=1 mm, in case clearance changed, and the average heat transfer enhancement rate increased up to 47% compared to the result of a flat plate without a right angled triangle rod.

  • The present work is for an evaluation of resistance to corrosion in steel coated with cementitious repair material, so that 3 cases of steel plate(Normal, Welding, Welding & coating case) are subjected to ICM(Impressed Current Method) for acceleration of corrosion for 7days. Tested and estimated corrosion ratio through Faraday's Law are compared, and the related flexural strength are evaluated. In Normal and Welding cases, similar level of corrosion ratio(70%) is evaluated, however only 17% level of corrosion ratio is evaluated in the Welding & coating case, which indicates that cementitious repair material is effective to anti-corrosion due to a block of chloride penetration. The flexural test results are consistent with those in accelerated corrosion test, which shows a significant flexural strength in Welding & coating case by 3.4times greater than the others. The cementitious material repair coating is evaluated to be effective to anti-corrosion in welding of steel plate.

  • A finite strip formulation was developed for buckling and free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates based on different shear deformation plate theories. The different shear deformation theories such as Zigzag higher order, Refined Plate Theory (RPT) and other higher order plate theories by variation of transverse shear strains through plate thickness in the parabolic form, sine and exponential were adopted here. The two loaded opposite edges of the plate were assumed to be simply supported and remaining edges were assumed to have arbitrary boundary conditions. The polynomial shape functions are applied to assess the in-plane and out-of-plane deflection and rotation of the normal cross-section of plates in the transverse direction. The finite strip procedure based on the virtual work principle was applied to derive the stiffness, geometric and mass matrices. Numerical results were obtained based on various shear deformation plate theories to verify the proposed formulation. The effects of length to thickness ratios, modulus ratios, boundary conditions, the number of layers and fiber orientation of cross-ply and angle-ply laminates were determined. The additional results on the same effects in the interaction of biaxial in-plane loadings on the critical buckling load were determined as well.

  • When a gas expands through a convergent nozzle in which the ratio of the ambient to the stagnation pressures is higher than that of the critical one, the issuing jet from the nozzle is underexpanded. If a flat plate is placed normal to the jet at a certain distance from the nozzle, a detached shock wave is formed at a region between the nozzle exit and the plate. In general, supersonic moist air jet technologies with nonequilibrium condensation are very often applied to industrial manufacturing processes. In spite of the importance in major characteristics of the supersonic moist air jets impinging to a solid body, its qualitative characteristics can not even know. In the present study, the effect of the nonequilibrium condensation on the underexpanded moist air jet impinging on a vertical flat plate is investigated experimentally. Flow visualization and impact pressure measurement are performed for various relative humidities and flat plate positions. The obtained results show the plate shock and Mach disk are dependent on the nozzle pressure ratio and the relative humidity, but for a given nozzle pressure ratio, the diameters of the plate shock and Mach disk depend on the stagnation relative humidity. The impact pressure deviation from the flow of without condensation is large, as the relative stagnation humidity increases.

  • The design and fabrication of a metallic bipolar plate-gasket assembly for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs) is defined. This bipolar plate-gasket assembly was prepared by inserting a previously prepared bipolar plate in the specially designed gasket mold. For this aim, a proprietary fluoro-silicone based rubber was injected directly into the bipolar plate borders. Gaskets obtained like this showed the chemically / physically stable and the good sealibilty in typically operating PEM fuel cell conditions. And also, this bipolar plate-gasket assembly shows lots of advantages with respect to traditional PEMFCs stack assembling systems: useful application to automative stacking due to easy handling, reduced fabrication time, possibility of quality control and failed elements substitution. This bipolar plate-gasket assembly was evaluated in the short fuel cell stack and met the leakage requirement for normal operation both in short-term and in long-term operation. Especially, it was confirmed that this gasket could be applied successfully even in the high pressure FEM fuel cell systems(over 2.0 bar in absolute pressure).

  • In this paper, the sound radiation from a clamped circular plate with a viscoelastic layer excited by impact force is studied both analytically and experimentally. The composite plate vibrations are obtained by using the normal mode analysis and the eigenvalues are obtained by a Mindlin plate theory including the rotary inertia and shear deformation, The contact force developed between the ball and the plate with attached layers is obtained by Hertz contact theory. The radiated sound pressure is calculated by the Rayleigh integral. Prediction of the waveforms of sound radiating from the plate with attached layers and a method for reducing noise generation from the plate by impact force are also shown in this paper.
