  • Background: Aconitum sinomontanum Nakai (ASN) has been reported to have analgesic effects. In this study an animal model of pharmacopuncture using ASN (100-500 mg/kg) was examined. Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (n = 40) were randomly assigned to ASN-Low (1 mg/mL, 1.8 mL, ASN-L), ASN-Intermediate (5 mg/mL, 1.8 mL, ASN-M), ASN-High (10 mg/mL, 1.8 mL, ASN-H), negative control (0.2 mL normal saline), and positive control (0.2 mL 0.5% lidocaine) groups. All experiments were administered to the rats' left hind leg. The analgesic response was assessed by monitoring the physical (hot plate, and von Frey test) and chemical (formalin) responses to pain. Results: All ASN pharmacopuncture groups demonstrated significant differences in pain response to the hot plate test, von Frey test, and formalin test, compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The response of the ASN-M group and ASN-H groups to the hot plate, the formalin, and the von Frey tests were significantly different, compared to the lidocaine group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: ASN pharmacopuncture had a significant analgesic effect on SD rats in response to physical and chemical models of pain.

  • In this work, quasi three-dimensional (quasi-3D) shear deformation theory is presented for bending and dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) plates. The effect of varying material properties and volume fraction of the constituent on dynamic and bending behavior of the FG plate is discussed. The benefit of this model over other contributions is that a number of variables is diminished. The developed model considers nonlinear displacements through the thickness and ensures the free boundary conditions at top and bottom faces of the plate without using any shear correction factors. The basic equations that account for the effects of transverse and normal shear stresses are derived from Hamilton's principle. The analytical solutions are determined via the Navier procedure. The accuracy of the proposed formulation is proved by comparisons with the different 2D, 3D and quasi-3D solutions found in the literature.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of adding fibers to concrete and the distribution rate of the porosity on the interfacial stresses of the beams strengthened with various types of functionally graded porous (FGP) plate. Toward this goal, the beams strengthened with FGP plate were considered and subjected to uniform loading. Three types of beams are considered namely RC beam, RC beam reinforced with metal fibers (RCFM) and RC beam reinforced with Alfa fibers (RCFA). From an analytical development, shear and normal interfacial stresses along the length of the FGP plates were obtained. The accuracy and validity of the proposed theoretical formula are confirmed by the others theoretical results. The results showed clearly that adding fibers to concrete and the distribution rate of the porosity have significant influence on the interfacial stresses of the beams strengthened with FGP plates. Finally, parametric studies are carried out to demonstrate the effect of the mechanical properties and thickness variations of FGP plate, concrete and adhesive on interface debonding, we can conclude that, This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behavior of the interface and design of the FRP-RC hybrid structures.

  • The flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by external bonding of composite materials has proved to be an efficient and practical technique. This paper presents a study on the flexural performance of reinforced concrete continuous beams with three spans (one span and two cantilevered) strengthened by bonding carbon fiber fabric (CFRP). The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened continuous beam, i.e., the continuous concrete beam, the FRP plate and the adhesive layer. The adherend shear deformations have been included in the present theoretical analyses by assuming a linear shear stress through the thickness of the adherends. Remarkable effect of shear deformations of adherends has been noted in the results. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions that shows good agreement, and It shows the effectiveness of CFRP strips in enhancing shear capacity of continuous beam. It is shown that both the normal and shear stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam.

  • A code is developed using the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method and it is applied to simulate flows around a three-dimensional deforming body. A new criterion is suggested to distribute the immersed boundary nodes based on edges crossing a body boundary. Velocities are reconstructed at the immersed boundary nodes using the interpolation along a local normal line to the boundary. Reconstruction of the pressure at the immersed boundary node is avoided using the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid method. The developed code is validated through comparisons with other experimental and numerical results for the velocity profiles around a circular cylinder under the forced in-line oscillation and the pressure coefficient distribution on a sphere. The code is applied to simulate the flow fields around a plate whose tail is periodically flapping under a translation. The effects of the velocity and acceleration due to the deformation on the periodic shedding of pairs of tip vortices are investigated.

  • Prediction of damage caused by low-velocity impact in laminated composite plate is an important problem faced by designers using composites. Not only the inplane stresses but also the interlaminar normal and shear stresses playa role in estimating the damage caused. The work reported here is an effort in getting better predictions of damage in composite plate using DNS approach. In the DNS model, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. Through comparison with the homogenized model. In the view of microscopic mechanics with DNS model, interlaminar stress behaviors in the inside of composite materials is investigated and compared with the results of the homogenized model which has been used in the conventional approach of impact analysis.

  • In this paper, ultimate compressive strength of TMCP 50HT steel plates (yield stress .sigma.$_{o}$=36kg/mm$^{2}$) with HAZ softening is studied. Finite element method formulated by the author is applied to analyze the elasto-plastic large deflection behaviour of the plates. The influence of HAZ softening breadth, welding direction and slenderness ratio on the ultimate compressive strength is investigated. The results obtained are summarized as 1) With the increasing of the HAZ softening breadth, early plasticity on the plates is formed and then the ultimate compressive strength is decreased, in which about 8% of the ultimate strength for the plate with h/t=4(h: HAZ softening breadth, t: plate thickness) was reduced comparing with no HAZ softening. 2) The large decrease of the ultimate strength for the case that the welding direction is normal to the loading direction is occurred than the case that the welding direction is parallel to the loading direction. 3) The influence of HAZ softening on the ultimate compressive strength is serious for thick plates, while it may be negligible for thin plates.s.

  • In this study, we propose an optimal design and new fabrication method for a slim tactile sensor. Slim tactile sensor can detect 3-axial forces and has suitable flexibility for intelligent robot fingers. To amplify the contact signal, a unique table-shaped structure was attempted. A new layer-by-layer fabrication process for polymer micromachining that can make a 3D structure by using a sacrificial layer was proposed. A table-shaped epoxy sensing plate with four legs was built on top of a flexible polymer substrate. The plate can convert an applied force to a concentrated stress. Normal and shear forces can be detected by combining responses from metal strain gauges embedded in the polymer substrate. The optimal positions of the strain gauges are determined using the strain distribution obtained from finite element analysis.

  • We developed a new configuration of polarized light out-coupling lightguide plate (LGP) in the LCD backlight. By collimating the light into the LGP, one linear polarization component experienced total internal reflection at the planar interface of LGP and anisotropic layer, whereas the orthogonal polarization was out-coupled in the normal direction through a birefringent layer and subsequent isotropic microstructures.

  • In this paper, a refined higher-order shear deformation theory including the stretching effect is developed for the analysis of bending analysis of the simply supported functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates resting on elastic foundation. This theory has only five unknowns, which is even less than the other shear and normal deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, without the shear correction factor. The present one has a new displacement field which introduces undetermined integral variables. Equations of motion are obtained by utilizing the Hamilton's principles and solved via Navier's procedure. The convergence and the validation of the proposed theoretical numerical model are performed to demonstrate the efficacy of the model.
